2023.06.01 00:37 heisenvergas_ Looking for a decent gaming and work laptop with touch input under $1.5K. Help me decide?
Currently looking at two of them:
OPTION ONE: HP - ENVY 16" Wide Quad XGA Intel Core i9 16GB Memory NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 1TB SSD model: 16-h1023dx $1350
OPTION Two: ASUS - ROG FLOW X16 AMD Ryzen 9 16GB DDR5 Memory NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 1TB SSD model: GV601RM-X16.R93060 $1490
Mostly play RTS/TBS games, so I need a good CPU/GPU. For work stuff, the minimum GPU requirements would be either an RTX A3000 or an RTX 3060. I really like that the HP has the i9 and the RTX 4060, and still slightly cheaper than the X16; however what troubles me is that, for the HP, I've been unable to find any reviews (except this one review on YouTube with only 4 views) and other crucial information it like battery life or performance. Furthermore, I find it a little odd that it's not listed on HP's website, just on BestBuy. If anyone has bought one of these, I would highly value your opinion.
Which one would you choose? Any suggestions or other recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

2023.06.01 00:13 JWNiner Some Hopefully Helpful Performance Tips (Very Long Post)
I'm playing SC on an i7 9700f + GTX 1660 + 32GB Ram + 2 1TB ssd drives on Windows 11. I'm playing at 1080p limited to 60 fps (my monitors refresh rate) and consistently get in the low 30's fps wise with an occasional significant dip in physics intensive situations and the cities. All settings on high except clouds which are at medium and the game plays pretty smooth for me.
As an owner of older hardware, I've been told this is pretty good. So I thought I'd share many of the numerous steps I've taken to get the game where it is for me to hopefully help any players with lower spec machines like mine. This will also be an opportunity for me to hear from others with more knowledge or experience on what I may have done wrong or could be doing better
A list of stuff I've done to improve performance in SC (as comprehensive as I could make it, but I may have forgotten some steps):
WINDOWS SPECIFIC
- Disabled Full Screen optimization and run SC as Admin (Properties panel, Compatibility tab)
- Used Reg Edit to set SC to High Priority
- Whitelisted SC in your PC's antivirus
- Tried playing with Game Mode on and off (Some have reported degraded performance with it on, but I haven't noticed an appreciable difference either way)
- Disabled Windows Game Bar (different from Game Mode)
- Moved my Page File to my second SSD and set it to 1.5x my Ram (48GB)
- Used Empty Standby List to clear the Standby List on my RAM and set it to run automatically at startup
- Used Winaero Tweaker to turn off Windows ad tracking and any unused features (don't need touchscreen controller if you don't have a touchscreen)
- Used Chris Titus Tech Windows 10/11 Toolbox to enable Ultimate Power Performance Plan and to trim even more fat off of Windows
- Used MSI Utility (not Afterburner, this is different) and made sure my Graphics card had the MSI box checked. Some people change the interrupt priority to high as well, but I've heard that can make the game significantly more unstable)
- Used TCP Optimizer to boost my internet performance since SC's performance is heavily impacted by the health of ones internet connection (I have to use WiFi to connect online and average between 85 to 100 ping)
- I ended up adding an AiO cooler to my rig even though my hardware doesn't technically need it and it made a world of difference (But I live in the Deserts of Arizona, USA)
- Used MSI afterburner's auto overclock feature to run a mild, stable overclock (others have reported serious issues between SC and Afterburner. I personally haven't had any though, YMMV)
- Used Riva Tuner Statistics (comes with Afterburner) to frame limit SC to my moniters refresh rate (60Hz/60fps)
- Turned off Core Isolation in the Windows Security settings (this does leave ones device more vulnerable to malicious software however)
Something I didn't do because my CPU is older Gen is to turn off E-Cores in my CPU. My CPU doesn't have E-Cores
The other thing I didn't do (because the BIOS on my HP branded proprietary motherboard is hot garbage) is to doublecheck that my RAM is running at its rated clock speed (it isn't and can't)
NVIDIA SPECIFIC
- Used DDUninstaller to remove my old NVIDIA drivers and reinstalled using NVCleanstall to remove unneeded bloat and tracking software in the drivers
- Used the NVIDIA Profile Inspector (not Control Panel, different utility again) to change NVIDIA Predefined Ansel Usage to Disallow
- Forced off all GSYNC features since my monitor doesn't support it and turned on all rBAR features even though it isn't unsupported on my card (improves fps anyways for some reason)
- Disabled MPO (Multiplane Overlay) using Reg Edit (NVIDIA suggests doing this for their cards and even provides a script file on their website to do it for you and NVCleanstall can do it as well)
NVIDIA Control Panel Settings
Image Scaling OFF
Ambient Occlusion OFF
Anisotropic Filtering OFF
Antialiasing (all) OFF
Background Application Max Frame Rate OFF
CUDA - GPUs ALL
DSR (all) OFF
Low Latency Mode Ultra
Max Frame Rate OFF
MFAA OFF

Shader Cache Size 10GB
Texture Filtering - Anisotropic On
Texture Filtering - Negative LOD Allow
Texture Filtering - Quality Performance
Texture Filtering - Trilinear Opt On
Threaded Optimization On
Triple Buffering On
Vertical Sync Fast
Vulkan/OpenGL Auto
I've also placed a user config file in my SC folder with commands I've found in various YouTube videos. I know that some of them either never worked as intended or no longer work, but I'm not sure which ones. So I elected to just leave them in

2023.05.31 17:23 Ascerta How I got decent thermals with low fan noise on my gaming laptop
| Preface : I enjoy gaming. I love my gaming laptop and I'll never go back to the bulkier desktop PC. I have a family at home that used to complain about the jet engine that is my laptop under long gaming hours, especially at night. I took it into consideration and had to something. My goal : Being able to play with a target FPS of 80 (capped) on any games (on high graphic settings), with decent thermals (for a gaming laptop) and with low fan noise. My specs : HP Omen 15-en1037nf Gaming Laptop - Nvidia RTX 3070m
- AMD Ryzen 7 5800H (3,2 GHz / 4,4 GHz with boost)
- 16 GB RAM
- NVME SSDs
- I play on an CHG90 ultrawide monitor with a resolution of 3840*1080 (more than 4 millions pixels to render)
The results : Star Wars Battlefront 2 Chivalry 2 How to : First off, the gaming laptop has to be cleaned out of dust and pasted accordingly. 1) The CPU As you may know, the CPU is the biggest culprit in terms of heat when it comes to gaming laptops. This Ryzen 7 5800H chip cannot be undervolted. Though it is a very powerful CPU, with somewhat agressive performance with a 105°C max temperature limit. Disabling the Turbo Boost I figured I don't need all this performance, I don't need to play my games at 144 FPS and all the inconveniences that come with it, so I disabled the Turbo Boost via a regedit (CPU will be maxed at its 3,2 GHz base clock). Yes, I know many of you are against it, but I firmly believe there is no point in having such a powerful CPU if you cannot cool it efficiently. The extra performance added by the Turbo is not a lot compared, especially in games that relies more the GPU, however it adds a lot of extra heat. Downloading Ryzen Controller Ryzen Controller is a downloadable app for AMD CPUs. I will only be using the setting "Temperature Limit" and set it to 79°C max for the CPU. Therefore, whenever the CPU reaches this temperature, the application will automatically lower the base clock of the CPU. This is important, because without this app, the CPU will rely on the fans to spin more RPMs instead, that we don't want. You can create a custom preset for this and set it to activate every time the app launches at startup. Ryzen Controller 2) The Fans Damn they can be noisy. We have to keep them quiet. There are many apps to control them, but I'll be using the default OMEN Gaming Hub. Power Mode is set on "Balanced". Thermal Controls are set on "Manual". The CPU never goes above 80°C in general with turbo boost off and Ryzen Controller activated. I don't want the fans to go higher than 53% which is roughly 3100 RPMs or 38 Decibels (I used my smartphone so it may not be 100% accurate). Above this RPM value, the fans would spin too much to my liking. Though we'll keep one last dot at 90°C to spin the fans at 100% should anything happen, just in case. CPU Fans Regarding the GPU, it never goes above 75°C in general, so we'll set the max fan speed at 50% for 75°C. Anything beyond that, just like the CPU, is just in case. GPU Fans Conclusion I've already posted the screenshot results above and I am very pleased with them. - The laptop makes very little noise (max 38 Db if my smartphone is accurate enough), it's comparable to a properly cooled desktop PC.
- The thermals are decent : from 70°C to 80°C during gaming (could be lowered to the 60°C with "Auto" fan management at the cost of noise). From 40 to 55°C during work/internet.
- Games are fluid and smooth, 80 FPS capped is a sweet spot for my 3840*1080 resolution and don't feel like I lost a lot in performance.
Having an almost silent laptop while retaining most of the performance and keeping thermals low is very satisfying. Please comment on what you think about this, or if you have any tips to give. submitted by Ascerta to GamingLaptops [link] [comments] |

2023.05.31 15:53 Butters_Is_Grounded Hisuian Decidueye Discussion
| https://preview.redd.it/6ht8b8b8d73b1.png?width=843&format=png&auto=webp&s=4578a2410e337544e50082aa415eb08dfd652047 Typing: Grass/Fighting Abilities: Overgrow, Scrappy HP: 88 Attack: 112 Defense: 80 Sp. Atk: 95 Sp. Def: 95 Speed: 60 This pokemon is not an OU pokemon. Its stats arent necessarily impressive. It shares its typing with Breloom, who is 10 base speed faster and has a significantly higher attacking stat. Yes, its bulkier, and can hit ghost types, but if you want a Scrappy Fighting type, Flamigo is probably better at that. Hisuian Decidueye will also face competition from Chesnaught, if it ever drops (it probably will..), who is 4 points faster, a lot physicall bulkier, and has a better defensive ability in Overcoat. It also has belly drum, and ground coverage against fire types. H-Decidueye is slightly stronger with arguably deeper movepool. Chesnaught also lacks Knock Off, U-turn and Defog, which are notable utility moves for Decidueye It could, however, be a UU pokemon? Seeing as Alolan Decidueye is in the tier at the moment, and it's Hisuian form has some unique advantages over its counterpart, it could be a solid pokemon in the tier. Notable Moves: Signature Move - Triple Arrows. A 90 base power, 100% accurate move. It has a 50% chance of lowering the opponents defense by one stage, and 30% chance of flinch. (Serene Grace in AAA would go crazy haha) Other notable attacks - Close Combat, Bullet Seed, Leaf Blade, Brave Bird, Shadow Claw, Sucker Punch, U-turn, Knock Off, Trailblaze, Tera Blast, Shadow Sneak, Sucker Punch Status Moves - Defog, Roost, Bulk Up, Swords Dance, Tailwind, Synthesis, Substitute, Taunt, Spite Grass/Fighting/Flying is great coverage and is only resisted by a handful of pokemon e.g Oricorio Pom Pom, Thundurus, Zapdos (who probably won't leave OU) and Kilowattrel. A set of Knock Off, Triple Arrows and Brave Bird hits everything relevant in SV UU. Tera blast Ice could be good, with Tera Ice hitting Aformentioned flying types. Ice also hits big offensive threats like Iron Jugulis, Salamence, and Staraptor. Unlike it's alolan form, Hisuian Decidueye is weak to adverse contact effects like Flame Body, Cursed Body and Rocky Helmet. i'd argue that Alolan Decidueye's ability is superior in the UU metagame. Scrappy is not that beneficial where a lot of the ghost types have a secondary typing which makes them resist ghost anyways, e.g Gengar and Mimikyu. Hisuian Decidueye can always hit ghost types with Knock Off. Scrappy's other benefit is not being effected by intimidate, which is a fairly common ability with the Paldean Tauros formes, and Special/Specs Salamences. Physical mence, Gyarados, and Staraptor would rather run alternate abilities instead of Intimidate. Once again, I feel like Long Reach would have been a better ability. There is some merit to running Overgrow - Loaded Dice Bullet Seed with an Adamant nature can secure a lot of meaningful KOs if your opponent has already tera'd: 252+ Atk Decidueye-Hisui Bullet Seed (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Alomomola: 340-420 (63.6 - 78.6%) -- approx. 2HKO 252+ Atk Overgrow Decidueye-Hisui Bullet Seed (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Alomomola: 510-610 (95.5 - 114.2%) -- approx. 93.8% chance to OHKO 252+ Atk Decidueye-Hisui Bullet Seed (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 280-340 (71 - 86.2%) -- approx. 2HKO 252+ Atk Overgrow Decidueye-Hisui Bullet Seed (5 hits) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro: 420-490 (106.5 - 124.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO Hisuian Decidueye honestly looks like it could be a great Stallbreaker with a set of Knock Off / Triple Arrows / Bullet Seed / Roost. You punish slow bulky mons with defense drops and flinches. You can remove items like leftovers to weaken walls for other pokemon. You threaten supereffective damage on the tier's 3 regenerator pokemon, and other defensive staples like Quagsire and Blissey. Rock tomb could even be used to punish switching in Talonflames. Brave bird could also secure KOs and 252 HP / 252 SpDef Toedscruel. I think despite H-Deci's low speed, some speed EVs should still be invested. 84 Speed EVs makes sure you outspeed base 70 speed pokemon without investment, like WO-Chien. It also makes you outspeed Alolamola, Pelipper, Defensive Scizor, and Defensive Tyranitar sets. Jolly Max H-deci reaches 240 speed, which could give it a jump on Tinkaton's without speed investment, Defensive Rotom-heat, Max Defence Quaquaval. Scarf + Jolly 252 outspeeds all pokemon at +0 except Talonflame, Kilowattrel, Noivern, Cyclizar, Greninja and Floatzel (outside of rain). set ideas: Decidueye-Hisui @ Choice Band Ability: Scrappy Tera Type: Fighting EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe Adamant Nature - Close Combat / Tripple Arrows - Leaf Blade - Brave Bird / Knock Off / Sucker Punch - U-turn / Sucker Punch Decidueye-Hisui @ Leftovers Ability: Overgrow Tera Type: Steel / Water EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD Careful Nature - Swords Dance / Bulk Up - Knock Off / Sucker Punch - Triple Arrows - Trailblaze / Leaf Blade Decidueye-Hisui @ Heavy-Duty Boots Ability: Overgrow Tera Type: Steel / Water EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD Careful Nature - U-turn - Roost - Knock Off - Defog Tera Steel is a great tera, and will let H-Deci tank sludge bombs, psychics and dazzling gleams from gengar. tera water is an alternate option, letting it get a great neutral matchup to many types, and resisting fire. Comparison with Alolan Decidueye Alolan Decidueye has some notable advantages over its Hisuian Counterpart. Alolan has 2 immunities compared to Hisuian's 0. Alolan Deci can spinblock, has stab priority in shadow sneak, doesnt have a 4x weakness to flying, and has access to Spirit Shackle - a great signature move which can trap and dissasemble bulky or support-dependent teams. A-Deci's long reach means it doesnt have to worry about getting burnt or disabled randomly. A-Deci is faster than H-deci, which could be beneficial on some offensive sets Hisuian Decidueye however has a higher physical attack stat, a resistance to sucker punch instead of a weakness, higher HP and Physical Defence. Hisuian Decidueye with Tera Steel and min speed could act as a budget Corviknight, with Defog and Roost. Its slower u-turns could be beneficial. Scrappy can block intimidate and not get forced to switch as much. Grass/Fighting is a better offensive typing than Grass/Ghost i think both forms of Decidueye have their merits, but the Hisuian Form may be better suites for offense and defensive roles are better suited for the Alolan form. What are your thoughts in Hisuian Decidueye? submitted by Butters_Is_Grounded to stunfisk [link] [comments] |

2023.05.31 07:59 M7admit Hello everyone! Need a windows laptop for bschool (switching from a mac). I’ve narrowed it down to the HP Spectre 13.5 and the Dell XPS 13 9315 (not plus).
Specs for both: 12th Gen i7; 16GBRAM (Spectre has DDR4 whereas XPS offers DDR5); 512GB SSD - BOTH 2022 Models.
For the longest time, I believed Dell XPS to be a top dog. However, I had a horrible experience with a Dell Inspiron in 2017 (faulty motherboard, probably just a bad apple). Regardless, I looked forward to buying the XPS 13 - but everyone’s been telling me
Dell isn’t what it used to be and there have been serious quality control issues / heating issues / camera issues etc. with the XPS. Any thoughts?
I already have an iPad Pro so I am not in desperate need of a 2-in-1 laptop - neither is it a deciding factor. Would’ve loved if the Spectre came as a clamshell. Having said that, I don’t mind paying a few bucks extra for it, I’m sure it will be nice.
By process of elimination: Not a big fan of Lenovo. Used it through and through my 4 years in MBB, and it kept breaking down every 5 months (maybe I always got the used ones). Surface Pro is excellent, but the i7 spec I want it in is too expensive (touching $1500). Framework laptop has 0 to limited availability in my country. Leaves Dell and HP.

2023.05.31 06:05 _PO3 Tips and Tricks #4
Tip: Your hp is always more valuable than those of scavs. There are only 5 agents on the field max, while there can be hundreds of scavs sent. Thats why using 20 or so hp killing a baton scav or 40~ hp killing a winchester as well as unnecessarily exposing yourself to debuffs that can ruin runs is possible the worst thing you could do. This is why its vital to learn parrying and strafing. While strafing does require some luck, with parrying you can completely nullify one melee scav at a time, making looting as well as ration hunting much less costly. It is also important to note, most melee scavs will give you a window to do a full (NORMAL) heavy hit after being parried, but some regular scavs like pitchforks have a much longer stun duration that lets you get more hits in, and some scavs like sledgers and the occasional skinner have a shorter stun duration, only letting you get two (NORMAL) light hits in.
Trick: Skinners can only spawn out of pre last-strandeds melee scavs. Those include all combat knife, lead pipe, tomahawk, and spec(ialist knife) scavs. They must not have hair in order for skinner to spawn, and all 4 of those scavs only have light and heavy hit abilities as well as backstabs, no absolvers, grapples(sucks to sucks hidden eru), or dodges.

2023.05.31 05:10 Vingolio Day 1 Rain Balance Pokémon HOME
This is my Rain Balance team for Day 1 of the Pokémon HOME metagame. I have had some success with the team already, though I have only played up to 1400 MMR so far. Still the concept is simple and proven, so teams like this should have at least some relevance in the HOME metagame.
Paste
Pelipper sets rain and uses the occasional Hurricane. I am currently on low ladder, so even if an opponent has a switch in to Hurricane, you still use it a few times before you start clicking U-turn or Surf.
Floatzel was supposed to be a Basculegion before the council quick banned Last Respects. Without Last Respects, Floatzel is clearly still the better Pokémon. Tera Water Wave Crash is monstrous and closes games. You can ignore the EVs, they just speed creep Pokémon trying to speed creep Timid Regieleki and survive a few more priority moves from Breloom and Chien Pao, it's a pretty bad spread.
Clodsire checks most special threats including Magearna and Regieleki. Water Absorb is critical on this team or you have no switch ins to water type attacks. Spikes and Toxic chip away quickly at Great Tusk and Spikes at opposing Clodsire for Regieleki.
Magearna checks many physical threats but is here in particular for Chien Pao. It also switches in to Arcanine-H in the rain. With Clodsire it is the defensive backbone of your team.
Tornadus-T is the team's primary stall breaker. I could probably optimize the spread significantly. Tera Water Tera Blast is here because I miss Weather Ball. Heavy-Duty Boots is probably unnecessary, but it does mean that other than Pelipper, the team doesn't really mind Stealth Rock. Consider Life Orb as an alternative for more breaking power.
Regieleki is here to be silly. Funnily enough, I would love 1 extra move slot on this Pokémon for Electro Ball. I may drop Thunder for it eventually. Regieleki offers mediocre spin support, passable speed control and some potential to sweep. If I were more confident in the core or the metagame, I'd love to run Choice Specs on him.
Pelipper @ Damp Rock Ability: Drizzle Tera Type: Ground EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe Bold Nature - Hurricane - Roost - U-turn - Surf Floatzel @ Choice Band Ability: Swift Swim Tera Type: Water EVs: 252 Atk / 176 Def / 80 Spe Adamant Nature - Wave Crash - Aqua Jet - Ice Spinner - Low Kick Clodsire @ Black Sludge Ability: Water Absorb Tera Type: Dark EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe Careful Nature - Toxic - Spikes - Recover - Earthquake Magearna @ Leftovers Ability: Soul-Heart Tera Type: Fairy EVs: 248 HP / 224 Def / 36 Spe Bold Nature IVs: 0 Atk - Volt Switch - Fleur Cannon - Flash Cannon - Focus Blast Tornadus-Therian @ Heavy-Duty Boots Ability: Regenerator Tera Type: Water EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe Timid Nature IVs: 0 Atk - Hurricane - Nasty Plot - Focus Blast - Tera Blast Regieleki @ Heavy-Duty Boots Ability: Transistor Tera Type: Ice EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe Modest Nature - Rapid Spin - Thunder - Volt Switch - Tera Blast

2023.05.31 05:10 spacecake12 ECM Blower Motor Replacement Model
I have a ECM blower motor that my AC guy determines needs to be replaced. Local AC supply store wants $1300 for it but I found it online for a lot less.
For reference here are pics of my unit with the model number stickers on it:
https://imgur.com/a/XWJi9gZ The relevant model numbers I've determined are:
Both of these seem to have a ebay listing from North America HVAC with same spec/photo:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Carrier-Bryant-Payne-Furnace-Blower-Motor-3-4-HP-KMSAH012C03-/372358749729?_ul=IN My HVAC guy cautioned me from buying one online as he said since this is ECM motor the configuration can be programmed for each use case (i.e speed, torque, power output).
But if North America HVAC is advertising the exact same model number, I imagine I should be getting the same Broad-Ocean unit which should be programmed the same way? Or could it really be that the programming could be different?

| Torkoal is a sun setter, all moves are for utility H-Lilligant and WW are sun sweepers, tera fire lilligant is so it can deal with Gholdengo and Corviknight Great Tusk is for extra hazard removal (changed to Tera Steel because Eleki scares me) Hatterene and Skeledirge are for some added bulk, and dragons submitted by MysticJJustin to stunfisk [link] [comments] |
2023.05.31 02:23 collectorsphere Tools I use for Pre-Grading
Hi, I wrote this article to help out newer graders and to help discuss methods people use for Pre-grading cards. This is a long one and is very comprehensive, so thanks in advance for reading!
Full Article on my Blog:
https://collectorsphere.blogspot.com/2023/05/tools-i-use-for-grading.html Do I use any tools that can help cards have a better shot at grading a PSA 10? Where do I buy my supplies? If you need help grading with some best tips and tricks, I suggest this article. It may change the way you grade, so always be informed. You don't need to necessarily follow what I do word for word. This article is a guide that tells you
what tools I use for grading. Refer to this YouTube Video as well (I am a bit new to videos but this should be helpful):
Video Tools: I use a variety of tools for grading. Approximate cost for these can range depending on quality and brand.
Here is a comprehensive checklist:
- Lint Roller
- Why?
- To grade cards, you need to make sure you have a clean surface so that no dirty/lint/dust goes onto your card before and after you sleeve
- How?
- ALWAYS wash your hands with soap and water, then clean off your playmat or whatever surface you use to grade cards. Oil from your hands can be picked up by grading companies. You can simply use the lint roller to pick up any other dust or particles from your mat but rolling them on with a fresh layer of tape from the lint roller.
- Where?
- Playmat/Clean Surface
- Why?
- You should have a clean surface that soft to the touch in case your hands put any pressure onto your card. This will make it so your card doesn't scratch
- How?
- Simply lay down the playmat on a surface that's flat and away from any liquids/food or other things that can get in your way. I will only use the playmat for grading and then put it away after use.
- Where?
- Blacklight (Pen preferred)
- Why?
- A Blacklight will illuminate any white scratches/foil scratches from the surface of the card
- How?
- Turn on the blacklight and look at the card from variety of angers. Best to hold the card by the edges and not touch the surface. Examine the back and the front as well and take your time.
- Where?
- Magnifying Glass
- Why?
- Magnifying glass lets you see if there are any imperfections on your card, and whether or not dirt should be removed from the cards itself.
- How?
- Turn on your light and use the magnifying glass on the corners, edges, and surfaces of the back and front of the card. Edges is something to look at since edge wear and edge dings sometimes does not show up when you are looking purely at the front/back of the card; the sides/edges should be looked at as well.
- Bad edges can bring a card to a 9 automatically, same with surface and corners.
- Where?
- Ring Light
- Why?
- Ring lights give you differential views when looking at the surface of the card, especially on foiling/holographic areas of the card. They are especially bright as well and can latch onto a desk and not get in your way if you put it near the edge.
- How?
- Turn on the ring light and put your card under it, holding onto the edges of the card raw. You can examine the card for any surface scratching, holo scratching or any bends/tears. This will maximize the chance of getting a good grade the more you spot.
- Where?
- Soft Microfiber Cloth
- Why?
- Microfiber gets rid of most surface issues from the card and should be the first wave of defense when trying to get a notable surface issue off the card
- As a reminder, this WILL NOT get rid of holo scratches, print lines, or other print defects on the card. I will usually just binder a card with any of these imperfections and NOT submit them for grading.
- How?
- Use one finger and rub the surface of the card with the cloth. Sometimes you can clasp it with two fingers on both front and back of the card for more friction to remove the surface dirt.
- Where?
- Q-tip
- Why?
- Qtips, unlike a microfiber cloth, can target specific parts of the card where you see notable surface residue. Sometimes you will ask yourself, what is this? Why is this black smudge on the card. The worst think it can be is a print line or an actual print error, which WILL lower your chance of getting a PSA 10.
- Vintage cards will sometimes have "black spots" that can be gotten rid of with a semi-wet Qtip. This is caused by hand oils and lint/dust that can accrue onto a raw card during shuffling/play or simply being left out to the elements.
- As a reminder, this WILL NOT get rid of holo scratches, print lines, or other print defects on the card. I will usually just binder a card with any of these imperfections and NOT submit them for grading.
- How?
- I will usually wet the Qtip first, and then dry it slightly, so its not too wet. A semi-wet qtip always has a better chance of removing surface residue. LIGHTLY rub the part of the card that has a spot, and it should come right off if it is dirt. If it does not come off, I recommend not grading the card as PSA or any other grading company can ding the card's "Surface" score.
- Where?
- Penny Sleeves
- Why?
- These are soft sleeves that won't damage your card when you put the card in and when you pull the card out, this is very important
- Don't use hard sleeves (Dragon Shield, Katanas, Ultra Pro Hard Sleeves) for any grading. If you have a spec of dirt on the card or inside the sleeve, simply sliding in the card WILL damage the card's surface
- How?
- ALWAYS USE NEW SLEEVES: I cannot stress that enough. Don't use recycled sleeves for grading and don't use sleeves that have any bends in them
- Simply slip your raw card into the sleeve, then put the sleeve in your semi-rigid cardholder
- Where?
- eBay 500 Ct $7
- Brands: Ultra Pro, Cardboard Gold, pretty much any major card supply manufacturer will have their own penny sleeve, but generally get the better brands for more efficiency and also in bulk if you want to save money.
- Good to buy this in bulk for your next submission. Getting 1 pack individually will add up. Find a friend in the hobby and split them if you'd like as well
- Card Saver 1 Semi-rigid card holder
- Why?
- These are semi rigids trusted by PSA and even partnered with PSA
- This are different from top-loaders since semi-rigids keep the card in place. Usually for top-loaders, the card can move around a LOT. It will be bad if your card suddenly comes out during shipment to PSA or even inside your collection in general.
- You most likely won't grade your cards right away, having your cards in semi-rigids help it stay still when you aren't touching them. I normally have a stack, put them in a box, and then when I do decide to grade, pull them out and start the grading process.
- How?
- Open up the Semi-Rigid with your index finger, clench with your other hand, then slip your card (within the penny sleeve) within it, pushing until its all the way down. Do this lightly or else you may bend your card.
- Where?
- eBay 200 Ct $25
- Good to buy this in bulk for your next submission. Getting a 50 pack individually will add up. Find a friend in the hobby and split them if you'd like as well
- Post-it Stickies
- Why?
- This is optional
- This primarily helps with getting your card OUT of the semi-rigid. If you are indecisive like me, sometimes you will go like "I'm not going to submit this card anymore, going to submit other cards first" then you can take the card out easily without risk of damaging it
- How?
- Remove a single Post-it sticky from the case and place it on the back of your sleeved card
- Then put the entire thing into a semi-rigid
- Where?
- Centering Tool
- Why?
- This tool helps you look a the centering of your card and decide whether or not it is a good one to grade
- This is better than using your edges to look at the front, bottom, left and right sides of the card.
- How?
- Place your card into a penny sleeve first (to be safer)
- Put the centering tool on the card and make sure the top, bottom, left and right are in good positions. Bad Centering even on a minty card will bring the card to an 7-8-9 if the centering is bad so this definitely helps tremendously to get better chances of a 10
- PSA allows for centering to be 60-40 at worst for a 10, but I would still recommend this process, especially if you are grading with Beckett or CGC, where you'd strive for the 10 or Perfect grades.
- Where?
Grading can be an expensive hobby, but when done right, can increase the size and value of your collection. Grabbing these tools will definitely help you out in the long run after a one time cost of accruing these tools.

Happy Grading!
