I’m trying to add my course schedule from sio to my Apple calendar. I usually did this using the calendar export button when viewing my schedule on sio, but when I do it now I just get a page with a bunch of text like this:

2022.08.01 14:02 EtixP Paying with dollars from outside the U.S.
I'm an incoming international student at CMU. On the SIO website, flywire is the suggested method of international payment. But is it possible to directly send dollars to CMU bank account through account transfer? Or do I have to make a U.S. bank account and transfer money from the U.S. bank account? I'm worried that dollar value will increase more in the future so I'm trying to buy dollars now.

2022.01.13 22:43 moraceae CMU COVID TLDRs
Because CMU sends too many emails (would be nice if they coordinated between departments). Figured I'd summarize as I force myself to read through all of it.
TLDR of TLDR:
- Submit SIO survey asap, link
- Submit booster docs by Feb 16, link
- Take a baseline test when you're back in Pittsburgh and if you're negative you don't need to do anything, if you're positive go here
- Figure out what your course modalities on SIO. IPO/PEREO (if you're not IPO, Jan 18 to Jan 30 is remote)
- Wear a mask on campus
Edit:
- If you already caught COVID, you do not need to do a baseline test, but you must report your positive diagnosis
Do this:
- By ???, login to SIO and do the survey. Double-check that your "local residence address, permanent address, mobile phone, and emergency contact information" are correct. [0]
- Commentary: Historically, you get locked out of SIO eventually if you don't do their surveys.
- By Feb 16, upload your booster documentation to HealthConnect, click Submit Documentation Now. [1]
- You can register for boosters here.
- You can submit requests for vaccine exemption or vaccine booster exemption, but you'll need to do: daily self-assessment, weekly tartan testing, and of course wear a mask. If you fall into this category for some reason, read [1].
- Commentary: Pitt just dis-enrolled people who didn't do any of the above. I wonder if CMU will be as bold.
- After returning to Pittsburgh, take a baseline test. This can be done through Tartan Testing or an at-home test. [2]
- If your test is negative, you don't need to do anything.
- If your test is positive, follow these instructions.
- Edit: If you already caught COVID, you do not need to do a baseline test. But you must report your positive diagnosis. [2]
- Commentary: It appears there's nothing making you take a baseline test, but please take one anyway. If you check [3] the COVID Dashboard, CMU had an all-time high of cases last week, more than we've ever had. Image.
- mumble mumble what is the point of pushing back the semester start mumble lookit me I'm such a smart alumni yall are sheeps mumble
- More seriously, it does look like cases are flattening out quickly, so barring any people intentionally spreading COVID to prove a point and assuming that people are somewhat responsible, in-person in February without any significant fraction of the CMU population catching any form of COVID seems realistic.
Going forward, information courtesy of [0]:
- Jan 18 - 30 is remote unless your course is explicitly listed on SIO as IPO (In-Person Only). Afterwards,
- Go to SIO schedule for the current semester, click the (i) bubble for each course.
- IPE = In-Person Expectation = you should attend in-person by default.
- PER = in-Person-Expectation Rotation = (directly ripped from the advisors, thanks!) PER is IPE with "rotation", which means once we are back in person for most courses, you are expected to attend in person, but only a subset of the class will attend in person each day, and these subsets will rotate through required attendance in person; on days when you are not in person, the instructor will provide a recording or other material. (e.g. 1/2 the class might attend in person on Tuesday and 1/2 on Thursday if the course meets TR.) Your instructor will explain once we return to in-person instruction.
- REO = REmote-Only = this course will only be run remotely.
- Note that all remote sessions are expected to run synchronously by default (so you need to show up during class time).
AFAIK this is all you need to do and know. Corrections welcome.
Also, because current grocery store prices are wack, some financial resources for anyone that might need them (thanks to GSA for sending out great emails):
- TESF: "unforeseeable expenses related to the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. travel, moving expenses, medication, food requiring immediate assistance). Approved TESF support does not require repayment; however, students receiving these funds are responsible for any potential tax implications"
- CMU pantry: need-blind, and you can email them if you need any kind of help getting stuff (e.g., quarantined, ill).

2021.09.17 18:34 MawinoBoomerNo The CMU UI/UX design...
For a university that is rank no. 1 in computer science, most of the uni platforms have a very bad user interface. I will give an exception to Canvas CMU at least It is better than Moodle(I mean Moodle is actually not bad in terms of UX but UI no). The rest sites like HealthConnect, Shinsure, and SIO are designed poorly.

2021.08.06 18:33 Suspicious_Tart_ Confused PhD student- require some help with medical insurance stuff.
I'm an incoming PhD student and I'm trying to enroll for health insurance (SHIP) but I'm confused on how exactly this works.
My acceptance letter states that "if you elect to enroll in Carnegie Mellon University’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), the University will cover 50 percent of the premium cost for your individual coverage under SHIP."
I believe this is the standard deal. I have some questions about this:
- How do I enroll in the first place? Unless I'm wrong, I just go to SIO, click on the Highmark link and fill out the relevant info, correct?
- But at what point does CMU step in? Will they automatically start paying 50% of the premium or is there any forms I need to fill out or information I need to send to some department, etc?
- Does this include dental and vision insurance as well, or is that separate and entirely on me?
It would be nice to just have a general outline of what steps I have to take lol I'm very confused and overwhelmed by all of this stuff.
Thank you for your help.

2021.07.29 01:29 crvc General info about waitlists
Since I see some posts here about waitlists I will give you my brain dump / rant as an undergrad (Statistics & Machine Learning) and now grad student (ML which is in SCS).
My experience is that waitlists are pretty much unavoidable for most popular classes if it's not required for your major. I never had issues getting into my major required stats courses (though for courses where there is more than one option for the major, one of them may be waitlisted), but even popular courses not required by my major like 213 or undergrad math courses (for an additional major or minor) I had to sit on waitlists. For how inter-disciplinary CMU claims to be, it's still not easy to take classes outside your major and I always sorta felt like they gave CS students more attention than other schools. Every semester for undergrad I had waitlists and only my second semester of grad was the first time I never had to be on a waitlist. Some classes have waitlists from the very beginning but that is because the administrators put everyone on waitlists then add people by priority (required for degree comes first, then within that who is graduating soon gets priority, etc) so it doesn't matter what day/time you get register. This is actually a more fair system than the seniority system but it can be misleading.
Email your advisor and professors about the chances you will get in because they know a lot more of what's going on than what SIO reports. You can try emailing professors but some of them have no idea how hard it is to register for classes because they're not involved with registration. Also by asking your advisor they can help get more sections for next semester and help you plan.
Sometimes if you are close to the start of the semester or a week into the course and the waitlist isn't budging you'll just have to drop the course. However since there is a grace period (2 weeks I think) for dropping courses, a lot of people will over-register for courses they are not very invested in taking and drop out of courses in the first two weeks, so you have to monitor the SIO listings carefully. When I took 213 the waitlist significantly reduced from 100 to 20 people after the first week which meant I got in. The voucher system was introduced to discourage people from over-registering and then failing their classes and having to drop, but people still do it anyway (the flip side is that if someone is really struggling, you don't want them to press on in a hopeless class).

2021.06.16 18:56 the-true-logistican Up to 1,000 blue (processing unit) from 1-6 express green (electronic circuit)
| Last version worked fine, but had a big disadvantage. The solution was unable to compensate for disruptions well and then sometimes fell into a deadlock. I.e. this design was not robust. This is now a flexible solution. On input side you can bring in 1 to 6 belts with green circuids. And change it at any time. 2018.05.22 01:53 Yomafacio Incoming freshman course selection questions
Sorry if this is has been asked before (couldn't find any threads that directly answered) but how exactly does the course selection work for incoming freshmen? I got access to the SIO, so should I start a schedule and start finding classes? Or am I suppose to contact my academic adviser first? In that case, I don't have an academic adviser under important contacts in the SIO, so how do I reach out to one? Or will CMU send me more stuff through email/snail mail later in the summer that will guide me through course selection?
Again, sorry for rambling, but I'm just confused as to where to start from and what I need to do regarding courses.
Edit: Thanks for all the feedback! I guess I'm just overly paranoid about all of this. BTW I'm planning on majoring in ECE, if that helps.

2018.05.16 17:31 awesome2000- Transferring Dual-Enrollment Credits
Hello, I'm about to begin my freshman year at CMU this fall as a prospective ECE major.
I was wondering how transfer credits from dual-enrollment at high school would work. I took Calc III at a local university, and I'm interested in using that credit for 21-259 (Calculus in Three Dimensions). I looked at the class descriptions, and it seems to match what I did in the class I already took. I already have AP Calc BC credits, if that matters.
I just got access to the SIO, but I don't know who to contact exactly. If any of you guys have any pointers, that'd be great!
Thanks!

2017.11.22 08:54 xapon Thoughts on Silicon Valley campus
Hi!
I'm a grad ECE student in MS SE program in Silicon Valley. While reading this sub and other internet resources in general, I noticed there's little to no discussion involving our campus. Studying here, I've always been wondering how the life goes on in Pittsburgh and how the education process there compares to ours, especially because I'm an international student and I didn't have experience of studying in US school before.
I understand our campus is small (about 300 students), that's why it doesn't get much attention - and it was somehow disappointing to me (and to other students I know). Even in Bay area, almost no one knows about CMU SV; when hearing CMU, people just assume Pittsburgh - and I've never even been there.
I don't feel quite connected to main campus here; one of the "proofs" of our connection I observe are INI students from bicoastal program who spend their second year in SV. From what I've seen, these students are generally stronger than those studying solely in SV, so I have this unpleasant feeling that our campus is somewhat.. second-class, not just in terms of size, but quality.
Some courses here are broadcasted from Pittsburgh; for example, I'm taking now 18-600 (csapp). But the majority of software courses provided on campus are less interesting than those available in Pittsburgh (from what I can see in SIO and ECE course catalog). I know software engineering is not a primary field for ECE, but still, the range of courses here is poor.
Can't say I'm totally unhappy with studying here though. There's one cool professor Bob Iannucci whose course on embedded systems (not my area of expertise) I took accidentally, which turned out to be the most interesting one. But besides him, I can't name many other professors that impressed me. I also like prof Kesden (who teaches 18-600), but he is in Pittsburgh.
So I'd like to know what students in Pittsburgh think of our campus (or if they even know about it), and whether the level of education quality is comparable. Maybe anyone has experience on changing campuses or is an INI bicoastal student who can compare their experience?
