Help with first time/basic PC $500-$700

2023.06.01 00:52 f1shys Help with first time/basic PC $500-$700

Hello everyone! First of all thanks so much for taking the time to help out, it's much appreciated, especially because I frankly don't know where to begin or what most of the words on this page mean.
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Mostly gaming and possibly also digital art- I use clip studio paint. Games are either indie or older- primarily hoping to use it for Hollow Knight and mods plus Silksong (god willing), Rainworld, and old games like KOTOR. I don't need anything to run high budget/big box games as they don't really appeal to me
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
Ideally under $700, less would be better as long as it doesn't compromise quality a lot
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Hopefully next weekend!
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
I don't have anything right now, but could probably get a cheap used monitokeyboard if my budget doesn't allow for new ones. Mostly concerned with the PC itself
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
The states! It looks like there's a Microcenter about ten minutes from me
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Unsure if I'll be reusing anything- don't have anything yet
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I don't know what that means, so probably not
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Nope! If possible I'd prefer a smaller setup that's not too difficult to build, since I live in a small apartment and I've never done this before
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
I just have wifi if that works!
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Nope! Ideally it'd be small and not too flashy
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I'm not really sure how this words, sorry. I suppose I will need to buy a copy?
Extra info or particulars:
Nothing really! If it could be something easy-ish to build that would be amazing since I'm very new to this. I was going to just buy a pre built one but my friend told me it's much cheaper in my price range/for my needs to DIY. Thanks a million

2023.06.01 00:20 WearyNefariousness71 Extremely unimpressive ANC

I'm an experience ANC user who has tried some good and some not so good ANC setups:
Bose QC35 II - really, really good Apple Airpods Pro (gen 1) - also really good OnePlus Buds Pro (gen 1) - not to bad either, especially for the low price but worse than the other two Jabra Evolve2 65 - negligible effect, almost not noticeable, I would even dare call it ANC, if I were Jabra
I've just received the Pixel Buds Pro which have more than decent reviews from top notch testers like Marques Brownlee yet their ANC feel very unimpressive. I've tested it in a loud spa area with lots of water noises and chatter, in a loud back yard with fitness studio noises and on the street with a bunch of traffic. Compared to the ANC from the Bose QC35 II, the Airpods Pro and even the OnePlus Buds Pro they fall of quite significantly. The difference between transparency mode, which also isn't that great tbh, ANC off and ANC on, the quality is much less than I anticipated.
Have others made similar experiences?
PS: Sound quality is pretty damn good for the price point. Rich/detailed sound and on par with the QC35 II, in my perception.

I just bought 2001: A Space Odyssey on 4k, I'm waiting for it to be shipped. Does anyone know the quality of the transfer of this movie on 4k? Studios have a very bad habit of screwing up transfers especially to a newish format.

2023.05.31 23:47 bassetbullhuaha Sent over here from Audiophile, advice on new system needed!

Hi Everyone,
I found this sub and wanted to ask some questions to the experts. In college I was previously semi involved in the audio world, I worked for the audio department at the school of music mastering the recital recordings on pro-tools and setting up recording sessions for live and studio events, and tuning everything to Aja best I could. I am completely removed from the world these days. I have a degree in music theory with the focus being jazz so want to be able to listen to the vinyl I own in the best possible fashion, so as someone with zero equipment, to set up a quality turn table, preamp/amp, receiver, speakers and anything you suggest...what do I buy? I understand you can go wild with the 5 figure speakers, but I am talking for a normal home set up with a conservative budget of between $1000 and $1500 if possible.

I can use my phone default mic, and I can use my wireless headphones. Both of these produce shitty quality with static and not much range. I really need an alternative to get closer to studio level quality. I have software to combine it w a beat and to ad adlibs.I really don’t want to spend much more money but i will if necessary

2023.05.31 23:14 Nevsx The history of red nationalist China. Part one (1944-1955)

The history of red nationalist China. Part one (1944-1955)

Background:

Following the failure of the First Northern Expedition, many had written off the Kuomintang as a political force. However, through what some call destiny and others call luck, it ended up the victor of China’s internal and external conflicts during the turbulent 1930’s and 40’s. China would only know peace 6 months after Japanese troops were driven off Korea, as the Japanese Empire agreed to withdraw from China, securing the state’s independence.

“Scatter the old world, build a new world”: 1950’s propaganda poster

Political organization:

After the guns fell silent, it was time to determine the way the newly created Republic of China would be governed. Chairwoman of the KMT Song Qingling preferred to end political tutelage sooner rather than later, as did her allies in the Provisional Action Committee. To that end, parties which were seen as favorable to the revolution were legalized. These included the League of Chinese Syndicalists, the China Democratic League, the Public Interest Party, the Rural Reconstruction Party, and the China National Democratic Construction association. These parties were mostly irrelevant at this point, and few doubted that the KMT would win the general elections of 1944 by a landslide. The KMT went on to do just that, winning 61% of the vote, more than enough for a majority in the 758-seat Legislative Yuan. The League of Chinese Syndicalists, The China Democratic League and the Public Interest Party got around 10% of the vote each, and the remaining parties obtained the remaining share of the vote.

Seat distribution of the first Legislative Yuan
The KMT had obtained a clear democratic mandate, but it would not be easy to keep the party together, as the party had several factions that competed for power. In 1944, the biggest faction was the Provisional Action Committee (PAC), led by Song Qingling and Deng Yanda. It was initially made up by members who stayed in the mountains of Fujian during the darkest days of the KMT. Ideologically, it believed in a form of populism which harnessed the participation of the masses. Due to its insurgent past, it had significant influence in the ROC army, and its support base was located mostly in the south of the country, as well as in minority regions. The second strongest faction was the Reorganized Comrades Association (RCA), led by Chen Gongbo after the unexpected death of Wang Jingwei shortly before the general elections. While Wang was not officially the faction leader, the top members of the faction were all his close collaborators who fled to Paris following the failure of the First Northern Expedition. Unlike the PAC, the RCA is explicitly Marxist and less open to liberal democracy. Most of its support was in the north, where more unequal land distribution made the rhetoric of Marxist class struggle more enticing to the peasantry. The smallest faction was the Reconstruction Faction (RF) led by Sun Fo. Its membership was made up if a combination of overseas Chinese who backed the Kuomintang financially, and former members of the Right-KMT who were politically rehabilitated. These two groups were united in their opposition to socialism. And behind them all lurked the China Reconstruction Society, a group of radicalized Totalist officers who deeply distrusted the transition to constitutional rule and sought to establish an ultranationalist and militarist state. The first cabinet formed by Song had representatives of all factions to keep the party together.
Ministry of the Interior: Deng Yanda (PAC)
Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Sun Fo (RF)
Ministry of Defense: Chen Mingshu (PAC)
Ministry of Finance: Zhang Renjie (RF)
Ministry of Education: Zhou Enlai (RCA)
Ministry of Justice: Mei Ju-Ao (PAC)
Ministry of International Trade and Industry: Chen Yun (RCA)
Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications: Chiang Ching-Kuo (PAC)
Ministry of Women: Deng Yinchao (RCA)

The Land Question:

One of the major policies of the Kuomintang was land reform. It assured them the support of the peasantry, which almost certainly won them the civil war. Before unification, 4% of China’s population owned 50% of the land, which made many peasants support the KMT in hopes of obtaining the title to the land they worked but did not own. However, “land reform” is a very generic term, which forced the ROC policymakers of the early postwar era to define what a land reform actually entailed. The original plan, already put into practice before the end of the war, capped rents at 37,5% of yields. However, the RCA and many in the PAC realized that was not enough. To that end, public land was sold to tenants and party work teams ventured to the countryside and divided the population between poor farmers, middle farmers, rich farmers and landlords. Some of these landlords lost all their land, often violently, while smaller landlords less hated by the peasants were allowed to keep some of their properties. While the broader KMT organization did not endorse violence, many local officials turned a blind eye or even encouraged violence against landlords and even rich farmers, especially in the north of the country.

Agricultural mechanization following land reform
The land reform campaigns resulted in the massive redistribution of millions of hectares of land from landlords to peasants, at the cost of thousands of deaths, mostly landlords. An exiled American syndicalist wrote: “middling peasants, who now accounted for 90 percent of the village population, owned 90,8 percent of the land, as close to perfect equality as one could possibly hope for”. The economic results of the reforms are generally evaluated as positive. It increased the amount of cultivated land and the quality of life in the countryside improved, along with incomes and productivity. Between 1944 and 1952, sharecropping ceased being the base of Chinese agriculture, replaced by a society of landowner-farmers.

Socialism through national capitalism:

The Kuomintang found themselves with the task of rebuilding an economy destroyed by decades (some would say centuries) of war and mismanagement. Beyond establishing the basic building blocks of any decent economy, such as a stable currency, solid macroeconomic variables and mechanisms for internal trade and communications, the KMT leadership had to agree on the direction in which to take the Chinese economy. The economic objectives of the Left-KMT can best be described as contradictory. Its ultimate objective was socialism, but it aimed to do so through developing capitalism. Which begged the question that no KMT higher up wanted to answer: When and how will the country transform from “national capitalism” to socialism? The ultimate goal of socialism became even more nebulous considering the defeat of the Internationale in the Second Weltkrieg, which threw the international socialist movement into disarray. An unnamed KMT member in the Ministry of International Trade and Industry is reported to have said: “We no longer know what socialism is, or how to get there, and yet it remains the goal.” The task of developing a new economic model that somehow synthetized socialism and capitalism fell to a group of bureaucrats and economists, either educated in France or self-taught, in the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), which grew consistently in power and overshadowed the Ministry of Finance when it came to developing economic policy. The model they developed has been called “dirigisme”, “developmentalist capitalism”, “Nanjing model” among others, but the most often used name is the “bird cage model”, coined by the first MITI minister, Chen Yun. According to him, the bird represented the free market, while the cage represented the plans made by the state. The cage should be big enough as not to choke the bird, but small enough so it does not fly away.

Hong Kong, 1950’s
During the early postwar era, large sectors of the economy were transferred to state enterprises, peaking at 50% of the economy in 1960, while private businesses were still allowed to exist. Many new state owned enterprises (SOE’s) were created, intended to be “national champions”. These enterprises provided extensive benefits for their employees, in so-called “iron rice bowl” jobs. The state aimed to guarantee full employment. This high level of state ownership allowed the state to prioritize and protect what it saw as critical sectors of the economy, which in this period was mostly heavy industry. These industries were usually shielded from competition by protectionist policies. Following the victory against Japan, it was understood that the country needed to supply itself, as that victory was not total. The IJN still ruled the waves, and the IJA was placed all over China’s southern border with Japan’s Indochinese puppets. Depending on imports would be a death sentence when access could be cut off in case of a Japanese blockade. Despite the impressive economic results of this model, significant issues sprung up. Lack of expertise led to inefficiency, causing the state to bring in experts from Germany and the USA to transmit knowledge on modern industrial practices. Foreign investment was eventually allowed in “special economic zones”. Conditions were still restrictive, as the law required partnering with a Chinese firm to operate. Regardless, China’s low labor costs, immense population and near total labor peace made it worth the hassle for investors. While initially only Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai and Guangzhou were “special economic zones”, gradually more cities were designated as such and eventually the policies applied in these zones were extended to the whole country as it slowly moved away from protectionism.

The end of Song’s tenure:

During these years of radical transformation, President Song continued to rule, achieving landslide electoral victories every four years, keeping the KMT’s various factions united throughout. However, during the post war years, the PAC’s power steadily declined while the RCA’s steadily increased. This was mostly because of two reasons. The RCA was the faction of the civilian bureaucracy, while the PAC was the faction of the military. As the country was at peace externally and internally and the likelihood of a new Japanese invasion decreased, the relevance of the civilians surpassed that of the military. Furthermore, the RCA could credibly claim credit for the success of land reform and industrial policy. It had successfully pressured the government for total land redistribution and the policy masterminds in the MITI all belonged to the RCA. When the RCA began to plot to throw out Song, she knew her tenure was over. Rather than risking a vote of no confidence that would throw the country into instability, she resigned. The dominant RCA then put Zhou Enlai in power, and removed their only credible intra-party threat to their power, Deng Yanda, from official posts. Many politicians, such as Chiang Ching-kuo, defected from the PAC to the RCA. With the PAC neutralized, the RF too irrelevant to matter, the Zhongteju placated, and the opposition parties with no mass appeal, RCA politicians would go on to dominate Chinese politics in the near future. However, the lack of an internal enemy would eventually doom the RCA itself.

2023.05.31 22:27 TutterEaston Which Episode 1 is the Best? - A Living World Retrospective

The Living World format has come to an end for the foreseeable future with the studio's pursuit of semi-annual expansions and quarterly releases. I've been around since the launch of Guild Wars 2 and some of my fondest memories are from logging in on Living World release days. Today I'd like to do a retrospective on the first episodes of each season to see how they compare and hold up to each other. I'll be ranking the episodes from lowest to highest and considering the totality of that release's content. I have replayed all of these episodes this week in order to make sure my perception on each of them is refreshed.

Without further ado, let's begin!
#5: Flame and Frost (Season 1)
The relaunch of Season 1 was a welcome and necessary addition. It helps to bridge the gap that used to make entering Season 2 after the Personal Story jarring. However, Season 1 is a bit jarring in and of itself as the story (taking place after Zhaitan's death) does not transition well from the core game. This first episode is non-offensive, serving as an introduction to Rox and Braham, but it offers no new map and the only non-story content it adds are Molten Alliance events in Core Tyria that were previously lost to history. Still, the relaunch saw the release of the Aetherblade Hideout CM, which helps to add much needed group content to pad out this otherwise narrow episode.
#4: Gates of Maguuma (Season 2):
While Flame and Frost struggles to form a bridge between the Personal Story and the Commander's next adventures, Gates of Maguuma gives you a clear sense of direction from the start: what is the truth behind the fall of the Zephyrites? Where is the Master of Peace going? We also start to learn more about Scarlet's past, which helps round out the villain we learn little about before defeating her in Season 1. This also was before the Commander had received open world voice acting as a content standard in HoT, so the player's role feels a bit more passive than in future episodes. This release came in a much different release cycle than future seasons, with the next episode premiering exactly two weeks later. As a result, the content is a bit lighter than most other releases, featuring only the Prospect Valley segment of Dry Top and some new armotrinkets.
#3: Out of the Shadows (Season 3):
Out of the Shadows had a lot of heavy lifting to do. The game was being heavily criticized for the lack of living world content before and after the launch of Heart of Thorns. HoT itself was criticized for having a rather narrow story and lacking an epilogue. Luckily, Out of the Shadows begins with a funeral for Eir—to give that missing closure to the events of HoT—and helps slowly introduce us to the coming White Mantle threat that comes to a head in Season 3. Bloodstone Fen is a vertically engaging map that creates a number of unbound magic skills for player use while gliding, and the episode's mastery, Counter Magic, was one of the first instances of Open World players being encouraged to use the Special Action key. The Chaos Isles fractal and revamps to the Swamp Fractal, Snowblind Fractal, and Infusion systems revitalized the struggling Fractals and drew in formerly disgruntled players. While the map isn't as large as modern ones and doesn't contain a large meta comparable to HoT or future LW seasons, it stands as one of the most unique maps in the game to this day.
#2: Prologue: Bound by Blood (The Icebrood Saga):
To date, I believe that Bound by Blood is the most successful story pivot that GW2 has ever achieved. Season 4 ends with Kralkatorrik's defeat and Aurene's ascension and without any hint of a future threat. This first episode would have the task of introducing our next villain(s) and following up on the incredibly high quality standard set by Season 4. Tensions are established over the rise of Aurene as an Elder Dragon and Kralk's defeat—the Charr's closest Elder Dragon threat— leads Bangar and his Blood Legion to set their sights on a new war. Of all the first episodes of Living World, the story presented here is my favorite and it is an absolute joy to play from start to finish. The new characters are interesting and engage with Tyria's history in a way I wish was more common for the game. Where this release falls short of first place is in its other content. Grothmar Valley is a lovely map and the 4 mini-metas keep the area relaxed but with activities to do for those sticking around. It strikes a good balance but does not introduce a mastery or any notable features, a bit disappointing after Season 4 concludes with the Skyscale and its associated masteries. The Shiverpeaks Pass Strike Mission lacks challenge but is a good intro to 10-man content for players who have never experienced 10-man content before. Had this episode gone the extra mile and included a CM for the strike mission, a new feature, or both, it may have been able to better compete with first place....
#1: Daybreak (Season 4):
This is the golden "triple release," the only time, to date, that GW2 has released a raid wing, a fractal, and a Living World Release all at the same time. Daybreak also has a long story, complete with story-only locations for extra cinematic value, and its map, the Domain of Istan, contains two meta events and lots of beautiful scenery. The mastery basically just lets you pick up Volatile Magic, which is a bit boring. The Twilight Oasis fractal and the Hall of Chains raid are both high quality, heart-pumping experiences, though. Daybreak seems to have it all with the Astral/Stellar weapons, the Domain of Istan's content, the 5-man and 10-man instanced content, the Binding of Ipos, and tons of polish (Fahranur, lore book UI, Fractal polish, etc), this episode takes the cake as the best opening to a living world season. Kralkatorrik and Palawa Joko being the main villains of the season makes perfect sense given the state the story is left in after PoF. Though I do not find the story being told quite as engaging as Bound By Blood, there is no doubt the release makes up for it in sheer quantity of content.

What do you value in a Living World episode? Do you have a different "Episode 1" ranking? Let me know what your favorite "Episode 1" is and why!

2023.05.31 20:51 Danileogabrielli Seeking Advice on My Professional Profile and Considering International Opportunities

Hello fellow Redditors,
I'm writing this post to seek your opinions and advice on my professional profile.
Currently, I'm facing difficulties finding a quality job in Italy where my skills and experience are adequately rewarded. As a result, I'm contemplating the idea of moving to other countries such as Switzerland, Denmark, or perhaps Spain. I would greatly appreciate any insights or recommendations you may have.
To provide some background information, I am a young Italo-Argentine (holding dual Italian and Argentine citizenship) born in Argentina, with Spanish as my native language. Through my work requirements, I have self-taught English and acquired fluency in Italian during my time in Italy.
From a young age, I have harbored a keen interest and passion for electronics, telecommunications, and information technology.
In addition to my professional career, I enjoy outdoor activities like mountain biking, flying drones, and trekking with friends. I firmly believe that these pursuits help foster a creative, resilient, and energetic mindset, qualities I consider essential for teamwork and success in any company.
Throughout my professional journey, I have encountered various challenges that have provided me with extensive experience and continuous growth.
I had the privilege of being a founding partner in a work cooperative company, which allowed me to develop interpersonal skills by dealing with human resources-related situations and working closely with other professionals.
My work experience spans across different fields. As an electronics technician, I have undertaken a wide range of tasks, from electrical maintenance in homes to installing alarms, CCTV security cameras, gate automation, and garden irrigation systems.
I have also worked as a telecommunications technician, gaining experience in fiber optic fusion, point-to-point wireless links, and satellite connections for data transmission. Additionally, I possess knowledge in satellite television, IPTV headends, and I have operated my own business as a Wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP) using Ubiquiti AirMAX and Mimosa equipment.
Moreover, I have over 8 years of experience as an IT infrastructure specialist. I have developed skills in technologies such as virtualization using VMware ESXi, MikroTik router administration, Ubiquiti UniFi mesh networks, infrastructure monitoring with Zabbix, Zimbra mail servers, cPanel web hosting panels, Windows Server IIS, structured cabling, IP cameras, Linux servers, MySQL and MSSQL databases, as well as experience with enterprise hardware from HPE, Lenovo, and Dell in corporate environments and IT consulting.
During the last two years I lived in Argentina, I had the incredible opportunity to collaborate and be part of a multidisciplinary team in my hometown of Rosario, Santa Fe. We worked closely with architects, electricians, air conditioning technicians, audio professionals, software implementers, and hardware and professional sound equipment providers to set up two FM radio studios and a cutting-edge, 100% digital editing studio. During this time, I acquired knowledge in advanced technologies such as the Livewire+ AoIP protocol, xNodes, Radius consoles, VOLT audio processors, and OmniaMPX nodes for program transmission. I also learned about soundproofing and acoustic design, studio setup, and sound production. Additionally, I worked as a radio operator and coordinated groups for live sessions. Furthermore, I contributed to the implementation of live radio broadcasts with video over the internet and social media platforms. At the end of the project, management offered me the opportunity to work as a technical manager.
Recently, I have taken programming courses, which have provided me with knowledge in the C# language and some experience with MSSQL. While I don't have professional experience as a programmer, I'm willing to take on a trainee role and learn quickly.
Upon my arrival in Italy, I have worked in unrelated roles to my main expertise, such as a waiter in a Latin American restaurant in the city of Imola, as well as a kitchen porter in an agriturismo restaurant in San Lazzaro di Savena. I have even worked as an assistant collecting pears in a field in the comune of Imola. These experiences have allowed me to adapt quickly to new environments and work effectively as part of a team.
Given my background and current circumstances, I would greatly appreciate any advice, suggestions, or recommendations on how to enhance my professional profile, pursue opportunities abroad, or any insights on the job market in countries like Switzerland, Denmark, or Spain.
Thank you in advance for your time and valuable input. I look forward to your responses and engaging in a fruitful discussion.
Best regards, Daniel
