2023.06.06 08:39 Subject_External_196 I left my parents and cut them off from my life - Finally Free

I got hired into a much, much better-paying job.
I left the house, rented my own place, and changed my number. I am planning to deposit a fixed amount into my Papa's bank account to cover his medical expenses and food, but that's it. He still has his pension.
They have to live within their means. Right now, I'm 35. No matter how much I earn, it's never enough because of my parent's never-ending credit card debt.
My mother believes I owe her everything I have now, my entire life. This was also her perception when she beat me up as a child. That it's her God-given right for giving birth to me.
My mother managed my Papa's entire salary. He was a director in a multinational firm. His salary would make you weep in tears if you are earning them now, and back then, everything was much cheaper. But lo and behold. We are living in a run-down house. We never bought a car, all of them were given to us (second-hand from my Dad's company). Wala silang investments. Walang savings. Walang insurance. We lived near destitution. Akala ko dati mahirap lang kami. I did not understand that we were supposed to be an upper-middle-class family until I was much older. Lahat ng kapatid ni Mama sa kanya naka-asa and she kept on giving them money because it makes her feel special and important. Classic narcissist.
My Dad retired with millions from his company. They wasted those within five years after retirement.
Now that I am old, she kept on harping about "utang na loob". Then what happened sa "utang na loob" ng mga relatives ng mother ko? Whatever they gave me was their responsibility. Pero they are not responsible for their relatives. Bakit ako may utang na loob at sila wala?
Even then, I paid my dues a hundred times over, until I was 35. Even then, kulang pa din.
So I left, and I'm not coming back. I plan to migrate eventually, far away from my parents and their relatives.
I am not sorry for being hard-hearted. Pero matuto kayo sa mga pagkakamali nyo. In the end, nasa huli ang pagsisisi.

Did I say to much?
Me & my ex broke up 7 months ago after being together for 9 years (mutual agreement). We have a 8 year old & 3 year old— that we agreed to coparent, he hasn’t taken them for a visit since the end of January & that was for their papa’s funeral. He did visit once for 3 hours on my daughter’s birthday. He constantly promises to take them on trips, buy them toys, call them & yet he can’t even give them the bare minimum…

2023.06.06 07:05 dontkillspiders Do I fit here?

Hi everyone,
I’m curious if there is room for someone like me here?
I was raised in evangelicalism by a single mother who came to the United States illegally.
I grew up believing that I needed to ask Jesus to live in my heart in order to not go to Hell.
I believed that God sent His Son to save me from my sin.
I believed if I didn’t ask God for forgiveness I would go to Hell.
When I was 27 I got divorced and my entire faith shook.
I began to question everything.
That was ten years ago.
For the last 3ish years I’ve been saying I’m either very Christian or I’m not Christian at all.
Recently I realized it’s changed.
I feel comfortable saying I’m very Christian.
But I’m pretty sure a lot of Christians won’t like talking to me.
I don’t believe in Hell, or the Devil, or that God created me to worship Him.
I don’t know how to describe what Christians believe about the Bible… it’s really confusing… it’s the Word of God… but we were told in John chapter 1 that Jesus is the Word of God.
I hear people I love and respect argue that the world is 6000 years old because they believe in the Bible.
I really love the Bible, I’ve studied it a lot through the years… honestly I don’t read it much these days. But I think we are forcing it to be something it was never meant to be. If we believe we are flawed, can we maybe understand that even our idea of perfection is flawed? Like we demand the Bible is something it never really strived to be.
I’m not trying to open a can of worms, but I’m curious if I can fit in here?

2023.06.06 06:59 Phoenixisyeet Action Films Based On Specific Scenarios and Characterizations

Scenario 1: When a girl is left for dead, the criminals are haunted by a vigilante for vengeance. (Revenge 2017/Arrow 2012/Man on Fiire/I Saw The Devil/Any Batman movie/You Were Never Really Here)
Scenario 2: High profile targets are being killed one by one. " Pin Board Takedown" Is there a proper name for this? Idk but I really love this trope. (Law abiding citizen/Collateral/Colombiana/The EqualizePunisher movies & show)
Scenario 3: After everyone else has stopped, an agent keeps pace running after a vigilante. (Condor movies & show/Prisoners/The Night Manager)
Character 1: For this type of character I prefer them ruthless, breaking arms or throwing them off a building. They should be extremely dedicated, where it always seems like they're around the corner and three steps ahead. They're intelligent, familiar with police tactics, and know how to plan out their mission. Portrayed as more mystery than man and/or infamous among those who know them. Highly trained, moments where they easily escape police custody in a blink of an eye or drop 5 bodies in 3 minutes.
Character 2: They're the leader who keeps a cool head, something that's needed in their job. Mostly likely former military background, bonus point for some war scars. Just as intelligent and capable as mc 1. Leans morally good but could be just a grey.
Prefer non-foreign and anything after 2010.

9/11 Attack

Introduction:
The events of September 11, 2001, forever changed the world and left an indelible mark on the collective consciousness of humanity. In the aftermath of this tragic day, filmmakers sought to capture the essence of the attacks, the ensuing chaos, and the human spirit's resilience in the face of adversity. This article provides an in-depth analysis and review of several movies that have tackled the sensitive subject of 9/11. From harrowing accounts to stories of hope and healing, these films offer unique perspectives on one of the darkest chapters in recent history.
"United 93" (2006):
Directed by Paul Greengrass, "United 93" recounts the true story of the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the terrorists. The film adopts a docudrama style, providing a gripping and realistic portrayal of the events onboard the flight. With a meticulous attention to detail and a focus on the human stories involved, "United 93" stands as a powerful testament to the bravery and unity displayed by ordinary individuals in extraordinary circumstances.
"World Trade Center" (2006):
Directed by Oliver Stone, "World Trade Center" takes a more personal approach to the 9/11 narrative. The film follows the true story of two Port Authority Police Department officers, John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), who were trapped in the rubble of the collapsed towers. Through their harrowing ordeal and the tireless efforts of rescue workers, the movie emphasizes the strength of the human spirit and the unwavering determination to save lives, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
"Reign Over Me" (2007):
Directed by Mike Binder, "Reign Over Me" explores the aftermath of 9/11 from a different perspective. The film focuses on the character of Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler), a man who lost his family in the attacks and has since withdrawn from society. Through his chance encounter with an old college roommate (Don Cheadle), the movie delves into themes of grief, loss, and the healing power of friendship. While not directly depicting the events of 9/11, "Reign Over Me" provides a poignant exploration of the emotional impact and long-term effects of the tragedy.
"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" (2011):
Based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" tells the story of a young boy named Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) who lost his father (Tom Hanks) in the attacks. Determined to find meaning in his loss, Oskar embarks on a journey through New York City, seeking answers and connection. The film captures the innocence and resilience of a child grappling with the complexities of grief while highlighting the power of human connection and the need for healing in the wake of tragedy.
"Man on Wire" (2008):
While not a traditional narrative film, "Man on Wire" deserves mention for its exploration of the World Trade Center's twin towers before their destruction. Directed by James Marsh, the documentary chronicles the extraordinary feat of Philippe Petit, a high-wire artist who illegally walked between the towers in 1974. By showcasing the towers' beauty and majesty, "Man on Wire" provides a bittersweet reflection on the buildings themselves, serving as a poignant tribute to their significance and the void left in their absence.
Through the power of cinema, these movies have attempted to honor the victims, survivors, and heroes of 9/11 while shedding light on the complex emotions and challenges that followed the tragic events. Each film explores different aspects of the tragedy, ranging from the raw and visceral to the emotional and introspective. By engaging with these stories, viewers are encouraged to reflect, remember, and find hope amid the darkness. While no film can fully capture the magnitude of the events, these cinematic works offer poignant narratives that contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding 9/11 and its lasting impact on society.
The good or bad side of the movies
The Good Side:
Emotional Impact:
"9/11" succeeds in creating an emotional connection with the audience, as it focuses on the experiences and struggles of a diverse group of characters. The film effectively captures the fear, desperation, and courage that individuals faced during the attacks. By humanizing the characters and highlighting their personal stories, the movie effectively conveys the magnitude of the tragedy and its impact on the lives of ordinary people.
Realism:
The film pays attention to detail in recreating the atmosphere and setting of the World Trade Center. From the accurate portrayal of the Twin Towers to the use of news footage from the time, "9/11" creates an immersive experience that transports viewers back to that fateful day. This commitment to realism enhances the film's authenticity and adds to its overall impact.
Talented Cast:
The movie features a talented ensemble cast, including Charlie Sheen, Gina Gershon, Luis Guzmán, and Whoopi Goldberg. The actors deliver sincere performances, effectively conveying the emotions and struggles of their respective characters. Their performances help create a sense of empathy and connection, drawing viewers into the narrative and enhancing the film's impact.
The Bad Side:
Simplistic Narrative:
One of the main criticisms of "9/11" is its reliance on a simplistic narrative structure. The focus on the characters' struggles within the elevator, while understandable given the confined setting, limits the film's exploration of the larger context and complexities of the events. The movie fails to provide a broader perspective on the impacts of 9/11, such as the political ramifications or the experiences of first responders and survivors outside the elevator.
Lack of Character Development:
Given the time constraints of the film's narrative, many of the characters in "9/11" feel underdeveloped. There is a missed opportunity to delve deeper into their backgrounds, motivations, and personal journeys. As a result, some of the characters may come across as one-dimensional, and the emotional connection between the audience and the characters may be hindered.
Inconsistent Pacing:
The film's pacing is uneven, with moments of intense action and suspense juxtaposed with slower, more contemplative scenes. This inconsistency in pacing can disrupt the flow of the narrative and impact the overall viewing experience. Tighter editing and a more cohesive pacing could have improved the film's overall impact and engagement.
"9/11" is a film that attempts to capture the emotional intensity and human stories associated with the tragic events of September 11, 2001. While the movie succeeds in creating an emotional impact and maintaining a sense of realism, it falls short in terms of its simplistic narrative structure, lack of character development, and inconsistent pacing. Despite its flaws, the film serves as a reminder of the resilience and courage displayed by individuals in the face of unimaginable adversity. Ultimately, viewers' appreciation of "9/11" will depend on their expectations, as well as their desire for a more nuanced exploration of the broader context and complex aftermath of the attacks.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, "9/11," directed by Martin Guigui, is a film that attempts to capture the emotional intensity and human stories associated with the tragic events of September 11, 2001. While the movie succeeds in creating an emotional impact and maintaining a sense of realism, it falls short in terms of its simplistic narrative structure, lack of character development, and inconsistent pacing.
The film's strength lies in its ability to evoke a strong emotional response from viewers. By focusing on a diverse group of characters trapped in an elevator within the World Trade Center, "9/11" effectively conveys the fear, desperation, and courage experienced by individuals during the attacks. The attention to detail in recreating the atmosphere and setting of the Twin Towers enhances the film's authenticity and adds to its overall impact. Additionally, the talented cast delivers sincere performances that help create a sense of empathy and connection.
However, "9/11" is limited by its simplistic narrative structure. The focus on the characters' struggles within the elevator restricts the exploration of the larger context and complexities of the events. The film lacks a broader perspective on the political ramifications, the experiences of first responders, and the stories of survivors outside the elevator. Furthermore, the characters themselves feel underdeveloped, with missed opportunities to delve deeper into their backgrounds and motivations.
The movie's inconsistent pacing is another drawback, with moments of intense action and suspense juxtaposed with slower, more contemplative scenes. This inconsistency disrupts the flow of the narrative and impacts the overall viewing experience. Tighter editing and a more cohesive pacing could have improved the film's impact and engagement.
Despite its flaws, "9/11" serves as a reminder of the resilience and courage displayed by individuals in the face of unimaginable adversity. While it may not provide a comprehensive exploration of the broader context and aftermath of the attacks, the film effectively captures the emotional impact and personal stories associated with that tragic day.
Ultimately, viewers' appreciation of "9/11" will depend on their expectations and their desire for a more nuanced portrayal of the events and their consequences. While it falls short in some areas, the film's ability to evoke strong emotions and its commitment to realism make it a worthwhile watch for those seeking a personal and emotional perspective on the events of September 11, 2001.

2023.06.06 06:39 ChaoticEnergy07 Obnoxious Neighbors

My neighbors are the neighborhood clowns. They do dumb shit ALL THE TIME. I honestly feel at this point, they go out of their way to inconvenience everyone. So aren’t I lucky that I live right next to them? For one, they are all over the neighborhood Facebook page for multiple things. One of the main reasons is because of their chickens. Please don’t get me wrong; chickens are cute. But I swear these chickens go on full-day escapades, and my neighbors could not care less. I see these chickens streets away when heading home from work. People are always asking, “Who’s chickens are these?” On Facebook and asking, “Why is my driveway covered in chicken shit?”. People were eventually able to pinpoint that the chickens lived on my street. But to this day, those chickens are still wandering around like an enigma.
My neighbors were also on there for their golf cart. FOR A WEEK, people were trying to find who crazy ass kid was driving recklessly in the neighborhood. I initially did not connect the dots since I was working long hours at the time and was under the impression people were talking about a teenager. But come to find out, my neighbor was letting their nine-year-old drive a golf cart without supervision. The situation led to multiple instances where the kid almost hit parked cars. Someone must have figured out the kid lived on my street because someone called the police. I only know this due to the police knocking on doors trying to pinpoint my neighbor's house. They got a warning and haven’t let the kid do that since.
I’ve also had personal grievances. But I honestly can overlook most things, probably due to being desensitized. BUT I will NEVER get over being woken up to my room wall vibrating at midnight on a Monday. Dude, I have to wake up at 5 pm every day for work. It’s also not fun waking up to what feels like an earthquake. So to my neighbor, I understand that you love Nickelback and Papa Roach, but for the love of all, that is holy. Please stop giving me a HEART-ATTACK.

2023.06.06 06:28 Sgabonna "You shall have no other gods before me" does not mean there aren't other gods, the fallen angels or the gods of Ancient myths are simply no longer with us.

In Exodus 20:3 it says,
"You shall have no other gods before me. "
This doesn't affirm that there are no other gods, but that no other gods should be worshiped before Him.
The context given as to why they shouldn't have any God before them is Exodus 20:2
" I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. "
The reason the God of the Jews gave as to why they should only worship Him in Exodus 20:4-6 was:
" You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in the heavens above, on the earth below, or in the waters beneath. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on their children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing loving devotion to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments. "
The God that sits above all, that is both the creator and created, the eternal God, would have no need to be Jealous, for He knows what will come, He is present in all of us, which makes me wonder why Jesus said this to the Jews who disputed His claim in John 8:44:
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies
He claimed that they could not be doing the work of the one true God, as they desired to 'kill him' in John 8:39-41:
“Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would[c] do what Abraham did. As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. You are doing the works of your own father.”
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
Jesus went on to explain in John 8:42 that:
“If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me.
The Jews tried to accuse Jesus of being a Samaritan and Demon-possessed in John 8:48-53, however they misunderstood what Jesus was saying, that the soul cannot die, only the flesh can die.
The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
Jesus explains that God, the highest glorifies Him, that he has come from the divine realm and knows Him, and that Abraham is also up there and is 'glad', in John 8:54-56:
Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
Then just before he was attacked for his claim he said in John 8:58-59:
“Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!”
What he was saying is that the Divine Realm, Heaven, exists outside of time and space, that the eternal realm is different than this finite and death filled realm. The soul is different than the body.
He further explained at the beginning of John 2:16-20 that the body is simply the Temple for the soul after interacting with the money changers in the man made temple of God.
To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!”His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”[c]
The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”
Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body.
From these interctions it makes sense that Jesus came to save our souls, not our bodies. The bodies are the temples, they are important in that they're the houses for the souls. But the Jews did not understand this and believe that as the body dies, so to does the soul, as they mentioned with Abraham. Though what it also raises is why would a God who created all life on Earth, who would love us all equally, who understands that the Souls are the things created in the image of God as in Genesis 26, for God is eternal, yet the Temple is impermanent.
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Why would a God who sits beyond time and space, who is eternal, who is both creator and created, who created man in His image be a Jealous God?
We know that there are Angels, and that some of the Angels 'fell' from God's Grace. The word Angel comes from the Greek word Messenger. So the Angels, as I understand it are simply messengers of the highest God, they were also created, imbued with knowledge. The fallen Angels who lived on this Earth before the flood of Noah, sound very much like the Pagan gods, that of Ancient Egypt, of Ancient Rome, of Ancient Greece, of Ancient India, of Ancient Mesopotamia.
These little 'g' gods, or Angels, who ruled over the inhabitants of Earth do seem likely to have existed. And from what it seems, although all these religions have the understanding of a One True Creator. In Hinduism they call Him Brahman, the Buddha (who understood Vedic scripture) called him 'House Builder', the one who build the temple, the Jews call Him YHWH, The Christian's call Him God, the Muslim's call Him Allah, etc. All of these religions have the conception of a one true God, but it doesn't mean that there aren't lesser gods that were created by the one true god who are 'competing' with each other'.
Now if we go back to the original point of the God of the Jews,
The Jews were rescued out of slavery and chosen by a single 'god', the Creator God would have no favourites on Earth as we are all a part of His infinity.
So the fact that the God of the Jews rescued only them out of Egypt, and not any of the other Egyptian slaves (they all got left behind):
" I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. "
Then this god proclaimed not that there weren't other gods, but that the Jews should have no other god before him.
And the reason for doing this is that, "I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God..." just doesn't make sense if considering an immortal being. We know that humans have been tricked by dieties in the past, eve was tricked into eaten from the Tree of Knowledge, gaining self awareness, or awareness of her nakedness in the process, and subsequently disconnecting herself from God.
And we know that Satan tried to test Jesus when he wandered in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.
So couldn't the burning bush be just as likely to have been lesser god, just like the snake who deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden?
There are most definitely lesser gods, all the ancient myths and religions refer to these lesser gods living among humans, yet for the last 6,000 years we've been separated from them and given the opportunity to develop on our own.
If these lesser gods, or fallen angels as in Genesis 6:4 had slept with the Daughters of Man, the Mortal 'Temples'.
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
Then the myths being described in the Ancient Greek Epics such as Homers Odessy, The Battle of Troy, as well as the lesser gods of Hindu and other traditions may in fact be created beings, like us, but whom were meant to guide us, or perhaps just to watch over us.
If we can accept that our soul is the goal, that the image of God is our eternal soul, and the aim of God is for us to develop into the likeness of God, to learn, to be kind, to be loving to others. Then the temples he created for us, our bodies, are vessels in which we can develop.
Those Fallen Angels, or gods, simply disobeyed God for what ever selfish reason, and decided to interfere with the 'plan', this is the issue with 'Free Will', or 'Self-awareness'. It is from an awareness of self, and the choice between selfish of selfless behaviors that we assess whether a behaviour is 'Good', or 'Evil'. At the most basic level, to be 'Good' is to be selfless, to focus on ourselves insofar as it will at a later stage help others, to be 'Evil' is to be selfish, to do everything to satisfy our own desires.
Lucifer whom is considered the most 'Evil' based on his falling away from God committed the Sin of Pride, selfishly thinking that he had more foresight on how humans should behave than 'God' the infinite and eternal creator.
It is this selfishness that makes me wonder whether the 'Jealous' God, is a god that is still selfishly trying to prove themselves to the Eternal Creator God, and asks of the group of people that he saved from slavery to worship him before all other gods. In the hope that at the end of days, when Prophecy is fulfilled and the Messiah comes again, that it will either be a Messiah that will let the Jews rule the world, or will show the world that we are all one, and that God loves us all and has purposefully separated us by language, and given us different cultures, gods, and religions. Knowing that all paths lead to God, and showing that the diversity of understandings from all the races of the world, help paint a more full picture of an unknowable eternal God.
The best way to give a description of why God will do this can be expressed by the Parable of the blind men and an elephant.
We do not have the ability to 'See', God, so have to use our other faculties, such as intellect, understanding, love, and service to others, to develop our understanding of an Eternal and All-Loving being.
The Parable goes:
A group of blind men heard that a strange animal, called an elephant, had been brought to the town, but none of them were aware of its shape and form. Out of curiosity, they said: "We must inspect and know it by touch, of which we are capable". So, they sought it out, and when they found it they groped about it. The first person, whose hand landed on the trunk, said, "This being is like a thick snake". For another one whose hand reached its ear, it seemed like a kind of fan. As for another person, whose hand was upon its leg, said, the elephant is a pillar like a tree-trunk. The blind man who placed his hand upon its side said the elephant, "is a wall". Another who felt its tail, described it as a rope. The last felt its tusk, stating the elephant is that which is hard, smooth and like a spear.
By the time revelations has been fulfilled, humanity should have a better understanding of who God is, and if the prophecy is true, God will live among us, not just in human form. Distinguished by the 'Throne of God', and the 'Lamb of God' in Revelations 22:1-5:
Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

2023.06.06 06:26 Sgabonna You Shall Have No Other God Before Me.... does not mean there aren't other gods.

And we know that Satan tried to test Jesus when he wandered in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.

2023.06.06 06:20 dalanium5 Possible inspo when they were making the show

Has anyone found any less obvious old movies, history, books, etc. that might have fit into the From mythology moodboard (for lack of a better word) the creators built from?
I’m also interested in what elements y’all think are central or maybe kinda-central to the mythology. I’m feeling: travel, hospitality, vacation getaways, wherever you go there you are, monsters from within, lighthouses, water, media from the 1950s.. other stuff from this sub probably inspo in a mix it all up kinda way: historical stuff from indigenous cultures and colonization, fae stuff. Hopi grandmother spider. John Cabot, Newfoundland, etc.
I think the motivation for finding these bits of media of IRL inspo is to maybe find answers, but it’s a type of show.. where no direct correlatives are allowed! It seems
I think the show is getting too mystery for me bc of the wait times. I was super invested in the show bc of the characters and now I find myself puzzling over their situations week to week. The interactions sometimes feel so mysterious and unknowable to me. they make more sense and make more impact in total.. I’m sort of ambivalent about caring about the characters bc I know their backstories and who they are will be pivotal to the mystery. Definitely feeling more and more uninterested with character dynamics in general. Idk what the stakes are now.. what the cycle of survival is now. death still, but stifled by developments that move in stilted parallax with danger and hope.
Portrait of Jennie is a 1948 MGM movie with filming locations in Boston and New York, two places connected to Fromland residents. It also has a shooting location at one of the 14 Boston lighthouses mentioned in the travel ad on the map of Fromland residents shown in the show. The plot involves a mysterious fae girl who experiences events temporally askew of what the main character, a painter, approximates. Like she ages too fast. Something like that I’m just remembering from a wiki dive earlier today.
Someone else made a post on Martin who tells Boyd he’s from Millbrook. There’s tons of Millbrooks, but one of them is home to Alfred Hitchcock’s estate. The Man Who Knew Too Much is a 1956 mystery suspense film that popularized Doris Day’s signature “Que Sera Sera” song whose cover by the band Pixies is the show’s theme song. In the movie, the song is sung at a pivotal moment in the movie and plays an important role in the plot.
I thought these two meshed well with my impressions of a back catalog for the show. Although my description of how they connect here in shaky 1:1 fashion makes it feel less grounded. I think I’m offering them up here more for impressions and discussion’s sake than any direct theoretical correlation. Moodboard movies idk.

2023.06.06 06:01 QuestionsAboutSCJ SCJ and the Essential Doctrines of Christianity, Part 1

Shincheonji:
SCJ does not believe that Jesus is God, but instead only a created being, born of the seed Holy Spirit. They believe that Christ is a perfect man, and the perfect sacrifice that atones mankind’s sin.
They believe that he is the “Son of God” who speaks on behalf of the Father as his Spirit works through him after his baptism by John the Baptist in Matthew 3:16, John 1:29-34.
While Shincheonji will willingly lie to a Christian about this belief, it is important to keep note that they only make Jesus out to be a “Promised Pastor”, or essentially a prophet and Messiah of the Old Testament, but not God who took on Human form to die for our sins.
They share many of the same arguments as one would see with both the Muslims and the Jehovah’s Witnesses when it comes to dealing with the Deity of Christ. In essence, Shincheonji is a rebranded version of Arianism, an early church heresy that made Christ an “elevated created being”; however, it is dangerous to try to fit Shincheonji into a “mold”. Every Arian group out there, whether Unitarian, Jehovah’s Witness, or Muslim, may make similar arguments against the Deity of Christ, each group would have their own unique “taste”. When confronting Shincheonji, it is important to keep this in mind.
Arguments for the Divinity and Deity of Christ.
  1. Acceptance of worship:
What is worship?
What is idolatry?
The Bible makes it clear that God alone can accept worship, otherwise it is idolatry.
Yet despite this, Jesus accepts worship on multiple occasions throughout the New Testament:
These are just some of the verses that clearly show Jesus accepting praise and worship, something that is exclusive only to God.
Shincheonji argument as to why Jesus can accept worship:
Shincheonji believes that since Jesus is the perfect embodiment of God, but is not God himself, then therefore it is okay to worship Jesus. Shincheonji would proceed to cite John 5:23, saying that if you were to honor the Son (Jesus) then you would honor the Father (God), or Hebrews 1:3 where it states that Jesus is the radiance of God, but then they would argue that just because he is the radiance of God, it does not mean that he is God. SCJ would also cite 1 Corinthians 1:15, stating that Jesus is the image of God similar to how we are also the image of God citing Genesis 1:27 as reference.
Since Jesus is born of God’s seed through the Holy Spirit, he is an elevated being worthy of worship.
Biblical issues with the above claim:
If we were to assume that Jesus isn’t God, and yet accepts worship, even if Jesus is the “image of God” in a sense of a created being, but not God himself in terms of divine being, then by definition that is idolatry.
Throughout the Bible, we can clearly see that God does not share his glory, worship, and radiance:
We can also see that in every instance in the New Testament, whenever a created being is given worship, they immediately turn it away.
A few examples include:
When we look at Hebrews 1:3: The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
We can see that Jesus is the exact representation and being of God’s glory; something that God does not share (Isaiah 48:11).
In fact, if we read just a few verses further, we can see that Jesus is also referred to as God by the Father:
And there are even more verses where Jesus is directly referenced as God (please refer to point number 2).
As for Colossians 1:15, there are two parts of the verse:
  1. Jesus is the perfect image of God
  2. Jesus is the first born of all creation
If we read the entire context of Colossians 1:15-17, we can see that even more titles are thrown upon Jesus that point to his Deity instead.
We can see that Jesus created all things, including the Spiritual Realm and the Physical realm, and that He is before all things. A Shincheonji member would attempt to re-interpret that verse that instead Jesus only created the “Spiritual Israel” and Christianity; however, letting the text speak for itself, we can see that the statement is not true in the context of Colossians 1:15-17.
If we do not let the text speak for itself, but instead need another new “Hidden Secret”, then not only is that a direct contradiction of Revelation 22:18-19, it also further proves the point that Shincheonji has a different doctrine and a different Jesus from Orthodox Christianity, something that Paul warned us about in Galatians 1:8.
Since we know that God is the creator of all things (Isaiah 44:24), we can see that Paul was clearly inferring the Deity of Christ.
As for the title “First born of all creation”, David as "Firstborn": In Psalm 89:27, King David is referred to as God's "firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth." This does not mean that David was literally the first person born or the first king in history. Rather, it signifies his exalted position and chosen status as the anointed king of Israel.
By the definition of Idolatry, any created being that accepts worship on behalf of God is blasphemy, and directly contradicts God’s very nature and scripture.
Although Shincheonji may not make this argument now, I will also address the other common argument I have seen other groups use:
There are others who accept worship throughout the BIble, especially the Old Testament
Often, critics would point to 1 Chron. 29:20:
Then David said to the whole assembly, “Give praise to the Lord your God!” And the entire assembly praised the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and they bowed low and knelt before the Lord and the king.
Biblical Issues with the above argument:
It is important to note that the worship and homage given to David in this passage was not the same as the worship given to God. The people acknowledged God's blessings on David and his dynasty, and expressed gratitude to David for his leadership and generosity. However, there is no indication that they considered David to be divine or deserving of the same level of worship as God.
Furthermore, throughout the Bible, there is a clear distinction made between the worship due to God and the respect and honor given to human leaders. While figures like David and other prophets were respected and honored for their role in God's plan of salvation, they were never seen as divine or deserving of the same level of worship as God. The worship given to Jesus in the New Testament was of a different nature, as it involved expressions of divine adoration and submission that were reserved for God alone.
To be more specific:
John 20:28: “My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed.”
This is one of the clearest examples of not only Jesus accepting worship (as in the same chapter he does not rebuke Thomas, but instead praises him for understanding the reality), but the same title was never directly applied to David.

2023.06.06 06:01 Immediate-Week6096 [QCrit] A Place in Wonderland, New Adult, 18+, 97,500 words

Hi! I’m looking for some critique on my query, maybe things I’m missing, what works, what doesn’t. Anything helps! Thank you all in advance!
Dear (Agent Name), I am pleased to submit for your consideration, A PLACE IN WONDERLAND, a 97, 500 word New Adult novel. It’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower and will appeal to fans of Colleen Hoover and John Green. After reading that (personalization), I thought you might enjoy this!
All Aurora Medina knows is daydreaming. She is a 19-year-old Mexican-American college student who lives aimlessly day by day, and the only real excitement she sees comes from the fantastical world she escapes to in her mind. A place where she can be anything and anywhere outside of her bleak reality, outside the expectations of her overachieving immigrant parents and her best friend's push to get her with her college crush.
When Anthony Beckham, the boy she’d been secretly crushing on, offers a plan to fake-date to get their friends off their backs, Aurora reluctantly agrees. She thinks she can pretend and ignore her growing feelings for Beckham, but the more time she spends with him, the more her past trauma begins to resurface. Aurora soon learns that her feelings are the least of her problems. Aurora is stuck. Stuck in the room where it all happened, watching as the world moves on around her and she knows it is only a matter of time before Beckham moves on as well, leaving her behind. When therapy isn't giving her the outcome she is looking for, the lines between her daydreams and her reality begin to blur, and those wonderful dreams become nightmares. Aurora will have to confront her past when the only place she looks for comfort becomes a constant reminder of it.
Word of caution, the story contains important but troubling elements of childhood sexual abuse suffered by the protagonist.
I started writing when I was fourteen years old and ever since then I have dreamed of making a career out of it. I also self published a book that I wrote when I was sixteen years old that is currently available on Amazon. I look forward to your response! Sincerely,
First 300 Words of Manuscript:
I stopped at the top of the hill and took in the monument before me. There was an unnatural beauty to it. The tall, gray brick structure had been worn down by the years and had colorful vines that grew and stretched all around it, like the veins of a body. It eclipsed the sun and I was nothing but a speck compared to it. The Tower of Ev. The unnatural beauty was only a mask that shielded the power within. Ev, the all powerful and knowing, was the one person people feared the most and yet still sought him for knowledge. Many of the townsfolk had shared stories of their dealings with the wizard. According to some, people have gone mad after meeting him once. According to others, they thrived against all odds. Meeting the wizard was a coin toss, a game of chance and it wasn’t a game many were willing to play. Which was why I hesitated before taking a step forward. I’d traveled all the way to get to this moment, to meet the man who’d I’d only heard legends about and to find the answers that may save my people. But, as I stood there looking up at that monster before me, I found myself more afraid than brave. Taking in a deep breath, I wiped the sweat off my hands with my skirts and gathered as much courage as I could, but before I could take a step forward, the large wooden doors swung open, sending a gust of cool air my way. A young man stepped out. He was tall and his curly black hair almost shielded his blue eyes. He came to a stop when he noticed me standing feet away from where he was and arched a brow at me. “Are you trying to teleport inside?”

It takes its name from riverboat captain John "Gassy Jack" Deighton, believed to be one of the earliest settlers in the area in 1867. Deighton’s statue was recently torn down due to his controversial past. The neighborhood now preserves its historical character, evident by its heritage buildings and Victorian-style homes. Gastown received a national historic site of Canada designation in 2009 for its notable significance. Exploring Gastown is best discovered by wandering its cobbled streets. Sit in one of the countless restaurants and choose among incredible food options. The neighborhood has a vibrant atmosphere, full of art galleries, boutique shops, historic sites, and the iconic antique-style Steam Clock from 1977. The clock is powered by steam, and every 15 minutes it whistles to tell the time. It is the world's only still-operating steam-powered clock.
Number 9: Unique transportation Forget about typical public transportation like busses and metros and rather embark on a water adventure by riding the cute Aquabus - a unique and colorful way to travel around False Creek, and a great way to use this ferry service also if you are planning to visit the Granville Island. Enjoy a breathtaking waterfront as you ride this rainbow-colored ferry. You can also take a harbour cruise with a dinner option or ride a SeaBus, a ferry service crossing and connecting Downtown and North Vancouver. There are other unique ways to discover Vancouver and its surroundings, like exploring the city from the sky by riding a seaplane, or embarking on a whale watching tour.
Number 8: Science World Science World, located at the east end of False Creek, is a museum of science and technology built for the Expo 86 World Fair. Distinctive for its giant mirrored dome, Science World is one of Vancouver's most famous landmarks. Explore interactive indoor and outdoor exhibits, galleries, and live science demonstrations that will fuel your imagination. Whether you are a local or a traveler, alone or with the whole family, Science World is an exciting destination to spark wonder and ignite one's curiosity.
Number 7: Capilano Suspension Bridge Park Capilano Suspension Bridge is a 450 ft long and 230 ft high suspension bridge spanning the Capilano River in North Vancouver. With its convenient location, the park is one of the most visited places in Vancouver, attracting over 1.2 million visitors every year. Although the bridge has been the main attraction since 1889, there are other things to explore in the park – it also offers thrilling treetop adventures with a breathtaking rainforest view. The Cliffwalk offers a heart-stopping, spectacular view of the canyon below. Enjoy casual dining with a scenic and captivating view of the park. If you visit Vancouver between November and January, don't skip Canyon Lights - when the park transformed into a magical world. We suggest hopping on one of their free shuttle busses departing from various locations in Downtown Vancouver.
Number 6: Chinatown Vancouver's Chinatown is a historic neighborhood boasting traditional shops, cocktail bars, and rich Chinese lifestyle. The first Chinese immigrants arrived in Vancouver to work on railroads and in mining operations in the second half of the 1800s. The neighborhood developed into one of the largest Chinatowns in North America. In 2010, the it was recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada. Taste traditional and authentic Chinese specialties like dim sum in one of the neighborhood's restaurants. Walk around Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden's fascinating pavilions and pathways, the first of its kind outside China. There are other interesting neighborhoods in Vancouver. By the way, our mobile-friendly travel guide covers the top 20 things to do in Vancouver, including maps, opening hours, links to buy tickets, and other information.
Number 5: Vancouver Aquarium The Vancouver Aquarium is a popular tourist destination, home to thousands of aquatic species with over one million visitors every year. Established in 1956, it was the first and largest public aquarium in Canada. The facility is an aquarium and a center for marine research and rehabilitation. The aquarium offers a unique experience of the wonders of aquatic life through its impressive exhibits and displays. Learn about rescued marine life and watch cute sea lions in action. Vancouver Aquarium also features a 4D theatre that will transform your senses.
Number 4: Vancouver Maritime Museum Dedicated to showcasing the maritime history of the Pacific Northwest and the Arctic, the Vancouver Maritime Museum is a museum in Vanier Park that opened in 1959. The Vancouver Maritime Museum has a collection of over 15,000 artifacts, numerous model ships, and old photos that tell the stories of important historical voyages and lost expeditions. The museum's most prominent exhibit is St. Roch, a large arctic vessel used during the first west-to-east journey at the Northwest Passage through the Arctic in the 1940s. Because to its significance, the exploration vessel is listed as a National Historic Site. You can actually climb aboard the historic boat and explore the decks and cabins. Don't skip the Ben Franklin, a yellow submarine outside the museum, built for a 30-day study in the Gulf Stream in 1969. Of course, there are other museums in Vancouver worth exploring, like the nearby Museum of Vancouver.
Number 3: Vancouver Lookout Experience Vancouver in the best possible way by visiting a 553 ft high Vancouver Lookout Tower at Harbour Centre. The building was constructed in a popular brutalist style with large-scale use of poured concrete – a popular architectural style at the time. American astronaut Neil Armstrong opened the lookout in 1977. Vancouver Lookout observation deck gives a 360-degree panoramic view of Downtown and beyond. Vancouver Lookout also offers an audio tour and information panels that will help you learn about the different sights you see in front of you. Experience a breathtaking 40-second glass elevator ride of Harbour Centre, one of Vancouver's tallest buildings. You can even enjoy the Top of Vancouver Restaurant, a unique revolving diner.

Stanley Park was designated a national historic site of Canada for its beauty and connection to the environment and the city's culture. This large scenic landscape is filled with forest trails, an aquarium, beautiful beach areas, enchanting Lost Lagoon, and many other iconic sights. Walk around Rose Garden and Shakespeare Garden to enjoy beautiful landscaping paths. The park is also home Don't skip Vancouver Seawall which also passes around Stanley Park and has been declared the world's longest uninterrupted waterfront path.
Number 1: Granville Island From a former industrial wasteland to a busy shopping and market hub, the small peninsula of Granville Island is home to over 300 businesses with a million tourists annually. Granville Island Public Market is the most popular attraction, described by many as a food paradise. The market boasts seafood, fresh produce, and gourmet goods from Asian, Mexican, and Greek specialties, and more. Granville Island is also known for its artistic side, with countless theater productions, art galleries and many events. Walk around parks with many hiking trails, enjoy a glass of beer in one of Canada's original microbreweries, or embark on a whale-watching tour; there are plenty of things to discover on the peninsula. And here is the bonus that we promised. Did you know you can experience world-class skiing less than an hour away from Vancouver? If you're there during winter months, jump on a convenient ski bus from Downtown Vancouver and ski down the slopes at Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain, or Mt Seymour Resort. 2023.06.06 05:47 SecondOfCicero October Krakow Travel Planning Questions... the best soups, Magic: The Gathering, cool military stuff?

Witajcie Polscy przyjaciele!

I, 31F, decided to book myself a flight to Krakow this fall and will be in the city center area for the first part of October, for about two weeks. I'll be the first member of the family to visit the country since my great-great grandparents left Grajewo over a hundred years ago and I think they would be proud.
I have a series of questions and I apologise in advance if they are dumb- google is helpful to a point but things can change quickly and all that.
For context, I will be making use of the public transport systems and am willing to walk to my destination if the route seems safe. I like to wander and observe.

Will things be closed?

Where I live, when October comes, many things shut down for the winter season. Is this something to be aware of in the city? I'd like to see the zoo, but mine closes early in the colder months. I don't see anything about it on the Krakow Zoo's page, so maybe I just need reassurance lol.

What do I wear?

Ladies and gentlemen- what do yall wear that time of year? I am really struggling on how to pack- I will be bringing just a backpack so I want to make sure I bring the right stuff. Layers? Long johns/thermal undies? Is it not as cold as I think it will be? Looking at the historic temperatures (numbers) isn't helpful because my brain doesn't work that way :( when do you guys get out your winter stuff?

SOUP.

I really really really want to sample as many soups as I can. I've got a whole bunch of pins saved to my maps of places near the city center that have good reviews, but if there are some hidden gems, please drop them in the comments. Soup in the morning, soup in the afternoon, soup in the evening... I crave the soup. Bonus points if they have the bowls made of bread and/or a killer rosół.

Best places to find bread and cake

I love cakes and cake-like things. Direct me to the cakemakers, particularly the ones that have cupcakes. I'd like to indulge in lots of good bread while I am there. Are there any Polish cakes I should be aware of and plan to taste?

Ukrainian Friends

I have been studying Ukrainian and would like to meet some Ukrainians- if you folks are reading this, tell me where to find you so we can schmooze)))

Holidays

I didn't see any national holidays that fall during my stay, but I am very interesting in knowing if there are any local or religious holidays observed during the first few weeks of the month. Baldur's Gate III's full release is August 31st so I'll be happy to play that if everything is closed for some reason lol.

Military Surplus Stores, Militaria, Military Stuff

Museums, stores, displays, events, anything military: drop your faves! Militaria Maciej Zapiec looks cool, and so does Militaria. I'm interested in things from all eras, but particularly curious about modern gear. Bonus points if there are handsome men that orbit around the location.

Wandering Protocols

Are there any neighborhoods I should avoid, particularly at night? I'm used to Detroit, Chicago, Latin America etc- and honestly am just having a hard time fathoming anything different. Do you guys have it the same way, where one neighborhood is just fine, and then the next one over is an absolute shitshow without warning? Or is it very obvious that I should probably avoid an area? My dad worries that I'm gonna get kidnapped and chopped up into tiny pieces or something- the scenario depends on the day. He will feel better knowing I have done some type of research on the subject.

Polish-language Magic: The Gathering Cards

I would like to purchase some MTG cards in the Polish language. I'll also probably scoop some English ones, but my mission is to find some Polish ones for my decks. I see Dragonus, Game Over, and Vanaheim- is it worth visiting all three? Are there others I've missed?

Cool Cars, Car Guys, and How to See Them

I like cars, all sorts- does Krakow have car meets or something like that? I wish to see some Polish car culture, but I am not even really sure where to start with that one. I am particularly fond of old Soviet cars and stuff from that era. As with the military stuff question, bonus points are awarded if there are handsome men orbiting the cool cars.

Thank you for any and all help in advance. This is incredibly exciting for me and I feel like I'm going to spontaneously combust due to the excitement levels.

2023.06.06 05:46 Doc_Dragoon Does anyone know where to find the old video on evidence from the Gulf Breeze UFO incident?

My father was someone who was a witness to the events him and a couple of his close friends had a group sighting during the events. He said there was a local broadcast that aired just locally about the photos and a video from the event. All I've been able to find is a clip from an old interview with John Lear talking about that broadcast but not the broadcast itself. I was wondering if anyone had a link or a physical copy that could be digitized of the broadcast.

2023.06.06 05:11 Significant_Neat_689 AAI is way better than AAI2

Gonna write a 10-page essay for 2 comments and a 33% upvote rate but whatever
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's true.
The Ace Attorney fanbase is generally more analytically intelligent than most other visual novel fanbases, so it's very disappointing to see so many people lulled by AAI2's cheap parlor tricks while failing to grasp the beauty of AAI. Truly the biggest L for this subreddit.
Let's start with the overarching story: AAI is about an international smuggling ring, and AAI2 is about a man who tricks people into committing murder. That alone should dictate which game is better, but everyone seems to love Simon Keyes because of how random and unpredictable the twist was. I fail to see why the smuggling ring is so slept-on; perhaps it's too realistic or down-to-earth and the community would rather have a final villain plotting to steal the moon? But more on that later.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AAI has the biggest cases of "Seinfield is unfunny" in the series, because AAI2 is an unofficial translation and thus more accessible to people. On the other hand, AAI is only available as a DS cartridge (rather expensive), the only game not available on the 3DS eshop or Steam. Of course most people played AAI2 before AAI. SO MANY things got ruined by AAI2. I honestly think this is one of the reasons AAI2 did not get a localization.
Let's see some of the highlights:
The Great Thief Yagatarasu - Hit the hardest by this. Kay Faraday parading around the fact that she is the Yagatarasu in AAI2 is vastly different from her doing the same in Kidnapped and Ablaze. In AAI, starting from the first case, the Yagatarasu is this mysterious thief that supposedly has a lot of intel on the smuggling ring and we only get to see his silhouette and calling card. And don't forget his theme, Yagatarasu - The Gentleman Thief, which really does set the mood and fit him perfectly during the fleeting moments it plays. Kay only pretended to be the thief in two cases. I think the scarcity of the Yagatarasu appearances is what really makes the reveal so intriguing.
Yeah, and the final reveal: be honest here. The twist of it being Byrne, Calisto and Badd would have hit much harder on everyone's first playthrough of AAI without knowing anything from AAI2. What really dampens the Yatagarasu is the fact that he is brought up too many times by Kay in AAI2 (and even just her soundtrack name). Also the fact that the Yagatarasu calling card is the inverted version of the smuggling ring leader's instruction cards, to send a message that the Yagatarasu was only a few steps behind the ringleader, was absolutely brilliant and a much better last-minute twist than anything else the series ever came up with.
Calisto Yew/Shih-na - She was with Lang for his first appearance, and every consecutive one. That's what made her reveal so impactful. After AAI2 came along, she was just another one-off character. To be honest, the twist that she was Calisto Yew was completely unexpected, although maybe I should have realized beforehand. I also think the way she is finally cornered is pretty awesome. Setting alight the coat to reveal the Bahbalese ink burning green, pretty symbolic of her smuggling acts finally brought to light.
Shi-Long Lang character development - I'm surprised how no one mentions this. It's on the same level as Sebastian's development, and I think the only reason it's so slept-on is because in AAI2, the cases are normally so dull that you have no other choice but to focus on the characters, while AAI Lang shares the stage with the rest of the plot. The way he goes from respectfully hating on prosecutors as a super serious officer to "Lang Zi says: ...just go already!" and supporting Edgeworth in his trial after the credits is super awesome. Him losing his position in Interpol is worse than Yuri Cosmos getting demoted after Turnabout For Tomorrow in terms of discomfort food. I feel like the way Lang is introduced in AAI2 really does discredit all his character development in AAI.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now let's compare all aspects of each game:
Case 1 (general): Visitor > Target. Visitor is the most underrated case in the series, and Target is a 3-hour long snooze-fest. Target is a case 1 yet fails to be an intro case and thus is not good, that's what it boils down to.
Case 1 (witnesses): Visitor == Target. Visitor brought back Maggey who is one of the blandest characters in the series, but Target's defendant wasn't any better. Target also managed to fumble de Killer's appearance into a very boring confrontation, so they are about tied.
Case 1 (culprit, single-case): Portsman > Knightley. The prosecutorial interactions were much more fun than that overconfident bodyguard.
Example --
Portsman: It's a possibility. Maybe your salary's been cut so much that life is getting a little too rough to handle...?
Gumshoe: I'll have you know that I eat three square meals every day, pal! ...OK, so all three of them happen to be instant noodles, but...
Portsman: Poor thing. What an evil prosecutor you were paired up with. And what a motive, no?
Case 1 (culprit, whole game): Knightley > Portsman. Sure. The case 1 culprit can have a huge impact on the overarching story. Knightley was one of the better plotwise characters of AAI2.
Case 2 (general): Airlines > Imprisoned. Airlines just edges out Imprisoned slightly, but I admit Imprisoned is the only AAI2 case that deserves all the praise it gets. But I think the twists and turns were just a bit better for Airlines, especially the final Logic flashback segment as Lablanc slowly fell over the railing.
Case 2 (witnesses): Airlines > Imprisoned. Zinc Lablanc carries the entire case, like Luke Atmey did. Rhoda Teneiro was also cool. Jay Elbird and Frank Sahwit can't compare, and even Keyes' performance in this case, even knowing that he manipulated Knightley's death, doesn't quite reach Airlines' level of beautiful simplicity here. Dogen was just a plot device in this episode.
Case 2 (culprit, single-case): Meele == Roland. Both had godawful motives and mild characters.
Case 2 (culprit, whole game): Roland > Meele. Of course, because Roland got a whole other backstory while Meele stayed the same.
Case 3 (general): Inherited > Kidnapped. Yeah, alright. Who knew that letting you play as Gregory Edgeworth in the events leading up to DL-6 would be more interesting for the audience than actually coming up with an original idea? F for effort, I guess.
Case 3 (witnesses): Inherited > Kidnapped. Mainly because Ema Skye was absolutely useless in Kidnapped. Lauren Paups was also pretty bad. Inherited only had some meh witnesses, nothing outstanding, but still better than Kidnapped.
Case 3 (culprit, single-case): Gustavia > Lance. Well, yeah. Lance did kill only in self defense, while Gustavia and Dover had a whole storyline going. I feel like Kidnapped was meant to be a breath of fresh air from the constant murder grind, like Stolen. Too bad neither case ended up being great.
Case 3 (culprit, whole game): Lance > Gustavia. Well, not quite Lance himself, but the effect it had by prompting Ernest Amano to forge evidence, get caught and questioned, and give up the evidence to the KG-8 incident was pretty impactful. Gustavia, while the first of many things that ticked off Keyes, was also the only part of his story that wasn't really carefully intertwined with anything else.
Case 4 (general): Reminiscence == Forgotten. Interestingly, the one case everyone seems to like in AAI is actually not that great, all things considered. Forgotten was a very slow case with boring investigation sequences all around, but Reminiscence had terrible character interactions and was paced horribly.
Case 4 (witnesses): Reminiscence > Forgotten. Detective Badd blows everyone else out of the water. The Judge was alright, and Gumshoe was pretty subpar. But still, better than whatever AAI2 was trying to do with Lotta Hart and Nicole Swift.
Case 4 (culprit, single-case): Calisto == Blaise. I can't really say one was better than the other. Calisto's double murder and escape managed to top the previous 3-4 for "best loose end", but Blaise was no slouch either.
Case 4 (culprit, whole game): Calisto > Blaise. Doesn't need an explanation.
Now for the opinion that will get me downvoted. Turnabout Ablaze is a better case than The Grand Turnabout, both as a finale and in general.
Firstly, Colias Palaeno was a better final plot device character than John Marsh. Palaeno was introduced as this very suspicious character, only to later become the most helpful witness in the entire series, and the only person who didn't lie, ever. Despite overdoing his coupon-dealing gimmick, it never really got old or tedious. And come on, he was just a cool guy all around. His interactions with Alba were also very interesting considering the history between their countries. Palaeno is the perfect example of how to write a compelling plot device character.
On the other hand, John Marsh never really made an impact and his edgy teenager persona was just meh. Him refusing to take revenge on Dogen in the end was cool, but he was still not as good a character overall. His kidnapping was mainly to develop Courtney's character, but even she was not that interesting in the end. And his twist of being the president's son was very underwhelming, if I'm being honest.
Every case 5 is traditionally the resolution of two different murders. For AAI, it was Ka-Shi Nou murdered in the Allebahstian embassy, and Manny Coachen murdered in the Bahbalese embassy on the same night. For AAI2, it was the body double's murder out of the blue and the real president's murder 12 years ago. Surely Ablaze has a much better premise already.
Ablaze is a very symmetrical, well-organized case with the themes of duality. Allebahst has strict migration laws and an old army general as the ambassador, who appears to be a kindly old man. Bahbal is a very lax tourist country with a young advertising ambassador who is suspiciously cheerful. And yet, Ambassador Alba is the villain behind the smuggling ring while Ambassador Palaeno is hopelessly clueless about his secretary Coachen. I really like the dynamic amongst the characters here. Even Coachen gets characterization from Palaeno's relationship with him and sadness at his death.
Honestly, I thought the premise of the country split in two was a very intriguing setup. Even for people who aren't super interested in history-esque topics, the case should provide a novel setting. The competition to see which embassy had the legitimate statue, the goodwill ambassadorship involving the Steel Samurai, the reuniting of Cohdopia, everything really felt like something big and exciting was happening.
How many people actually played Ablaze fully? I bet half the people who hate on Turnabout Ablaze here don't even know that the embassy was set on fire in the case. They only watched Alba's breakdown, went on the wiki to find out the two victims, and called it a day before formulating their opinion. They missed out on everything, like the safe-opening puzzle and the secret of the Yagatasaru key/"knife", and figuring out how the two statues and the body got transported between the embassies.
Unlike Ablaze's very uniform and straightforward setup, The Grand Turnabout is just a speed-rap of a case with very sporadic events that feel like it's just thrown at you randomly so you never get bored of one single topic. So right after exposing Blaise as the killer, you find the president of Zheng Fa is murdered. You go to question someone, but she is currently judging Roland's trial for the murder of Knightley. Then Blaise turns out to not get in any trouble for what happened in Forgotten. Then Marsh gets kidnapped and you decide to join the trial and help Sebastian. He then runs away and you stall for time until Marsh is found and Sebastian comes back and proves that Blaise tampered with evidence. So he gets arrested after all and Roland is guilty. Then you get a mysterious radio call telling you to go to an orphanage, where you find out that the real president (along with some other guy) was killed there 12 years ago. With a very tedious Little Thief investigation sequence. Now you trace back who called you on the radio and pin every single crime in the game onto him. And Dogen helped, a bit. The end.
There were zero compelling aspects of the case. It feels like the case was entirely written to showcase character development for half the cast, and the actual plot points are half-assed and not bothered with. The final reveal is just a cheap cop-out by going "oh actually A and B are connected. Wow!". I feel like The Grand Turnabout is actually the worst-written case of AAI2 in terms of sheer writing. Every event is random until the final reveal. The way the events proceed is also very weird and feels very unpolished. The investigation drags on way longer than Alba's confrontation does. No way people like this mess of a case more than Ablaze just because it has more rewarding/overstimulating moments at times and uses shock value.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's funny that AAI has the overarching plot be straightforward and each individual case have its twists and turns, while AAI2 is the exact opposite. Each case basically feels like the game just leads you along a long, drawn-out and boring path to the answer while the actual overarching plot is this convoluted, improbable steaming mess of a story.
I really don't think Keyes was all that special. Sure, there were minute hints scattered throughout the game before he is revealed to be the mastermind. Sure, he had a compelling motive. But in the end, it all boils down to "oh remember all that? well, the major twist is that they are connected!". Just a weak cop-out finale that manages to be flashy enough to woo half the audience. But what I really dislike about Keyes is the way he was caught. I personally think that final villains should try to not get caught. Keyes was so cocky that he was toying with Edgeworth on purpose. Kidnapping Kay and John, teasing Edgeworth over the radio, he basically flew too close to the sun and paid the price. Alba, on the other hand, wanted nothing to do with Edgeworth or the rest of the cast.
I think half of what makes a compelling villain is how they try to avoid being caught. Alba managed to stay low and avoid detection for 10 years, while still running the smuggling ring. His confrontations felt very calm and collected, and just overall very professional at maintaining his innocence. Unlike Keyes who just keeps laughing at you and mocking you. Sure, both characters had high egos, but bottom line: Keyes got too cocky from a few successful manipulations while Alba maintained his confidence in his position which he has decades of experience in.
Yes, Alba was very stubborn and makes the final fight drag on, but that should be a good thing for his character. Shows he is very experienced and well-prepared for law enforcement. Honestly, my one complaint is that his fight didn't drag on even longer; I think that him losing his ambassadorship was a bit too easy and he should have put up more of a fight regarding that. People say Alba was too generically evil, but I think that he is actually unique in the way that he is the first pure villain as a final villain. Remember, von Karma and Gant were not full-time criminals; they were law enforcement who killed once and then were caught trying to cover up their crime. Engarde was an actor who only cared about publicity. Godot was, well, not exactly a criminal. Gavin was a lawyer who did anything to win his case and held grudges. Up until then, we never had a professional criminal as a final villain until Alba. Taking someone like him down should be expected to be difficult, long and tedious. Also his breakdown was much more rewarding than Keyes' getting beat up by animals, mostly because Keyes kinda deserved more than that. If Keyes had been punished harder, his breakdown might have been more satisfying than Alba's, to be fair.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AAI also has a better soundtrack than AAI2, and you can fight me on that. AAI2 may have some earwormy tracks, but it's like this: AAIs soundtrack actually sounds like it was composed for the game. Tracks like the Yagatarasu's theme (not Kay, the actual Yagatarasu) and Torn Apart Countries fit the mood and set the grandiose atmosphere perfectly. AAI2s soundtrack is just the artist taking a picture of the character, showing it to a composer, and going "make a theme for him". The Man Who Masterminds the Game may be more catchy than The Enemy Who Surpasses the Law, but the latter definitely suits its respective character and confrontation as a whole more. And I just gotta appreciate a fitting theme more than an earwormy one.
Honestly, Objection 2009 was better than Objection 2011 just because it felt so much more satisfying in a calm, procedural manner, like "Okay, so we figured this out. Make a mental note of this for later". Objection 2011 is a TV-show opening for Edgeworth. It might be very catchy, but I honestly think it doesn't fit a single moment in which it is played and is just an overstimulation.
Also I will get ostracized for saying this, but Lying Coldly was a perfect take on how a pursuit theme for Edgeworth would sound, that Wanting to Find the Truth completely ruined in favor of sounding more like a generic pursuit theme. It may be a good song, but it has none of the charm that Lying Coldly had.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AAI2s translation team, to be honest, did a pretty bad job. (Preface: yes I know criticism like this is mean and uncalled for but since AAI2 isn't even their game, I think it is fair to criticize their take on it after they imposed themselves onto Capcom's game.)
Let's start with the voicelines. Sebastian Debeste's voice actor was the only one who did a good job. Everyone else's voices were way too "high-quality sound" to fit AAs theme. Like, especially ProZDs take on Gregory Edgeworth, who sounds like a 20 year old with a smoking problem and a mouth that's 2cm in diameter. It especially contrasts von Karma's voice in Inherited and is clearly out of place. Sorry, but ProZD was an absolute garbage casting choice for Gregory. I don't care what you say, Courtney is not British. Knightley and Shields' voices are just too realistic and not AA sounding. Keyes and Blaise are the only other objections that almost fit the bill, almost.
Again, though, massive props to Sebastian's voice actor. He absolutely nailed his voiceclip.
On a related note, I think Alba and Calisto's objections are actually not bad because remember, they are (Alba definitely, Calisto I assume so since she works for him) foreigners who originate from Cohdopia. It makes sense for them to have an accent when speaking English, and with only one word to go off of, their accent sounds exactly like one would expect. It's surprising how most people can't make that basic connection and instead go straight to mindless hating. Ace Attorney's fanbase is supposed to be smarter than that.
Okay now back to the translation team, the overall dialogue for AAI2 feels much more dry. It's not as easy as you'd expect to capture the tones of each character during the translation, and the translation team kind of failed at that. The dialogue for the returning characters, especially Gumshoe and Kay, feel much more uniform and really lack the charm that AAIs official translation had. Try playing AAI and AAI2 in alternating cases side-by-side and the difference becomes clear as day.
Not just the dialogue in general, but also the quips and banter during the investigation sequences between main characters. Especially that one time in Inherited in which young Shields quotes Godot's "blacker than a moonless night" soliloque, for Gregory to think to himself "note: coffee has a bad effect on lawyers". If you really think about it, this took place before T&T and there is no way Godot would just quote Shields, so it's a really weird continuity plothole that both people say the same thing, like a 4th wall break. It's supposed to be a joke, but come on. Capcom wouldn't actually do something so unprofessional like that, and the translation team really had to make that weird joke a permanent part of Capcom's game. It's an official game so it's supposed to be more professional than using 4th wall breaks like that. This may seem nitpicky, but again - official Capcom game.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course, people can like whatever they like. You may prefer a culprit that is over-the-top crazy more than a down-to-Earth one. You can like an unpredictable, convoluted overarching story more than a well-written one. But objectively, from a critical, unbiased point of view, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is a much better-written, higher quality work than Gyakuten Kenji 2. No amount of rose-colored glasses can change that, sorry.

2023.06.06 05:05 ORPeregrine My dreams of the Old Ways

I initially typed this up about two weeks ago and shared it with my wife. She's the girl that dreams about toast growing legs and following her to work. She likes to tell me her "crackhead dreams" and wonders why I don't share. This is why.
Names have been changed.
I write this down because I woke this morning from a dream so real I had to convince myself it was not and I feel the need to. It was a recurring dream, I realize that now. Maybe five times, maybe more. Always the dream was slightly different. Assuming my mind is not playing tricks on me, and it very well may be, I first had this dream around the time I left REDACTED. I now recall that I never failed to wake up terrified.
I would walk out of my office in the Jefferson basement, through John's workshop, and there was a doorway that led to something…old. Something that predated the building, the city, the state. The Old Ways were stone; there was running water and darkness. The water was always in a canal, no more than a foot or two wide, stone as well. Sometimes it was chest high, sometimes there was a small stone bridge to pass over. By stone I mean limestone or something sedimentary, not finished, rough as though hewn, worn by the constant flow of water and padding of feet.
There was a like place in the Holbrooke basement, kitchen side, the staff laundry had running water in a similar limestone channel, but it was just a small section. Usually it ran under the floor and disappeared, sometimes there was a door. Only I could see it, sometimes I couldn't, but I could always feel it. I knew that it was connected to that other place, I went in once. Never again.
In Jefferson it was endless tunnels, utterly dark, cold, and that constantly running water. The tunnels lead somewhere, sometimes there were people there with me as we walked, Matt was there once. He knew where he was headed, of course he did, he was the only one that ever did. He showed me where I needed to go, and why, though I can't recall what that was now.
There was something in the darkness, I could never see it, but I could feel it. Sense it. I was the only one that ever could. I was the only one that knew that it hated us, or maybe just me, that it wanted us to stay forever in the dark and the cold. And I would run. I would run and leave everyone behind and only I would get out. Ever. Last night was the first time that I was there alone. Also unlike the other times, I did not enter the place in my dream. I was already there. Already known. Hated. Hunted. Cold. I never left. My alarm woke me after I spent hours wandering, for the first time unable to find my way out. I write this down all these hours later to convince myself that it wasn't real. That the Old Ways aren't real.

Heyman Classic IV Qualifiers: The First Days of Disco!
Welcome to the first round of the Heyman Classic! We’re live from the place often credited as disco’s birthplace, David Mancuso’s “The Loft”, right on 647 Broadway! This insane tournament has sixteen of the finest names in our sport, and we kick off the Age of Disco with seven incredible contests tonight! Now, before we jump in, I must remind you that while the rest of the tournament will be under double elimination rules, the first round is single elimination, essentially qualifiers. You lose, you’re out.
The Loft.
That’s My Eye, I Don’t Know You! British Rounds: Code Blue vs. Jay Castle
Our one and only non-Heyman match of the evening! Jay Castle and Code Blue both have Heyman Classic matches, against Travis Crowley and T.M. Imran respectively, but both are taking place at WarZone. So, these two rivals are free to face off tonight. Jay Castle, desperate to put down Code Blue once and for all and usurp him, as they sit at 1-1 in their series. Code Blue, set on revenge against the man that took half of his vision away from him. Code Blue lamented not being able to use a closed fist punch on Jay Castle in their last Pure Rules contest, and Jay Castle is a skilled Pure competitor. How will all of these factors contribute to this British Rounds match?
Prompt: Book a Nigel McGuinness return run (Min/Max Three Parts of 1000 words each)

Two Man Sound: Desmond Caid vs. Sebastian King
Two Man Sound were pioneers of Belgian Disco, but if you were to ask FBE competitors to identify which duo among our ranks would be called Two Man Sound, everybody would say Desmond Caid and Sebastian King. With Speak of the Devil and The Abortion Clinic being this place’s two auditory serials, this battle doesn’t just determine who advances to the Heyman Classic’s second round, it determines who’s the best podcaster in FBE. Will The Devil speak of victory, or will he be coat-hangered into oblivion?
Prompt: Book the Blackpool Combat Club feuding with a faction of your choosing (Max One Part)

Going Through These Changes: Misery vs. Nate Matthews
While Joe Simon’s lyrics on “Going Through These Changes” don’t exactly fit this situation, the title couldn’t be more accurate. On one side of this matchup, we’ve got Nate Matthews, the ultimate OG, the man who became Grand Slam Champion in just seven months. He’s done almost everything there is to do here. On the other side is the newest competitor in the Heyman Classic, a recent Junior Grad, and former Junior Ace, Misery. This is old school vs. new gen at its finest. Will Nate Matthews keep the torch firmly in his grasp, or will Misery forcefully take it from him?
Prompt: Book a current World Champion joining a different promotion (Max One Part)

Blood and Honey: Ethan Fadely vs. Logan Wright
Amanda Lear’s 1976 disco classic, “Blood and Honey”, is a tale of torturous love. That couldn’t be further from how the competitors in this match feel about each other, as there’s no love lost, but the title describes them to a tee. Blood, the evil, backstabbing snake of a man, Ethan Fadely. The Heyman-Classic winning Summer of Roses turned to an Autumn of Thorns, and an entire summer later, the roses have died. On the other side, Honey, an FBE Tag Team Champion, beloved by the fanbase. The Aether Aces vs. The Ark. Opposite ends of the spectrum, opposite ends of a feud still burning bright, but they have the same goal in mind: advancing to Round Two.
Prompt: Book a wrestler winning a championship for the first time (Max One Part)

Give It Up: Hunter Maguire vs. Inferno
Give It Up is one of the most relevant disco songs, even to this day, as it has become a chant for soccefootball clubs all across the United Kingdom. There’s a chance that a young Inferno once sat high up in the cheap seats singing along with his countrymen, before he became the bastard of a World Champion that we have today. However, when an Irish team defeats an English one, the song is often mockingly co-opted (Case in point, the recent “Lizzie’s in a Box” chants). There’s a good chance that Hunter Maguire has pinched his nose and sang a vulgar variation at Londoners and Brummies, laughing his ass off. Only one of them will be singing the celebratory tune tonight, though. Which competitor will seize the opportunity, and which one will Give It Up?
Prompt: Book a feud ending in a stipulation match that hasn’t been done in WWE/AEW/NJPW for at least five years (Max One Part)

Rock The Boat: Cactus Mike vs. Kaze Tanaka
The boat will be rocked, but will it tip over? Cactus Mike and Kaze Tanaka are stablemates in one of the most tight-knit factions to ever grace an FBE canvas. The Ark has not sunk yet, but one of these two competitors will, unfortunately, have to walk the plank right out of the Heyman Classic. Will Kaze Tanaka, former FBE World Heavyweight Champion, put down one of his best friends for a second round berth, or will perennial babyface Cactus Mike pull off the victory and set sail in this storied tourney?
Prompt: Book a star from your opponent’s company in your company (Kaze: WCW, Mike: WWF) (Max One Part)

Rise: Capital STEEZ vs. JOHN
“Rise” is one of the most famous instrumental disco tracks ever. Herb Alpert’s masterpiece was tremendous on his own, but was made even more popular when Brooklyn’s Biggie Smalls sampled it in one of his biggest songs, “Hypnotize”. JOHN has a rise of his own, and that’s The RISE, the faction that he reps. However, former Heyman Classic winner Capital STEEZ is trying to pull it off again, and when he’s at his best, he’s near impossible to stop. Will JOHN pull off a Miracle in Manhattan, getting past the four-time champ and RISING to the top of the FBE mountain, or will STEEZ, less than an hour away from his home borough of Brooklyn, pull a Biggie and turn somebody else’s “Rise” into his own?
Prompt: Book a wrestler in an era of WWF/WWE that they did not participate in (No Part Limit)

The music stops on Friday, June 9th, at 11 PM EST. No getting off the dance floor until your bookings are posted.
