2023.03.22 17:17 checkerchickens Imposter Syndrome?
Right now I teach General/Vocal Music at a Pre-K to 8th grade school. There’s a position open for a K-12 school being the campus wide Choir director, and music director for the school musical productions. It’s a dream job for sure. I have a bachelor of music degree in Music ed and voice. Graduated in 2021.
They say they “require” a Master’s degree, 3 years of conducting experience, and to be a comfortable pianist. The salary is $56,000 at a private school. I only have a bachelor’s degree, I’ve only been teaching 2 years, all my conducting classes were virtual due to COVID and I’m a basic piano player at best. My college didn’t offer more than 2 semesters of basic piano note reading. Thank god I like music theory…
My mentor is telling me to go for it. I don’t feel capable of something this caliber, but should I try for it anyway? I would love to have this job someday, but I’m worried I’m just a shit musician/conductor.

2023.03.22 17:05 SeaAnthropomorphized Test advice. My college is recommending I take a math next but I don't want to pay for it.
I know I can take a CLEP test but I don't know which test to take. I can either do College Math or College Algebra and test out so I don't have to pay for those credits. What do you recommend? I haven't taken a math class in almost 20 years. I remember the quadratic equation, linear equations, slopes, and not much else.

2023.03.22 17:04 MonsterFromSpace University Has Stopped Paying Its Employees
I work for a small, private, not-for-profit university in Ohio. We are supposed to be paid every two weeks (26 paychecks a year). We are always paid by direct deposit every other Friday and the money is always in our accounts by the morning of payday. Our last payday was Friday, March 10 and on that day, nobody received their direct deposit. There was no word from university leadership all day. I emailed human resources and they did not respond. That is extremely out of the ordinary for them.
At 5:41 pm ET, the president of the university sent out the following email:
Dear Team [university],
Thank you for your hard work and dedication to our students and the well being of each other.
Payroll distribution began today and will continue through early next week.
The good news is that our university community worked together very hard to reach our Spring headcount goal, and we exceeded it! Unfortunately, the troubled economy has hit our student population hard causing them to take fewer classes and to delay tuition payments.
In light of that fact, the decision was made not to wait for remaining tuition to come in before distributing payroll. [University] was able to supplement the tuition revenues, which is a testament to [university]'s commitment and resilience to be able to do so. However, that process takes a little longer. Therefore, we anticipate everyone will be paid by early next week.
With appreciation for all that you do for [university]!
[President]
By the morning of Monday, March 13, most or all of the university's hourly employees had been paid. As of today, 12 days later,
none of the salaried employees have been paid. I don't know how many people that is between faculty and staff, but it's a lot. Easily dozens. On Thursday, March 16, the president's office sent another email:
Dear Team [university],
Thank you for your patience, as the university coalesces resources for payroll disbursement. We apologize for the delay that unfortunately has taken longer than anticipated but is close to being completed. As you may remember, [university] has undergone much greater challenges in the past, and met each one. We do so now.
Everyone will be paid, and here is why there has been a delay. The disbursement problems emanate from uncollected receivables owed to [university] from federal and state governments, as well as a significant percentage of unpaid tuition. Federal funding of over $3.2 million was to have been sent to [university] this Fall, and the university is still waiting, as are hundreds of other institutions and companies. Unfortunately, we cannot escalate the timing of when these federal government funds will arrive. There is also grant funding owed to [university] that should have been sent in January, and that [university] is just now partially receiving this week. That said, as a testament to [university]’s resiliency, the university has been successfully supplementing this significant amount, as we wait for government funds.
As [university] waits for external funding sources owed, daily operations and payroll become primarily dependent on tuition. However, this semester, a significant percentage of our students have not paid, nor made payment arrangements, further challenging the budget. Therefore, [university]’s collection policy is being revised. To augment internal funding, as is common practice in higher education when new funding is needed, we are securing external funds that will cover expenses sufficiently, while we wait. External funds, coupled with existing funds, will help close the gap from non-payment of tuition revenues. Although external funding was approved prior to payroll, we are still waiting for the funds to be deposited, which could be an impact of the current banking crisis. Funds are delayed but are forthcoming. Information expected tomorrow will give us a better potential timetable for processing funds and payroll disbursement. I will continue to update you.
Again, with deep appreciation for your patience, and belief in [university]’s resiliency,
[president's name]
President
The "external funds" that the president references above is a (presumably bank) loan that we have
not been approved for as far as I know, despite what it says in the email. This loan, according to the president, would cover payroll expenses through the fiscal year. That much appears to be true.
I have done what I can to press the president's office for information. We mostly get radio silence or lies. I'm working with other office heads to identify some of the more financially vulnerable employees to try to get them some emergency help if we are not paid this coming Friday, the 24th, our next payday. We all continue to come in or log on and do our jobs every day.
I don't know what to do next.
If we really are close to getting a loan approved, I'm afraid I could possibly tank that if I go to the media. Then no one gets paid. I would like to contact the proper authorities, but I don't know who that would be. The Ohio Department of Labor has places to file complaints for minimum wage workers denied pay or people denied overtime pay, but this isn't that.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

2023.03.22 17:04 yakofalltrades Hi Staples Associates, I was trying to send Feedback to corporate and saw there is literally no link to the feedback button, no url for it to redirect to at all. So I was curious, has anyone brought this up to y'all professionally? Do you think your higher-ups care?
2023.03.22 17:03 caffeineandnihilism Licensing board is requesting information on a marijuana possession charge that was expunged over a decade ago and I am unsure how I should respond
I'm a healthcare worker attempting to get incensed in Washington DC. Dealing with any level of the DC government, particularly regarding anything to do with a license, is a nightmare under the best of circumstances. 6 months following my initial application, I finally thought I was near the end of the process when my point of contact informed me that the licensing board had questions about a weed charge from 2011 and that I need to provide a statement as well as any documentation regarding the charge that I may have. The incident in question happened almost exactly 12 years ago when I was still in high school. I had just turned 18 but was hardly an adult, just a dumb kid doing dumb kid stuff and got caught with like 2 grams of weed on me. We ended up getting a lawyer, I did some community service and substance classes, and ultimately got it expunged.
I have worked multiple jobs that have required background checks, got into and completed my doctorate program that also required background checks and multiple drug screens, etc, and currently hold an active license in Virginia. This is the first time anyone has ever mentioned the drug charge. I didn't even think it COULD be mentioned, being expunged and all. I don't have any paperwork related to it and don't particularly want to reach out to my mom to see if she's hung on to any of it. What should my statement to the board be? Could they really keep me from getting my license based on this alone? Thanks in advance for any advice yall can give

2023.03.22 17:00 Scatb12 When is it worth it to switch studios?
Hi! I am debating between 2 options. I currently go to a very intimate studio that uses balanced body reformers and teaches a more classic method (but not strictly). There are different levels of classes, and I enjoy it BUT I pay $300/12 classes a month. A neighbor studio uses megaformers and is much less intimate, the instructors are not fixing posture as often, the flow isn’t as on point, it is a more modern/upbeat method - they mix in weights and strength movements and every class is open to beginners - so each class is like a mixed bag on challenge level.. BUT they charge $300/unlimited a month. Both studios have great reviews. I am a little bias because I prefer the traditional reformer, but I feel like making the switch might be worth it for the amount of classes. I live in a smaller city, so my options are limited especially for unlimited memberships. Anyone else have a similar experience?

2023.03.22 16:54 HawkingRadiation_ Honest thoughts on M2 MBP?
I have a 2016 13in touch bar MBP. Which has held out pretty well given all the problems (and class action lawsuits) that this model had.
That said, I do some reasonably insensitive computation (spatial statistics, modeling, mapping) and I am considering upgrading to a new M2 MBP. The old computer just isn't quite fast enough any more.
I would go for the studio or something, but I need to be able to travel with the computer. I am also considering using bootcamp to split the disk and run windows but that is not at all set in stone as I also have pretty good a PC for when I need it.
I am just hoping to get some honest opinions on people who use the new M2 MBPs every day.
I would be willing to hold out if the current M2s just simply are not worth the money.
For reference, my current specs are:
2.9GHz Dual Core i5
8gb Ram
Intel Iris 550 1536 MB
I would be upgrading to something like:
Apple M2 Pro with 12‑core CPU, 19‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine
16GB unified memory
1TB SSD storage
96W USB-C Power Adapter

I played with kubernetes for a couple of month, but now after reinstalling ContainerOS and trying to install kubernetes using my fork at

I use hyperkube image v1.6.0-beta.0_coreos.0.
the problem is that it seems that hyperkube doesn't try to initiate any manifests from /etc/kubernetes/manifests. I configured kubelet to run with rkt.

just in case.. these are the manifests in /etc/kubernetes/manifests that aren't being executed. rkt list --full doesn't show that any type of pod is starting besides the regular hyperkube.

2023.03.22 16:33 allybeeeee123 My driving school is scamming me
I’m taking a course and at the begging before paying I was promised 16 hours of driving lessons. It was divided to 4 days 4 hours each but every day I only drove for 3 hours which totals to 12 hours. We waited a lot for other students to arrive or teachers who were running late which they won’t add up at the end of the class,it always ends at the same exact time. And we already go to a another destination because it’s where the students practice which takes over half an hour(the teachers drive us).I was chatting with another student and she told me the same, she said she made her husband calls the school but they kind of avoided and denied it.
I want to say something but I’m not a confrontational person and I’m also afraid that if they treat me meanly afterwards.Because I feel like I need more lessons from them to feel more comfortable driving.(I would be paying extra for)

2023.03.22 16:24 RROD93 Dumb & Disciplined: You Do Not Need a MBA to be a Great Trader
"I haven't seen much correlation between good trading and intelligence. Some outstanding traders are quite intelligent, but a few are not. Many outstandingly intelligent people are horrible traders. Average intelligence is enough. Beyond that, emotional makeup is more important."
William Eckhardt
How smart do you really have to be in order to become a successful trader?
I mean, those God-like figures, the traders, are often portrayed as people who have cracked the code to decipher the overwhelming complexity we call life.
The traders! Those mighty figures who can forecast the impact of the droughts in south Missouri on the next week's price of the S&P 500. The traders! Those enlightened, glamorous and filthy rich brainiac … of course they can forecast the impacts of a butterfly farting in the middle of the pacific … haha, and profit out of their complex internal, black-box equations.
Or can they?
This preconception about traders drives me immediately to an episode narrated by Nassim Taleb in one of his
Incerto books, where he tells us that when he was a fresh, young trader, there was this guy, this legendary currency trader focused on the swiss franc pairs. His reputation preceded him. … and Nassim was hilariously struck by surprise when he found out, after meeting up with this legend, that this trader didn't even know where Switzerland was.
Or, another funny example was of another equally well reputed commodities trader, specialized in green lumber … who had been trading this commodity for his entire career thinking that 'green' lumber referred to a special kind of wood coloured green whereas it actually refers just to lumber with a high moisture content … I mean …
Well! Before you start mocking at these guys, think that these guys were probably living their best lives, in their lavish penthouses, summer yachts and whatnot. So despite their enhanced cultural and wisdom enlightenment, there must have been something they were doing well in order to generate all that success.
But before expressing my point. Allow me to raise it a little further … very quickly.
LTCM. Long Term Capital Management. 1998. Three Nobel Laureates at the wheel of this infamous hedge fund. Three Nobel Laureates. Three Nobel Laureates applying their nobel-prize-winning-holy-grail formula. Result? Disaster. No no, excuse me, I meant: absolute disaster. Like the Federal Reserve bailout kind of disaster. Yet these guys were geniuses.
The point I want to drive across is that, in trading, intelligence can only take you that far. Too much intelligence can even be detrimental.
Being dumb enough not to question some time tested adages like:
- "Let your winners run & cut your losers short."
- "The trend is your friend."
- "Don't try to catch a falling knife."
- "The market can remain irrational longer than you can stay solvent."
- "Don't fight the FED."
Will do wonders for your trading. Provided … and here's the crux, you ally your dumbness with a military-like discipline and emotional regulation.
Look at the Turtle Traders's example. Not calling them dumb or whatsoever. But here's the key to their success:
- Buy if the price closes at 20 days' high.
- Close long if the price closes below the 2 ATR trail.
- Add proper position sizing to this equation.
- Act on your buy & sell triggers with no hesitation, no doubt, whatsoever.
- Repeat autistically.
Disclaimer of course: it is your responsibility to build and test your craft. Just saying that successful trading recipes look a lot more like this simple napkin formula than Einstein-Rocket-Science material.
Oh! And here's another important caveat … there is a whole finance industry which benefits much more from having you thinking that trading has to be black box material. Only for high performing MBA and suits.
Ridiculous! Open your eyes.
The rules are easy, it's the emotional management that is hard.
Cheers,
Ruben

2023.03.22 16:15 TheGrandChonkus Price of English classes
I'm looking around for English classes for my GF and schools are charging 350-450 baht per hour, and that's a group class of up to 12 or more students. Are people really paying teachers $150 an hour to teach an English class? What am I missing? I can't believe people are making 300K a year to teach English in Thailand.
