2023.06.02 20:26 AVAfandom Nassau to Exuma day trip - powerboat or plane? Which is better?

Needing a local or frequent Bahamas visitor to help me out with advice! I'm visiting Nassau this summer and have been looking around at the various half and full day trips. I'm not particular on what I "have" to see and do, this is more about relaxing - I've seen some that are nearby Rose Island and feeding the pigs (though apparently this isn't the "real pig area") vs visiting Exuma for one full day.
My main concern with Exuma is it's quite far and I see that there's the option of a speedboat vs prop plane. It seems like you can fit in more in less time with the plane option. I am traveling with a group that includes 3 kids. Has anyone done the powerboat option? Is it super fast to the point where it's uncomfortable? I can't imagine trekking out on a boat for 2.5 hours, a lot of reviews have said they wish they had flown. It seems like you are in the boat getting there way more hours than you are out of the boat exploring? The other concern is seasickness as some in our party get seasick at choppy water. I guess I'm looking for anyone who has done this Powerboat/explore Exuma trip and back, and asking how it was (apart from the bright shiny marketing and ads!). I wouldn't mind doing the plane version either, as I believe it takes you to the same locations (pigs, iguanas, downed plane, sand bar, sharks), it's just a little more expensive but more comfortable plus I think it would be cool to see the islands from above right? Has anyone done that and can offer insight? It looks like Bahamas Air Tours is the most popular one for that.
If we decide to skip Exuma altogether I suppose we could do Rose Island or the tours that take you around Nassau on golf carts for a day. Would it be easier to just do Rose Island which is close, and fit in as much as I can close-ish to Baha Mar (I'm sure I can see wildlife and snorkel close by). It's all my family's first time visiting the Bahamas. I really want to see a lot but I don't want to be completely sunburned and exhausted and seasick by a one day adventure if that makes sense.

2023.06.02 01:28 Rocket-Jock Golf Cart Rental?

I have my mother-in-law visiting next month. Her mobility is a little poor, so I'm looking to rent a good cart, to carry her to and from the lake. Any one have any experience or suggestions? I know there are plenty of places in South Haven, but I'm looking here in Kalamazoo.

2023.06.01 03:55 nicoleecat Jenelle's Malingering Timeline Part 3 - 2022 to Present

Alright y'all... here's the final piece. It's 15 Google Docs pages, so it's a long one. If you don't want to read and are wondering what the takeaway is, it's this: Jenelle has so many different health "issues" that have popped up and disappeared over the last 10+ years, received diagnoses for some, has had tests done for most, and has ultimately ignored all of it. Sometimes she focuses on her esophagus. Sometimes it's her neck cracking. Sometimes it's her lungs. Sometimes it's her bloodwork. Sometimes it's her hemangiomas. Nowhere in any of the testing, medications, unofficial or official diagnoses is there a solution she's happy with. It never ends, and it never will. I'll eat a very tall sandwich if she ever announces (another) official diagnosis that explains all of her ailments (not necessarily one blanket one) and demonstrates treatment or lifestyle changes that she's making to try to make herself feel better.

January 2022 - Posts a TikTok video saying she’s been taking things easy lately and has lost her spark and motivation because of her health issues. She says, “I’ve recently been diagnosed with two tumors in my spine, and they recently found out that I also have a tumor in my neck, which hurts pretty bad. We don’t know what we’re doing about this yet, but I’ve just been in a lot of pain lately. My neck is just killing me.” She hashtags the video "syringomyelia," "hemangioma," and "spinetumor." In another video, she says these tumors are different than the cysts she’s previously mentioned and lists out what she has: cysts in her spine and head, two small tumors on her vertebrae and “thoratic” spine, another tumor at C3 in her neck, called hemangiomas. More on that in a bit.
January 2, 2022 - Posts a TikTok response to a comment that said, “I have a cyst on my brain. Actually, a lot of people do. They call them ‘don’t bother me cysts’ because they are so common. Your absolutely fine.” Sarcastically, Jenelle says, “You know what you’re so right; it doesn’t cause any issues until you go paralyzed or can’t hold your bowels anymore or have left arm weakness like I do, or have a nerve study done and show left side weakness in your body.” She says we shouldn’t compare whos worse and that it’s not a competition, and wants to clarify that she has cysts and tumors. She says cysts elsewhere aren’t a big issue, but they are when they’re on your spine. “Just use Google.” She points out that the video is shaking and says it’s because of weakness in her hands. She says the commenter is right that they won’t do anything about it until the symptoms get worse.
Posts another response to a different comment that says, “I know it’s been a long road to this discovery. Can you share with us the journey such as exams they had to conduct to find these tumors?” Jenelle says every time you get an MRI/CT scan done, you should ask for the image disk and bring it with you to every doctor you go to, as long as it has a diagnosis. She shows a picture of her “thoratic” spine and points out two little tumors and a cyst. She shows the MRI of her sinuses and shows us that cyst. She says she got another MRI that she doesn’t have the image disk for, but it showed she had another hemangioma.
January 5, 2022 - Posts a TikTok with someone else’s audio that says, “how do you know you can’t OD on cannabis? Because I try! I try every fucking day Barbara.” It could be argued she only posted this because her mom’s name is Barbara, but her cannabis addiction is well documented.
January 6, 2022 - Posts a dancing TikTok and a commenter says, “That’s good for the back.” She responds, “Staying positive and dancing until I can’t anymore.”
January 8, 2022 - Says in a TikTok comment that she was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and just has anxiety.
January 12, 2022 - Posts a TikTok with the caption “When your husband asks if he got you sick,” and the audio says, “Umm… yeah.”
Random thoughts YT January 2022 - talks about her implants and says, “They say to get them redone every 10 years, but I don’t have any problems right now.” She says she asked 2 different doctors, and both told her that she has so many other health issues that they don’t think she has BII and aren’t concerned about it.
January 2022 - Seventh video, with footage starting in October and going through January. It’s been six months since she found out about the cyst. Her back hurts really bad, yet still went on a fair ride (which made her nauseous, despite her “never” having motion sickness before). She has nerve pain in her shoulders, back, and ribs. Headache, neck cracking, ear popping, feels like she can’t breathe. She Googled what she shouldn’t be doing: no trampolines, no scuba diving (“which I’m certified in scuba diving, so that really sucks”), and no roller coaster riding. So. ENT said to see the neurologist again; the neurologist suggests seeing a new ENT. The neurologist assumes the neck cracking isn’t caused by the cyst. Goes back to the neurosurgeon - they’re going to repeat the MRI and look for any changes. The results show it’s getting longer but is the same width. Mentions her heat issues again; she’s getting red patches on her chest and breaking out and itching when she’s in the sun. She says she’s getting neck tightness, extreme pressure headaches, and blood pressure rising when she stands up and sits down. The doctor suggests an MRI of her neck. Now claims arm & fingertip numbness. Refers to her cysts as tumors, benign vertebrae tumors, and hemangiomas. The neurosurgeon suggests pain management, but she wants to try herbal remedies and some fruit that cures cancer. The neurosurgeon says the hemangioma is fine and that her neck is normal. Jenelle suggests she may have thoracic outlet syndrome. She thought her neck was cracking due to the hemangioma, but the doctor tells her that wouldn’t cause the neck cracking. She has an EMG scheduled and will get a blood study done to detect her blood circulation.
February 2, 2022 - Posts a negative review for another doctor on Facebook. She says she was told by the PA to “go to the ER if you become paralyzed or lose bowel movements due to the cyst in your spine.” She was referred elsewhere for TOS syndrome (thoracic outlet syndrome). She says she’s been crying for months about her problems, and the practice didn’t care to look into it further when her problems are “very apparent” on her MRIs. She doesn’t recommend this office and ends the review with, “Not to mention my cyst in my spine is growing in length 1mm per month.”
This same day, someone comments on a TikTok video asking how her back is doing. She responds by saying, “Lots of pain, and my neck always cracks but waiting on second opinions.”
February 8, 2022 - Posts a TikTok with the caption “Nerve Study Day” with star emojis. She starts her voiceover by saying, “Time for another dottor’s appointment.” She explains the nerve study tests her nerve impulses with shocks and acupuncture pokes. She says, “Don’t worry, I wore a mask, I was sick.” She says she felt like shit after and took a bath and then laid down after because she had a bad headache. She had to help Kaiser with homework, though, because being a mom doesn’t stop. Ate dinner but still didn’t feel well, so she went to sleep.
February 2022 - Eighth video. Got a new opinion from a new neurologist who sent her for another MRI and a nerve study. Claims her symptoms have gotten worse. Says her cervical MRI was at C3, C5, C6, & C7. She has a hemangioma in her neck, degenerative disc disease, and a disc bulge. The thoracic MRI showed T7, T8, & T9 - has a syrinx & hemangiomas there. And the cyst in her sinus. Says her thumb on her left side is losing grip, and her arm doesn’t feel like it’s attached to her body. Her brain pain has been getting worse and worse. Claims the new doctor says it’s weird no one is doing anything. She looked at her CT myelogram scan from 2021 and says spondylosis is her new diagnosis and that the neurologist didn’t tell her about it. Her neck has been cracking even louder - she’s being referred to another neurosurgeon for her spine cyst. She’s going to have her lungs checked for more cysts. After the nerve study, says she has problems at C6 in her spine and is waiting for the neurologist to look at the results. She has had nerve pain in her arm and back since the study, as well as double vision.
February 20, 2022 - Posts a TikTok about her health and mentions she will get checked for ALS and has been crying a lot. She’s getting all of her tests redone and her nerve study redone. She says she’s having trouble breathing, and since she has cysts “popping up everywhere,” they want to check to see if they’re also on her lungs. She hashtags the video “ALSAwareness” and “PrayersNeeded.” Responding to comments, she says, “Yeah, I asked my doc about MS, and she said nope, I don’t have that based on my brain MRI” and “I wish I did have MS and not ALS… but she said she looked at my brain MRI and there were no lesions.” Someone comments that the shaky hands and poor thumb grip could be caused by phone use and gaming controllers, but Jenelle says, “No… I’ve had a nerve study to prove weakness. I am having atrophy in my thumb. My thumb is losing muscle.”
February 23, 2022 - Posts an Instagram story selfie from a doctor’s office captioned “Good news but bad news… blood work is normal”
February 24, 2022 - Posts a TikTok captioned “freaking out on the inside” and “Life tough at the moment :( #NerveStudy.” She says she had to get another nerve study done because the other person who did it wasn’t her doctor’s office. She shows us her medical shorts and her laughing at herself but says she was “tearing up.” She says the electricity part was good but waited on needles. She shows us the equipment they used. Then she shows us herself crying when she got home because she had such bad nerve pain and then went to bed. A comment asks what she takes for the nerve pain, and she says, “Hot baths.” Another asks if she has fibromyalgia, and she says, “Nope.”
March 6, 2022 - Asked in the comments on a TikTok video how she’s been feeling and when she’s going to the doctor again. She responds, “Thanks for asking! Have a lot of double vision, neck pain, and headaches everyday.. Going this week for my check up.”
March 10, 2022 - Posts on Instagram that she has a diagnosis. The next day she sold the story to E! News and said she was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. From the article: “For as long as I can remember, I would get extremely bad tension headaches and full body aches - like I had the flu, but was not sick. My entire body gets in so much pain, and sometimes I lay in bed and cry.” She says, “Living life every day is challenging because of having only a little bit of energy to be able to get my work done and then having to go to bed early due to headaches or body aches.” She claims to be changing her diet to manage her symptoms.
March 11, 2022 - Posts an Instagram story that says, “I’m still so sad. Even tho I have a diagnosis… still doesn’t explain my neck cracking, double vision, and throat pain. I feel so hopeless. Something is def wrong with my neck, and it’s severely tight 24/7.”
March 12, 2022 - Posts a TikTok captioned “Hiii #LungCheckup #HealthUpdate #fibromyalgia.” She says she hasn’t been feeling good and took a break from TikTok for a few days. She shares her diagnosis and says she told her neurologist a few months ago that she couldn’t breathe, so she had a checkup with a lung doctor. They did a FeNO test on her, and her score was abnormally low, like “way too low.” She exclaims it measures the nitric oxide that you exhale on your breath. She’s now been prescribed an inhaler, nitroglycerin for her esophagus spasms, and a full lung checkup. She was going to skip her lung appointment, but good thing she didn’t! A quick Google search tells us that a high FeNO score is when you should be concerned.
March 13, 2022 - Posts a TikTok showing off weed merch someone sent her. In the comments, someone asks, “But do you think smoking is contributing to your lung problems? Hope you get answers soon!” Jenelle responds and says, “.....yeah I know :( but thank you.”

March 16, 2022 - She posts a video captioned “Peak Flow Meter - Lung Reading” and starts it off by saying, “This is your sign to get your lungs checked.” She said she just woke up and has been told to keep a diary of how her lung function is and is going to see how good it is based on her age and height. She blows into the device for about a second and coughs afterward, gasping for breath. She shows us her level is at 410, and for her height and age, it should be at 475. She says she has the lungs of a 70-year-old. She’s going to continue to do readings 3 times a day and report back to her lung doctor. In the comments, she mentions her average is 400. There are multiple comments telling her the correct way to administer this test and that she’s doing it wrong.
She posts a second video responding to a comment telling her to stand up straight, take a big deep breath and blow out as fast and hard as she can. She does it three times and shows it’s 410 each time. Someone comments, asking if she’s sure it’s not stuck, and asks if she quit smoking. She responds, “I’m going to try breathing exercises.”

You went from uncontrollable neck pain to this in no time at all.” Jenelle says she’s not going to be the most depressed bitch on this app every single day and is going to show us good and bad days. She says some people are in pain more than others. She says she’s been up since 1 in the morning because of her esophageal spasms, feeling like she has a heart attack. She’s not going to film herself every single time she feels like shit. There’s no treatment plan because they don’t know what’s going on. The only treatment plan she has is for her esophagus. She’s going to dance until she can’t no more.
March 26, 2022 - Makes a video with the caption, “I’ll give y’all more of an update soon. If you see bruises on my arms… you know why #myastheniagravis.” She’s crying and breathing heavily and captions herself saying her chest hurts. The text on the video says, “2 months ago: can’t breathe when waking up.” A clip of her in the bath says, “Tried to relax and rest since this began.” Posts a clip of herself in the ER that says, “2 days ago: hospitalized for extreme chest pain and difficulty breathing” and shows off her IV and pulls down her gown to show the monitors taped to her chest. The first clip is taken at 3:05 PM, and the second is taken at 3:49 PM. This one says, “Recently had 2 antibodies related to Myasthenia Gravis show up on blood tests.” Another says, “Had 2 EKGs, they stuck me 4 times for blood, stuck me 2 more for IVs, chest x-ray, CT scan,” and shows off all of her taped IV/blood draw locations. She posts another clip in the hallway outside of the x-ray room that says, “My blood clotting test came back high, but they said images looked ok.” We got a full picture of her IV in her arm that says, “resting for now but following up with neurologist ASAP”

April 3, 2022 - Posts on her (shortly thereafter) defunct blog that she’s switching to wine from beer. She says, “With all my health issues happening my stomach and esophagus have not been agreeing with me. Since possibly having Myasthenia Gravis, there’s a huge diet and foods to avoid that can trigger GI symptoms and/or problems.” She claims that “Since switching to wine, my stomach has been a lot calmer, and my burping also has decreased significantly! Super happy I’m making healthier choices for myself.”

She says she needs an MRI check up to see how long it’s gotten. She clarified that she said she could go paralyzed any day now. “If I go paralyzed or lose any bowel movements without trying, then I have to immediately go to the hospital and get emergency surgery. So yeah, really, I’m like a ticking time bomb over here, just waiting to give up, I guess you can say. So next week, I’ll be going to see my new neuromuscular doctor. Still have a lot more genetic testing to do and blood work, so we’ll see what’s going on, but they’re thinking an autoimmune disease.” She hashtags it “syringomyelia” and “syringomyeliaawareness.” She also clarifies that she’s leaving health content on the back burner until she has answers.
June 7, 2022 - Posts a video once again showing her scans of her spine and sinuses. She hashtags this one “syringomyelia,” “sphiehemangioma,” and “sinuscyst.”

In the Youtube vlog she posts, she explains she’s wearing a portable fan around her neck to help cool her down since her various illnesses make her sweat/hot. In the airport, she mentions she’s relieved that she’s “so far not sick,” or in other words, not experiencing esophagus spasms. Once they land, she tells us she didn’t get sick on the flight.
June 26, 2022 - Posts a TikTok explaining the wearable fan more. She says she’s been having an overheating issue and that her face has been red, so if she looks burnt, she isn’t. Nevermind the fact that she posted pictures of herself extremely burnt from their vacation.

August 10, 2022 - Posts a health update to TikTok. She reminds us she went to the ER in March and that while she was there, she had a high D Dimer test. The text on the screen says, “also had abnormal ECG in ER, sinus brachycardia (sic), & sinus arrhythmia.” She explains D Dimer tests are for blood clots or heart disease. They saw she didn’t have a blood clot and that her “lungs were fine” but told her to follow up with her doctor. She says the chest pain has been on and off for the last 3 months so she’s been ignoring it. She finally got ahold of her primary care doctor, who told her the chest pain is still happening, told her about the test results, and got a referral to a cardiologist. She shows us the heart monitor she has to wear for the next 48 hours (her exact words are, “so now, I’m on a chest monitor for the next 48 hours”) and says she has a heart ultrasound tomorrow and a stress test in September.

October 19, 2022 - Posts a TikTok about getting mono in middle school. She explains her throat was so swollen and inflamed that she went to the hospital and was admitted. She had IV steroids. Said her body “could not handle” mono and that she was severely sick. She says mono is REALLY severe and that it is the Epstein-Barr virus. She’s “stitching” someone else’s video and references it when she says that E-B can cause so many other diseases when you’re older without you realizing it. There are 3 blood tests that can see if you actively have E-B. Jenelle says it’s crazy to think it can cause all these health issues. She says she can’t breathe and has bad mucus problems lately in the morning. She’s on an inhaler and seeing her lung doctor. They’re going to do a “bronoscopy” and she’s really scared. She tells people she thinks all of her health issues are from E-B. She must’ve forgotten she already explored this avenue in March. And in August of 2021.
October 26, 2022 - Posts a TikTok that says, “My stomach feeling great… but then… *warning triangle emoji* Esophagus Spams *warning triangle emoji*” and the video of her like errors out? There’s speculation this fight was drug related. In her TikTok defending their argument, her pupils are huge. They’re at the mountains with the kids when all of this is going on. Treatment is antibiotics for three months, then retesting her antibodies. She calls methylene blue her other medicine/treatment and says it’s an antioxidant if you use a little and if you use a lot it’s anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and boosts serotonin and dopamine. She’s also using a redlight watch that is supposed to kill the bacteria in her veins once the dye is in her system. She claims in the comments this was all prescribed by her doctor.
That same day she posts another TikTok where she says she’s been seeing a functional medicine doctor out of Nashville that she found on YouTube. She had one video call visit and said the doctor sent one test to LabCorp and found her diagnosis. She was diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia, as mentioned in the previous video, and neutrophilic asthma. He’s who prescribed the methylene blue and wants her to use it with a nebulizer. She says she’s done a lot of research on it and that it has more pros than cons and seems very beneficial. She says she has shortness of breath but is hoping the combination of antibiotics, methylene blue, and redlight therapy will help her feel better in the long run. She shows us her order, which is now a Trenta iced coffee with no classic syrup, hazelnut syrup, ½ sweet cream, and vanilla sweet cream foam topping. Someone in the comments points out that a doctor on TikTok said those injections are just to make money, and she responded, “well, my vitamin B12 and D is low, and my ANA is positive, which means now I go to see a rheumatologist.”

She’s definitely posted videos and pictures of herself with weed vape pens and has been a known weed smoker for over 10 years, as well as smoking cigarettes throughout the years and smoking heroin out of wooden pipes, which she had addressed by a doctor in 2012. 2023.05.31 15:40 SC-Coqui My Culebra and Ceiba Ferry Experience

We went to Culebra yesterday out of Ceiba on the 9:30 AM passenger ferry.
We arrived about 7:30 AM. We really didn’t need need to be there that early. As long as you have tickets, you can easily plan to arrive 1 hour before departure and be perfectly fine.
Parking ended up being $20. I saw someone posting it was $10. My husband dropped us off at the terminal and parked. He opted to walk from the parking lot instead of waiting for the shuttle. There’s a nicely lit pedestrian walkway along the side of the road and it takes less than 10 minutes to the ferry. We walked it back on our return during the evening.
We rode the passenger ferry in and the cargo ferry back. No amount of dramamine would have alleviated my motion sickness. The passenger ferry is a catamaran style ferry and lifts and rocks pulling you up and out of your seat. I also have a queasy stomach and don’t do well on amusement park rides but there were many green and pale faces besides mine. If you do ride that ferry get all the way in the back. It’s less rough. The ride was a little under an hour.
The ride back on the cargo ferry was much smoother. It’s your typical car holding ferry - slow and heavy. It took exactly an hour and a half. We calculated that it runs about 15 mph. I had no issues with motion sickness and was able to go outside and enjoy the beautiful view as we docked back in Ceiba.
We rented a golf cart and went to Flamenco Beach and drove around and got lunch before returning for the 5:30 ferry. Seems that many places are closed on Tuesday. I knew many were closed Mondays, but didn’t expect Tuesday as well. We had an amazing meal at a restaurant called Dinghy Docks just south of the ferry launch area.
You need to pay to get into Flamenco beach and they have umbrella and chair rentals. The beach is beautiful.
Next time we go we’re going for an overnight trip. There’s plenty to see and do to fill up two days. We’ll definitely stick to the cargo ferry and would rent from the same UTV place for the Golf Cart - Culebra UTV.
Other ferry notes: When leaving from Ceiba: Pay attention to when they call pre-boarding for your ferry. We say a few people miss their ferry because they spazzed out, or were waiting for someone else and they shut down boarding. When it’s closed, it’s closed and they won’t open even if it’s still a few minutes until launch.
Buy tickets ahead of time. You can go to puertoricoferry.com and follow the information. I did see some people go “stand by” and were able to get on once all passengers with reservations got on. There were a lot of empty seats on both ferries even though they were sold out. Probably has to do with passenger capacity.
Overall would do it again. I know it’s a long post. If you have questions or additional tips please post!

2023.05.30 15:05 GreatCambin0 Getting around KW with Pregnant Wife

Hey everyone, my wife and I are heading down to Key West staying near the southernmost point. I have a pregnant wife who is nearing the end of her second trimester, so some tasks are becoming more difficult. We are worried about walking and/or riding bikes being to hot/exhausting for her, so were thinking of getting a golf cart. The golf cart rental seems to be a problem with parking especially overnight based on what I am now reading online. We are totally walking/riding bikes people but in this case I was hoping for a little extra help. I also thought maybe a rental car would be the same if not cheaper than a golf cart and offer AC.
Any getting around suggestions for a prego?

2023.05.30 07:40 Bright-Ad-858 General Questions before Booking First Time Cruise / Crown Princess

My boyfriend and I, both of us who are in our mid 20s, are debating whether or not to go on a 5 night cruise on the Crown Princess leaving from San Francisco a couple days before Thanksgiving, stopping at San Diego and Ensenada.
This would be the first cruise for both of us. The big appeal with this particular one is that:
A) it’s during Thanksgiving week, a time that we both already have off work
B) it disembarks from our home city, so we don’t have to fly somewhere to board (saving time and $). I think only Carnival and Princess disembark from SF, so not a ton of options cruise wise with that.
That being said, I still have some hesitations before booking based on reading reviews / Reddit and would love to hear if these are fair concerns.
•Crown Princess ship: I’ve read it’s one of the older ships/has some problems.
•Age/Activities: I’ve read that Princess Cruises is mostly 50s + couples. Since this is a cruise at Thanksgiving, do you think there would be more variety in age? I don’t mind being one of the younger passengers, my concern here more are the activities onboard and if enough would be interesting to us. My boyfriend and I are very much in-bed-by-11-pm people who don’t party or go out. That being said, we’re fairly active (my boyfriend especially). I’m not much of a shopper or gambler; I’m more interested in things like pool time, shows, and mini golf (can anyone confirm if the latter is on the Crown Princess? Couldn’t find this anywhere). Do you think I’d find enough to do on board without spending additional $?
•Pricing/Wi-Fi: We would book the most basic package since we aren’t big drinkers by any means, but I’m concerned that we wouldn’t have any Wi-Fi. Is Wi-Fi something you can pay for a la carte onboard or do you have to buy Princess Plus or Premier to have access to it?
•Meals: Not sure if this is standard with cruise ships, but I saw in one review that at all included meals you are seated with other people. Is this accurate? If so, is this standard across all cruise lines? Can you ever go eat food somewhere else with just your S.O.?
Apologies for the lengthy post and super appreciate any feedback!!

2023.05.29 19:41 RaynaClay The Last Resort: A Small Leak

Hello all. I have written here before about my job at Ultima Resort (1,2,3,4,5,6,7), though I know it has been a while, sorry about that. We were trapped for some time, my phone died pretty quickly, and I wasn’t able to recharge it again until the water receded. So, I haven’t really been able to write. But I am getting ahead of myself. Let me get you up to date, then it will all make more sense.
I opened a door and peered into the closet, but the noise was quieter here, if anything. I shut the closet and continued down the hallway. The dripping had started out intermittent. The gentle plip, plip, plip was barely audible over the normal sounds of the hotel, and we had assumed it was related to the steady rain that had been drumming on the building for a few days, at that point. But the frequency of the dripping had been increasing steadily, and now was concerningly loud and constant. It was somehow audible from every corner of the hotel, and it was only a matter of time until the guests complained. They were already irritable because of the bad weather, which had kept them stuck indoors. As I passed a window, a flash of lightning lit the forest behind the hotel. The lights flickered ominously but it stayed on. The clap of thunder rattled the doors in their frames. I spotted Vincent hurrying towards me from down the hall. His face seemed pale.
“Well, did you find the leak?” I asked.
“Umm… you could say that,” he replied, uncomfortably, eyes shifting to the storm outside.
“What’s wrong?”
“It… well, you should just come see.”
I followed him down the hall to the ballroom where we had hosted the anniversary party some days back. It had been a nice event. Less deaths than I had expected. The hors d’oeuvres were pretty good. There was still a bit of smoke damage on the west wall, but we had cleaned it off as best as we could and the place looked presentable again, though I was now thinking we should put on a new coat of paint. It was hard to decide, when I wasn’t sure if the room would even be here next week. Vincent opened the door on the back wall and gestured me inside. This was new.
It was some sort of small storage cupboard, with dim lighting and a low ceiling. It was full of what looked like furniture, draped in white cloths for storage. I wondered what the furniture was made of, because the room had a strange fetid odor, that reminded me of rot and death. I covered my nose with my hand instinctively, but it did little to help. The small window in the back showed that the rain continued to fall outside, but it didn’t seem to be the source of the leak, as the floor around it was dry. Still, the leak must be in here, because the sound was louder than ever. I took a step forward, to get a better look at the room, but Vincent grabbed my arm and pulled me back, pointing towards the ceiling. I looked up to see a large dome light. It had a strange dark tint, and hardly any light made it through. But something else was coming from the dome. Drips fell in a steady rhythm, and as my eyes tracked them, I saw them splash into a widening puddle on the ground. The puddle was viscous and black, glimmering in the dim light. I looked back at Vincent.
“What is that?” I raised an eyebrow. “It doesn’t really look like ordinary water to me.”
“I don’t know. Maybe… it is picking something up as it drips through from the roof?” he did not sound particularly convincing.
“Maybe,” I tried to play along. “Though, I am not sure I want to know what that could be. Did you check if it is coming from somewhere upstairs?”
“Yeah. Nothing out of the ordinary on the floor above, and I can’t find any signs of a leak anywhere else.”
“Alright,” I backed out of the door and closed it behind us. “Well, I am sure whatever that is will work itself out.”
“What? We’re just going to leave it? Why did we even bother looking, then?” Vincent protested.
“I was worried it was a roof leak, something we needed to handle with routine maintenance. That does not seem to be the case,” I raised a questioning eyebrow. “Do you know how to fix whatever is going on in there?”
“No…”
“Me neither. In this place, when the ceiling is dripping black ichor, it is probably for a reason. I assume we’ll find out when one of our guests gets involved.”
Vincent opened his mouth, as if to protest, but even as he did, the sound of the phone at the desk echoed through the hotel. Vincent sighed,
“Alright, let’s go see what fresh hell awaits us today.”
I heard a small chuckle inside my head. I resisted the urge to ask Al what he knew. He answers were rarely helpful. He didn’t seem to lie, but he was often intentionally misleading, saying whatever he thought would elicit the most drama. I was tired of giving him the satisfaction. I was sure I could sense his disappointment when I refused to engage, but maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part. I couldn’t blame Vincent for being apprehensive about what the guests’ inquiry might be. The three men had arrived to participate in some sort of golf event, but they been here for 3 days now and since it had poured every moment, the event was not taking place. The guests were very unhappy about this turn of events, and they had mostly been killing time by taking it out on us. That wasn’t exactly a surprise. The rich ones were always the most demanding, unused to being told ‘no’ even when the question was ‘has the rain stopped yet?’, and based on the Bugatti they had arrived in, these men were quite rich. I answered the phone on the desk, already suppressing a sigh.
“Ultima Resort, front desk, how can I help you?”
“You can come and open the bar,” the voice on the other end snapped. “It’s past noon and the sign says it should be available by now.”
“I apologize, sir. I’ll be right there.”
“You had better be. The service at this place is frankly astounding. Honestly, I don’t understand why anyone ever stays here. I have half a mind to leave a review warning people away.”
“I’m sorry, sir. I know your stay hasn’t been ideal, but please bear with us and we will do everything we can to make it right.”
“You can start by hanging up the phone and getting me my drink.”
The line went dead in my hand. I sighed and replaced the phone on the cradle.
“Let me guess, they wanted to give us a large tip and leave early?”
“Don’t quit your day job,” I chuckled. “You wouldn’t make it as a psychic. Come on, let’s go open the bar, before we have a mutiny on our hands.”
I grabbed the key to open the shutters from the desk and we headed into the dining room. Our three guests were standing around the locked bar, making a show of checking their watches. I struggled to keep my eyes from rolling. It was 12:03pm.
“You know,” Jack turned to the man next to him, but spoke loudly enough to be sure I could hear. “This reminds me of some of the dumps we stayed in before we made our fortune, you know? The little rat trap motels in the port towns we had to stay in.”
“The customer service certainly leaves something to be desired, for a 5-star resort,” his companion, Stewart, sniffed. “For the amount we are paying, I would expect better.”
I turned the lock, opening the bar. I let them vent; I didn’t particularly care if they left us a bad review, and I certainly couldn’t do anything with a good tip, so they were free to hate it here if they wanted. It mattered less to me than they could possibly imagine.
“Can you both hear that leak from your rooms?” the final man, Lesley, asked.
“Can we? I swear it is audible from everywhere in the hotel. There must be a dozen leaks in this old roof,” Jack laughed.
“It would explain that,” Stewart gestured to wet stain on the carpet across the room, oozing out from under a door I didn’t remember being there yesterday.
I glanced over to Vincent, he shrugged,
“I guess we’ve got a new connection to the ballroom. That’s kind of handy,” he said quietly to me, stepping behind the bar and reaching for the rum to pour; it was all they ever ordered.
“That’s another thing that reminds me of the old days,” Jack elbowed Lesley. “You would think a landlocked hotel would be drier than a yacht, but here we are. Maybe you should get out a mop, see if you remember how, Les.”
Lesley stiffened,
“I don’t do menial labor anymore, Cap.”
“Of course, of course,” Jack clapped Les on the shoulder. “Just a joke, mate. The usual, my good man,” he smiled at Vincent, who began pouring drinks.
As day transitioned into evening, I left the dining room in search of absorbent material, to put down on the leak that was spreading persistently into the dining room. I found some cat litter in a back closet, and it seemed like it would do, for now, so I returned and began spreading it over the growing stain. Jack at the bar looked up blearily, watching my work, before finally declaring,
“Oh, so it’s shit, then. That would at least explain the smell.”
“I think it smells more like a rotting carcass,” Stewart interjected.
He had a point there. Maybe I should get some baking soda from the kitchen.
“You know what?” Jack concluded. “Let’s get this next bottle to go. We’ll take it to our rooms for the night. I can’t stand the smell down here another minute.”
He grabbed the bottle from the bar, then he rose and led his friends out of the dining room. I couldn’t say I was sorry to see them go. Vincent circled out from around the bar and approached the soggy patch on the floor.
“So, is that the storage room?”
Now that we were alone, I risked turning the knob and I opened the door to see the same storage room we had entered earlier, though now the light fixture was pouring dark liquid onto the floor, the drip having turned into a deluge. I slammed the door again.
“Maybe we should get Manny,” I concluded.
Manny stood back, watching the ichor pour down like a waterfall. It was pooling around our shoes now, even standing outside the doorframe. He stroked his chin,
“How long has it been like this?”
“I don’t know,” I frowned. “It’s certainly sped up since we found it several hours ago. Any idea how we stop it?”
Manny closed his eyes for a moment, then frowned.
“I think, perhaps, that we should move the food and water from the kitchen, so they don’t get spoiled.”
“Move them where?” Vincent asked.
“To the top floor storage closet. It’ll be safest there. Come help me gather things up.”
“What, exactly, do you think is going to happen?” I raised an eyebrow.
“Let’s just get to work, we probably don’t have much time.”
Manny turned and strode into the kitchen. Vincent hung back and tapped my shoulder,
“What does he know that we don’t?”
“I have no idea, honestly,” I shrugged, and Vincent headed off towards the kitchen. “Do you know?”
I kept my voice low, so the others didn’t hear.
Oh, are you speaking to me now? Al sniffed.
“Depends, are you going to say anything useful?”
Perhaps for a…
“If you say ‘for a price’ we can go back to not talking. I am not trading anything for this.”
I think you will find I am much more helpful if you are willing to make a trade.
“I categorically disagree with that statement.”
Fine, I could feel him scowling. I can give you a hint for free. Maybe try asking yourself what he’s hiding from you?
“Your free hint is that he is keeping secrets?” I raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t that true of all of us? That isn’t exactly helpful.”
Well then, perhaps you would like to make a trade?
“Why do I even bother?” I sighed and headed into the kitchen to join the others.
Vincent was helping Manny load food onto a rolling cart. The Chef was, fortunately, nowhere in sight.
“Grab another cart and start loading the soft drinks and bottled water onto it. We don’t have much time before we need to be in our rooms,” Manny instructed.
I heaved a case of bottled water onto the cart, and we all got to work. By the time we made the final trip the carpet in the hall squished under my feet, oozing dark, foul-smelling liquid. It was coming in fast, now. Manny was probably right; we wouldn’t want the food supplies getting contaminated with… whatever this was. After he finished stacking the last bag of rice in the closet, Manny closed the door and turned the key in the lock.
“Well, we should find our rooms. It is getting late, and I doubt they will be in their usual place.”
As he turned to walk away, I noticed blood dripping down from his fingers onto the carpet.
“Manny, wait, your arm,” I pulled up his sleeve to reveal a thin, but deep cut running up his forearm. “What happened? Are you alright?”
Manny yanked his arm away,
“It’s nothing. I must have scraped it moving a box.”
It didn’t look like a scrape. It looked clean, with sharp edges, like a knife wound. But before I could say anything more, he was gone, disappearing down one of the halls.
“You ever wonder about him?” Vincent asked.
“Wonder what?”
“What his deal is. Come on, don’t play dumb. You’ve noticed how strange he can be. How he seems to know things about this place he shouldn’t. Surely, you’ve considered that he might be… one of them.”
“One of them?”
“You know, one of the things that run this place, like the Chef. A demon.”
“Manny? No, that’s ridiculous.”
“Why? He was here before you, maybe he was always here.”
“He is nothing like the Chef or the Masseur. It’s obvious that he is a person.”
“Is it? Maybe that’s just another trick. Maybe he is here to torment us, to steer us wrong.”
I shook my head,
“No, he’s helped us, helped me, many times. It’s impossible.”
“Alright,” Vincent shrugged. “But I have a bad feeling about this one, Lucy. Something about that… water. It isn’t right.”
“You always have a bad feeling. Come on, it’s time to get to sleep.”
“Right. See you tomorrow.”
However he knew, Manny was right. I found my room on the 2nd floor, in a back hallway. Since it wasn’t in its usual place, it took longer to find, but I did manage it before the deadline and locked myself in. Somehow, I could still hear the sound of flowing water, though. I could hear it everywhere in the hotel, in fact. In a way, it was soothing, people liked the sound of flowing water, right? So, keeping that in mind, I allowed it to lull me to sleep.
The morning arrived without fanfare, or a discernable difference in the light coming in through the windows. The storm continued to rage outside, and the clouds were so thick and dark that it was impossible to tell that dawn had broken. Still, my watch told me that day had arrived and so I left the room prepared to mop up whatever water had pooled downstairs and try to serve breakfast. No food had appeared in my room last night, so breakfast sounded very appealing. At least I could sneak a muffin or something. As I arrived at the stairs, I saw Manny standing on the landing, gazing down at the lobby.
“Is the mess bad?” I asked.
“You could say that,” Manny didn’t turn as I approached.
I reached the railing and gasped. The lobby was gone. The whole first floor was gone. All I could see was dark water, lapping against the stairs.
“How is that possible?”
“That’s not really a relevant question, in this place,” Manny noted. “Let’s just call it a flash flood.”
I jogged over to look out one of the windows, lightning flashed, illuminating an alien view, the lawn and garden were also gone. The only thing in sight was a sea of dark water, with the occasional tree protruding from the surface.
“What do we do now?” I asked.
“What we always do. Vincent has headed upstairs to lay out some food. We can help him, then lock up the rest and go clean rooms.”
“And if the water keeps rising?”
“We keep moving up the floors, I suppose.”
I stepped down the stairs until I was next to the water, and reached out a hand to touch the surface, wanting to test its temperature and texture.
Stop!
I froze in place, hand hovering above the liquid, the command so urgent I couldn’t ignore it. Trying to act casually, I rose and headed back up the stairs,
“Alright, I’ll go help with breakfast. Maybe we should put up a sign directing the guests to the 5th floor?”
“I’ll handle that. We will have to ration the food carefully; we don’t know how long we will need to make it last. Whatever you do, don’t show the guests where the food is locked up, and only bring out enough for us to have a small meal.”
“Right,” I nodded. “See you up there.”
I turned and headed up the stairs. I waited until I was out of earshot to ask,
“Ok, what was that about?”
Do not touch the water.
“Yes, I gathered that. Why?”
Because you belong to me. And I need you alive.
“What is the deal with that water, exactly?”
But only silence answered. He was done volunteering things for the moment, apparently. I sighed and continued up the stairs. Vincent was waiting for me on the fifth floor, hovering by the landing, looking down over the dark, gleaming surface of the new lake below.
“Have you ever seen anything like this before?” he asked as I reached the top of the stairs.
“Nope, this is a new one.”
“I wonder if this is what being on the Titanic felt like?” he mused. “Water rising, nowhere to go, just waiting for the end.”
“We aren’t on a ship, though.”
“No. Does that make it better, or worse?”
I shrugged and Vincent passed me a bagel,
“I figure we should eat the breads first; they’ll go moldy in this humidity. We can save the rice, potatoes, and canned goods for later.”
“Makes sense. Do we have a way to cook any of those things?”
“I looked around. Some of the rooms have fireplaces, I guess we can hang a pot over the fire, cook that way. But maybe all this will stop before we get to that point.”
“Maybe,” I wasn’t exactly feeling optimistic about it.
I helped Vincent lay out some fruit and soft breads on the hall table, so that when the guests awoke, they would have something to eat.
“What exactly are we going to tell them when they get here?” Vincent asked, putting out some bowls. “We can’t exactly say that the hotel is sinking and it’s all perfectly normal, can we?”
“What else is there to say?” I shrugged. “It’s some sort of flood. We don’t know any more than they do. It’s the truth, right?”
He considered that for a moment, then nodded.
“I suppose it is.”
A sudden commotion from downstairs drew us to the railing. The three guests were standing on the 2nd floor landing, looking down at the water, Manny was saying something I couldn’t quite hear, but the response was clear enough,
“What do you mean, underwater!” Steward shouted. “This hotel is on dry land. We specifically avoided anything near the ocean or any major body of water. Where did all this even come from?”
“We are located on a flood plain. It is possible that the dam broke upstream,” Manny explained calmly.
Dam, huh? That wasn’t a bad explanation.
“If that is true, where are the authorities, shouldn’t someone be here to evacuate us?”
“I am sure they will be here when they can. Until then, we just need to stay calm and safe. There is breakfast laid out on the 5th floor, please stay away from the water and we will relocate your rooms to the upper floors.”
The trio of men grumbled, but eventually they headed up the stairs. Vincent and I ducked back to our places. As they grabbed fruit from the table, Lesley scowled,
“I told you we should have left days ago. We could have moved to another hotel. Now we’re trapped here, in this dump.”
“Oh, relax, Les,” Jack chuckled. “We’ve been in worse scrapes before. This isn’t a big deal.”
“And if the water keeps rising?”
“I bet we could manage to make a passable raft, eh Stewart?”
Both men chuckled, sharing a private joke, but Lesley still looked anxious.
“I didn’t ever want to be out on the water again. We agreed.”
“Seriously, Les, just keep it together, alright? Let’s just eat something and find some way to kill time. I am sure the authorities will send a rescue crew and we’ll be out of here in no time.”
I opened the storage closet and felt my heart sink as I looked on the nearly empty room. We were down to only a couple of boxes of crackers and a few bottles of water. We had rationed the food carefully, but it had been over 2 weeks now, and we had almost exhausted our supply. I wasn’t looking forward to telling the others. Things had been getting tense. The power went out on the third day, and by now every cellphone we had was dead. Not that anyone could get a signal before that, anyway. The water had risen all the way to the fifth floor, so we were all trapped together on the top floor of the hotel, with nowhere else to go, if it rose any further. The guests had mostly given up hope for rescue, and the rest of us knew that was never a hope to begin with. So, now it looked like the six of us were just going to be trapped up here to starve, if we didn’t drown first. I covered my face with my hands.
“That bad, huh?”
“Vincent. No, it’s… it’s not…” what was the point in lying about it? “Yeah, it’s that bad. We are almost out of food, and the water has risen at least another foot since yesterday.”
“What are we going to do?”
“I have no idea. Let’s just get back to the group. We shouldn’t leave Manny alone, in case the guests come out of their rooms.”
“Right.”
We walked back to the central hallway together. As we entered the room, I saw Manny with his back to us, removing a soaked shirt. Even in the dim light, it was clear that his back was webbed with dozens of scars and cuts. Vincent cleared his throat and Manny hurriedly tugged on a dry shirt.
“I patched the hole in the roof,” he explained. “The rain should stop getting in from there, at least. And I brought down a full barrel of rainwater and replaced it with an empty one.”
“Thank you, Manny. At least the water from the sky is… normal. Because we are going to have to start drinking that water from time now on, I think.”
“And the food?” Manny asked.
“Some crackers, nothing more.”
“Well, I guess we will all need to tighten our belts, then.”
A moment of heavy silence passed between us, before a door burst open and Jack emerged.
“Where’s the food?” he barked. “We’re hungry and the table is bare.”
“Food’s gone,” Manny replied coolly. “There is water in the barrel, to take the edge off.”
“We can’t survive on only water.”
“We can, for another couple of weeks.”
“So that is your plan, to slowly starve to death?”
Manny shrugged but didn’t reply.
“Well, suit yourselves, I have a better plan.”
Jack turned on his heel and stormed out.
“What do you think they will do?” Vincent asked.
“He said already, didn’t he? Build a raft,” Manny replied.
“Maybe that isn’t a bad idea,” I offered. “We could help, try to get out of here?”
“Has attempting to leave ever worked?” Manny asked. “No, all we can do is hunker down until this resolves itself. And I don’t think going out on that water is a good idea.”
“Should we try to stop them, then?”
“No. If they are focused on building, it will keep them off our backs, for the time being. Let them do what they want.”
Vincent and I spent the next few days watching the three men lash together furniture using heavy objects as improvised hammers and strips of torn bed linens as ropes. They seemed to actually have some idea of what they were doing, and they quickly fell into a rhythm, with Stewart and Jack doing most of the planning and construction and Lesley being ordered to fetch supplies and carry heavy objects. He grumbled about it, but did what they told him. They mostly didn’t even notice we were there, as long as we made a show of occupying ourselves with some cleaning task or another. They never even bothered to ask why we were still cleaning and maintaining a flooded, sinking hotel all day. It was hard to tell if they just paid so little attention to us that they didn’t notice, or if they simply figured it was our way of coping with the situation. Occasionally, they would ask us for some material they needed but could not find, and we would help as much as we could, then they would go back to ignoring us. On the third day, when the raft was beginning to look seaworthy, Jack sat back on his heels, admiring their handiwork.
“Well, boys? What do you think? Will it float?”
Stewart rubbed his nose with his thumb,
“I think it’s as fine a vessel as we have ever crewed, captain.”
Jack laughed,
“And you thought we had left those days behind us for good, eh chief?”
“They are. But it looks like it will come in handy for us, one more time. Good luck, huh?”
“Good luck?” Lesley’s face turned dark; he had been increasingly dour over the last few days. “I don’t see the good luck in any of this. I think we are reaping our just reward.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, Les, this flood has nothing to do with us.”
“No? You think all this is normal, then? It’s been raining nonstop for weeks, the water keeps rising, no one has come looking for us. It’s like…” he hesitated before continuing. “It’s like we are alone in our own private hell. Just us and dark water everywhere. I don’t know how you aren’t thinking about it. I can’t stop. I see his face whenever I close my eyes. I see the dark puddle in the bottom of the lifeboat. Maybe this is what we deserve.”
Jack backhanded him across the face,
“Pull yourself together, swabbie. And don’t speak again until you’ve regained your composure,” he turned back to Stewart. “Now, we need to get this to the roof before we finish lashing it together, or it won’t fit. Then, we can either find a way to launch it, or we can wait until the water rises enough, what do you think, Mr. Stewart?”
“Well, captain, I say we rig up some ropes to lower it, because if we wait until the water is that high and anything goes wrong, we won’t have another chance.”
“Very good. Alright, Les, help us lift these pieces.”
The raft was relocated to the roof and the next 3 days were spent lashing it together and making the ropes strong enough to lower it the ever-dwindling distance into the dark water. When they were finally ready to launch, Vincent, Manny and I gathered on the roof to watch. I had to admit, I was really beginning to hope they succeeded, even if it didn’t seem likely. We were still rationing out the last few crackers, but three or four crackers a day did little to even take the edge off of the hunger, which gnawed on my guts like an animal. If this didn’t work, I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I looked over at Manny, his face grim and starting to look a little gaunt. As he turned to face me, I saw blood coating his neck and seeping into his shirt collar from a cut near his ear.
“You’re bleeding.”
He reached up and touched his neck, bringing his hand aways stained crimson,
“Shaving cut,” he offered, wiping it off absently with his hand.
I raised an eyebrow, but let it go. I had noticed Manny with little cuts or scars before, but he was always doing landscaping work or maintenance, so small cuts and injuries didn’t seem unusual. But suddenly, in such close quarters and confined indoors, it was apparent that he seemed to injure himself more than I would expect.
Curious, isn’t it? Al asked, speaking up for the first time in sometime.
“You have something to tell me?” I mumbled under my breath.
No, just noting that there is power in blood. I wonder what he uses it for?
Power, huh? That was probably worth thinking about. Later. For now, my attention was drawn to the makeshift ropes lowering the raft into the water. The raft settled into the water with barely a ripple, the liquid was entirely too thick and seemed to stick to the wood like oil, and the sound when it hit was less a splash and more of a splat. The three men looked at each other, confusion and concern on their faces.
“That doesn’t much seem like normal water, Cap’n,” Lesley noted.
“Probably lots of mud and silt mixed in, it’s nothing,” Jack waved away the concern. “Get down there and then you can help us down.”
Lesley shook his head, mutely.
“Fine, Stewart?”
The other man didn’t look happy about it, but he nodded apprehensively and moved to the edge of the roof and clambered down onto the raft. As it bucked and shifted under his weight, he lay down, waiting for it to stabilize, but instead, the rolling and pitching seemed to increase. Then, from the water under the boat came dozens of pale human hands. They were terribly bloated and marbled with green and grey. Corpse hands. Stewart looked down, terror written plainly on his face.
“No! It wasn’t my fault. I didn’t cause it,” he shouted at the corpses looming under him in the dark water. “You want the captain, not me!”
If that was meant to mollify them, it didn’t work. The hands gripped the wood and pulled, capsizing the raft and pitching Stewart into the water. He screamed as he hit the surface. Not just from fear, but pain. He tried clinging to flipped raft, but hands wrapped around his torso, trying to pull him into the dark. I could swear I heard whispers rising from the surface: Join us.
“Help me, please!” he cried.
He was too far down to reach from the roof, but maybe there was another way.
“Hurry, if we can get to the windows on the 5th floor, we can pull him in,” I shouted.
Vincent nodded and we ran down the stairs, searching for the room closest to him in the water. The screaming helped. When we dragged him inside, he was covered in scratches and bites from teeth that looked very human, some very deep and freely bleeding. His skin was stained from the dark water. The hands continued to reach for him, so I slammed the window shut, leaving them to paw at the glass, just as Manny burst into the room, followed by the other two guests. Seeing the seriousness of his injuries, Manny moved closer, kneeling next to me.
“Some of these are very deep. We need to get pressure on the wounds. Go grab some towels,” he instructed Stewart’s companions.
He inspected the bites and scratches more closely,
“Lucy, this bite is on an artery, press down on it hard, or he will bleed out. Vincent, go get some soap and water, we will have to clean this as best we can, under the circumstances.”
Vincent rose and Manny and I were left alone with Stewart, who seemed to have passed out.
“You seem to know what you are doing,” I noted, pressing down on the bleeding wound.
“I… I was a doctor, once,” he didn’t meet my eyes when he said it.
“Wow.”
“It was a long time ago. Another life.”
“Why didn’t you ever…” I was interrupted when Stewart’s eyes snapped open.
“I need a priest,” Stewart grabbed Manny’s collar, his eyes fevered and unfocused. “I need to confess my sins, before I die.”
“You aren’t going to…”
“We killed him,” he pressed on, oblivious to my objections. “Alan Ross.”
“The billionaire?” I blurted, surprised. “But he died in a… shipwreck…”
I fell silent. I remembered the news stories; Ross had been on a luxury yacht on the way to the Cayman Islands when it wrecked in a storm. The entire crew was lost, except for the captain, the chief mate, and a single deckhand, who had survived in a lifeboat. Ross was in the lifeboat as well, but he had already drowned, before they were able to drag him on board. They had drifted for over two weeks, with his corpse, before they were found and rescued. It had been a major news story, about a decade ago.
“It wasn’t like the news reported,” Stewart gasped. “When the yacht started taking on water, we should have stayed and helped to organize the evacuation of the crew. But Ross wanted to leave right away. He offered us money if we took just him and abandoned the others. We agreed, the captain and I. Lesley was just a deckhand, but he saw us leaving and followed. We quietly launched a lifeboat and fled, leaving the others to their fates.”
“How did Ross die?” I asked.
“He had a bag with him. It was so heavy he could hardly carry it. When he put it in the boat, it fell open and it was filled with diamonds. He was taking them to the Caymans. When we saw that, we… well, we decided. If he didn’t survive the shipwreck, if the diamonds were never found, who would know? We drowned him and hid the diamonds. When we were rescued, we waited awhile, then we sold them, made millions. But it wasn’t worth it… it wasn’t worth this. The guilt…”
He slumped to the ground. Manny met my eyes over the body,
“I think we lost him.”
As I looked up from the body, I saw Jack and Lesley standing there in the doorway, towels in their hands. There was an ugly look on Jack’s face.
“I wish he hadn’t told you that.”
“Told us what? He was raving, delusional,” I attempted.
“We were standing right here,” he replied.
I swallowed hard. Jack advanced into the room, holding a broken table leg like a club.
“We’ve kept this secret all these years, it isn’t getting out now.”
“We won’t tell anyone,” I protested.
“That isn’t a chance I am willing to take. Besides, with the food supply exhausted, it was always going to come to this, eventually. Might as well get it over with.”
“What are you doing?” I heard Vincent call from the doorway.
“Lesley, take care of him, will you?” Jack continued to advance on us.
“Please Jack, hasn’t there been enough death?” Lesley protested.
“Don’t act all innocent, you agreed to this, just like the rest of us. In for a penny, in for a pound, my friend.”
I glanced around for a weapon. Between the three of us, we should be able to take him, but I didn’t much like the look in Jack’s eyes. Manny had stood, backing slowly away as Jack advanced. Then the captain took a swing at him, Manny jumped to the side and the makeshift bat shattered the window behind him. Jack’s expression turned to one of horror as a pair of pale hands gripped the doorframe and a body began heaving itself through the open window. The broken glass sliced its bloated flesh to ribbons, but it didn’t halt the creature’s ingress. Dark, thick liquid that smelled of death oozed from its wounds.
“Alan!” Jack exclaimed, backing away swinging his bat at the creature.
“You owe me,” it gurgled.
We all backed out into the hall, but the creature advanced, slowly, leaving a trail of black liquid on the carpet as it walked.
“Is it money you want? I can get you your money back, your diamonds,” Jack offered.
“What use do I have for money?” it wheezed. “You owe me a life.”
Jack hit the body with his club, but it didn’t slow its progress. He screamed as it reached out a hand and closed it around his throat. Jack was lifted off his feet and the creature carried him to the stairs and plunged him into the dark water. At first, he flailed and fought, but a dozen hands rose from the water, gripping every part of his body. When he was completely immobilized, the corpse released him, letting him be dragged down into the depths. Then, it turned,
“Now,” it spoke to Lesley. “Will you fight, or come willingly?”
Lesley was trembling so hard he could barely stand,
“Please, I’m sorry, I beg you, spare me.”
The creature’s lips curled into a grotesque smile,
“Do you regret what you did to me?”
“I do, I do. I never should have agreed with their plan. Please, have mercy.”
“Did you have mercy on me, when I begged?”
Lesley shook his head.
“Then accept your fate.”
“What… what do you want me to do?”
“Walk into the water. Give your life willingly. Perhaps they will spare you, if you do,” the creature laughed, dark liquid bubbling from its mouth.
Lesley nodded haltingly and began to walk towards the stairs, stepping into the water, he walked down until he was submerged up to his waist. Then, the hands wrapped around his arms and torso and abruptly dragged him under. For a long moment, it seemed like he was gone, the same as Jack, but a moment later, he was thrown back onto the landing. Lesley raised his eyes, now as black as the water, and the creature smiled again, a tooth falling from its mouth as it did.
“Very good,” it burbled. “You have been baptized and born again into a new life.”
Lesley nodded, a serene smile on his face. Without a word, he rose and walked back into the room we had vacated only a moment before. Outside the window, the raft had been righted and floated serenely on the water. He looked down at Stewart’s body, then picked it up and draped it over his shoulder. Glancing back at the three of us, he winked,
“A snack for the journey.”
Then, he stepped out of the window onto the raft and drifted away.
“Don’t suppose any of you would care to join him?” the corpse of Alan Ross inquired. “Be born anew in the cleansing water?”
We all shook our heads silently.
“Oh well, another time, then.”
And with that, the corpse walked into the water and disappeared.
That night, our usual meals appeared in our rooms, and by the next morning, the water had receded, as if it had never been there. The electricity came back on, and the rain stopped. I was finally able to charge my phone and post this account. I tried asking Manny for more information about his time as a doctor but is as reticent as ever. I will keep trying, though, because Vincent and Al are right about one thing, there is something suspicious about how much he knows that he shouldn’t. But, that is a problem for another day, after all there is no need to rush, we aren’t going anywhere.
Until next time,
Lucy

2023.05.24 18:46 homedepotstillsucks Bend, OR Golf Trip (recap)

Thanks to this sub for all the great info in response to my post about planning a trip to the Pacific Northwest. I’m posting this here so others with the same plan can use it for ideas. Crosspost to PNWgolf.
We were 8 golfers, handicaps from 8-28, ages 50+.
LODGING
• stayed Hilton Doubletree. Nice hotel, centrally located in Downtown Bend. Breakfast not worth the $15.
GOLF
• one miss in the planning was assuming we could do a replay round in the afternoon at the same course. We could not. So I had to scramble to find a place that could take us last minute.
• Wednesday PM: warm-up round on the day we arrived: Lost Tracks. Greens in really bad shape. Some good holes. Missable.
• Thursday AM: Tetherow. Gorgeous course, great vistas, super interesting layout. Was unfair in some spots where a good shot in the fairway results in a lost ball or bad lie since many fairway bunkers were hidden. Undulating greens meant for some circus putts or pitches that wouldn’t hold. Everyone loved it but not everyone would want to play it again. Pretty consistent with reviews here at golf.
• Thursday PM: Juniper Preserve. Good course. Of all the courses we played in bend, most like an east coast course. Nothing terrible but nothing terribly memorable.
• Friday AM: Widgi Creek. Really liked this one. Very different from Tetherow. Narrow, tree-lined fairways. Wish they had more water at tees or beverage carts. Instead they had vending machines selling $4 Dasani.
• Friday PM: River’s Edge.. Some cool holes, course in good shape. Was fun to play. Was not happy when we were asked to surrender our carts on the 16th since we paid for 18-holes with cart for a 3:40 tee time. Was told at 7:30 they needed them back (they wanted to go home).
• Saturday: Pronghorn-Nicklaus. My favorite of the six courses. Very challenging. Greens were in top shape. We were all exhausted from the previous days and nights but had no complaints about the resort, staff or course. Some stunning holes and views.
FOOD/BARS
• This is a little hazy, but going by my credit card app…
• Wednesday: McMenamin’s. Good food, nice wine selection.
• Thursday: Hola. Huge margarita pitchers. Good Mexican/Peruvian food. D&D and Astro Bar (Karaoke) afterwards.
• Friday: River Pig
• Saturday: “Roam” for pre-game. Bend Brewing Company for nachos & beers. We were scouting bars afterwards but didn’t find much of a crowd anywhere. Guess we were too early as the crowds eventually came out at 11. Ended up at Astro Lounge and Casey’s.
TRANSPORTATION
• relied on UberXL the whole trip (or by foot in Bend at night). Availability was spotty and not at all available from Pronghorn so the resort hauled us back in two SUVees.

2023.05.23 21:18 journey2k17 Tennisgolf - Reliable website?

Hello, a newbie here wanting to get my own complete set so I don't have to pay rentals every time I go as they are starting to add up $$$. I was wondering if anyone knows this website called the tennis golf (https://www.thetennisgolf.com/)? I found a fb marketplace set of clubs for Wilson Luxe for $110 and saw a used one on this website for $98, which isn't bad. However, they seem to also have a new set on sale for $99. The latter kind of threw me off so does anyone know if this site is legit? I couldn't find any reviews online or in here so any info is appreciated! Thank you!!

2023.05.23 18:46 BMFH1972 First trip of many/// Trip Review Part 2 - San Ignacio area

Trip Review Part 2- San Ignacio
5/17/23 - Travel Day
We decided to headed to Tropic Air early, original flight was scheduled for 11:30 but we wanted to get a jump on things, so we returned the golf cart (by just leaving it at a specific location, with the keys in the back lol) and checked with the airline and they moved us up to the 10am flight with no worries. 🔆 I cannot say enough about their customer service and willingness to deal with our changes to itineraries. 🔆
We land in Belize City, and pick up our rental from Crystal Rent a car… again great customer service, and set out on the Western Hwy.
We had decided to go down the Hummingbird Highway to check out St. Herman’s Cave and the Blue Hole (Cenote) sponsored by the Audubon Society of Belize.
On our way we stopped to eat at Las Papalas (check) for lunch. It was great, great food, service, and convenience for our drive. We then got to the cave/swimming hole and started our adventures.
🔆 St. Herman’s Cave 8/10 (I’m just not that excited over caves lol) was really cool, after a short walk and with a head lamp they will let you go in about 200 yds. Beyond that you need a guide. They also offer cave tubing and guided tours. And it seems way less busy than the other areas but we could have just gotten lucky, as we were the only ones there for the first 15-20 min. But it’s so cool to be trusted to go in and look around and not be under the scrutiny of watchful eyes. And says so much about the Belizean Culture and people. More about that later 😉
🔆 the Blue Hole - 10/10 there’s 2 ways to get there from St. Herman’s, a walking trail (1.4 miles) or driving, we opted for the drive… the heat IS NO JOKE. I am telling you this both to prepare you and also encourage you to go for it even if you think you’ll melt because my “delicate” self survived🤣🤣🤣Hahahaha bring the ability to have water all day, be prepared to buy more water, and hydrate your body more than you think you’ll need to… okay back to the Blue Hole. It’s the perfect way to start the trip to the West. And we got it to ourselves for 20-30 minutes which was amazing. It’s cold, it’s beautiful, and it’s a magical place. I felt like it healed all my aches from banging around on that golf cart in AC for 3.5 days 😅 definitely worth to detour!
After this dip, we headed to Lost Compass Cabanas, in San Ignacio.
Easy enough to find, even stopped at the market for breakfast stuff, and headed up the hill.
Right off the bat, I knew I was, and felt we both were going to vibe better in this quaint town. It’s architecture, layout, hills, people, mix of cultures, the whole area just seemed like an exhale from a bustling couple of days in San Pedro.
🔆 Lost Compass Cabanas - 10/10 what a gem of a property. Adam/Rebecca are fantastic hosts, the cabanas are a perfect home base for you to start and end the days, and if you just feel like chilling, there’s plenty of wildlife and birding on the compound. You can tell they have put some sweat equity into their dreams and love sharing them with their guests. They will help you with suggestions on food, activities, shopping, whatever you need, even make reservations for you if needed! Exceptional people and stay!
Once we got checked in, and the AC cranked up we headed into town to eat at a local favorite Ko-Ax Han-Nah (Let’s Go Eat).
🔆 Ko-Ox Han-Nah (Let’s Go Eat) 10/10 - I will start this with a word to the wise, visitors are different than tourists. And when you’re clearly not a visitor, it shows… when we walked in there were 2 gentlemen who clearly were NOT visitors and would not budge in order to let us sit at our table. It was so awkward for us and the poor staff, because we had to move to one of their big tables set aside for bigger parties, but no worries, the staff was more than accommodating once we told them we would gladly move in the event a larger party came in.
The food was great, the watermelon juice was the best we had and we order it everywhere lol… Todd got a burger 10/10, I got stew chicken and rice and beans 10/10, all in all great experience and we see why it’s the locals fav.
After dinner we pinged the folks at LCC for an ice cream referral and the sent a pin…
🔆 Ice Cream Shoppe… 8/10…good ice cream, nothing spectacular but cold and served with a smile
We headed to bed, as we had our first ruin and adventure the next day.
5/18 Day 5 - Cahal Pech, Big Rock Falls, Rio On Pools
We cooked breakfast, filled all our water bottles, and headed to Cahal Pech which is like 6 minutes from LCC. Blew my mind that it was dead in the middle of town😂
🔆 Cahal Pech - 8/10 one of the smaller ruins around, and in my opinion one of the best to do first. It sort of sets the tone for what to expect, give you an idea of how the heat will affect your experience, how the Mayans love a stair, and set of the overall Ruin vibe. Also being the smaller of the ruins, you are blown away as you start visiting the larger ones. I think of you did Cahal Pech after Xunantunich, you’d be disappointed or at least not as impressed.
I enjoyed it and had I not gone to the next one, it probably would have gotten an 10/10 but once you see Xunantunich, you will understand lol
We went around 10:30 and quickly realized that it gets hot, fast. We learned almost immediately that if it doesn’t involve water, we need to be up and moving much earlier in the day in order not to stroke out from the heat 🥵
We left Cahal Pech and headed to Mountain Pine Ridge to get in the water, immediately lol.
Mountain Pine Ridge is wild. Who would have thought you’d find a pine forest in the middle of the Jungle and yet there we were. The roads were fine, partially because it was the dry season, partially because they are working on paving and fixing the road to Caracal, but overall it was quite a nice drive. We asked for directions when we stopped at a fruit and vegetable stand and we’re glad we did, there’s really nothing out there and no service, and it could be easy to get turned around, but just follow the signs to GAIA and you should be fine.
🔆 Big Rock Falls - experience 10/10, climb in/out 4/10 🤣🤣🤣 the falls are so worth it but brace yourself. It’s a climb down and a climb up. Take your time. Take breaks. DRINK WATER. The falls are amazing. The rocks can be a bit slippery so be careful. You can jump into the first big pool from the rock on the left but don’t dive unless you have travel insurance that covers helicopter rescues hahaha. You can also jump from higher up on the right into the main falls pool. But just be careful. It would not be an easy or fun experience to have to get hauled out of there.
Bring lunch or some snacks and enjoy the afternoon before making the climb out. I was blown away by my strength and perseverance because a year ago I would still be sitting there 💯
After we hiked out we drove up to Rio On Pools. If you’d doing both I would STRONGLY recommend doing the falls first so you’re sure to have the strength and endurance to get back up from the falls.
🔆 Rio On Pools. 10/10 Easy to access, beautiful, not very populated when we went, and super relaxing. Todd hopped around the pools and I just soaked and regrouped from the falls .
Drive home… easy.
We got street food from a vendor in downtown and learned that the burritos in Central America from stands are not the same as home. They are more like a tortilla roll up with some light stuffing lol. But still super good.
I think we were both asleep at 8:15 🤣😴🥱🤣
5/19: Recovery Day - Butterfly Ranch/ Botanical Gardens
We got up, had breakfast in house and headed out much earlier.
🔆 Green Hill Butterfly Ranch 6/10 - we got there right when it opened (9am) and we’re greeted with the sounds of many school kids super excited to be there 😬😨🤪😵🤣 So we waited them out surrounded by the most amazing and IMHO the best part of the ranch… the hummingbirds. They had 3 feeders and there were at least 25 hummingbirds flying around all at once, alternating with others allowing us to see so many varieties.
The rest…butterflies and caterpillars were just kind of impressive. Not sure what my expectations were but just didn’t really wow me like I expected.
We decided to walk the jungle path, and about 1/2 mile back we found our first Toucan… and that was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! Had it not been for this sighting and the hummingbirds i would probably not recommend going 😬 or at least not expecting to see a ton of butterfly species.
Next stop, lunch and then Botanical Gardens
🔆 Carms - 10/10 We stopped at a roadside place outside of San Ignacio, called Carm’s. What a great authentic, food spot. The food was great, the service, the couple runnng the joint, all such a delight. Definitely worth a stop.
🔆 Belize Botanical Gardens - 8/10 only because I think since it was dry season a lot just wasn’t blooming or flourishing. And it was HOT. We went with the intention of getting in the river and swimming there (which they offer) but somehow got off track and ended up hiking a loop back to the main areas. By then I had to have AC and be done 😂
But we saw some really cool plants and wile list came across some leaf cutter ants and on the way out say another toucan and this one was like right in front of us… so on a better day, I definitely think it would have been a 10/10.
We made it back, showered and went to Guava Limb based on the recommendation from LCC and some other locals.
🔆 Guava Limb 10/10. Atmosphere, service, food, drinks, all top notch. Definitely check it out. Can’t really say enough 😍😍😍
Back to LCC, bed by 8 🤣 (that heat will drain ya)
5/20: Xunantunich Ruins and check out of LCC😥/check in to Alma Del Rio in Cristo Rey 🥰
Adam and Rebecca were super accommodating and we left our stuff, went to the ruins super early, and swung back by and picked up our stuff so we wouldn’t have to be climbing in the sweltering heat 🥵 they are the BEST 💯
🔆 Xunantunich: 17/10 - this was probably my favorite part of the inland experience other than the people, vibe, and wildlife. First off you cross the river on a rope car ferry, so crazy. ✔Be sure to tip the Ferry folks. And this is where, if you want, you can hire a guide. We didn’t but I have all intentions on going back and hiring one to see if what we guessed was what was actually happening on the various structures, plazas, etc.
What a magnificent place. It’s very well maintained, it draws you in, and convinces you that you can climb to the heavens one step at a time. And we did. And I survived 😬😨🤪😵🤣 those Mayans LOVE a stair lol.
We stayed for about 2 hours and probably would have stayed longer if we didn’t have to check out, and we wanted to go to the San Ignacio Market on our way “out” of town.
Definitely go and see the ruins. It’s really a sight to behold.
🔆Lunch at The Xunantunich Restaurant - 8/10 based on another referral, we grabbed lunch and dessert after the ruins. My tacos were great, Todd’s burger was good, the ice cream was freezer burnt but cold lol. Had the ice cream not been weird it would have been a 10/10
Ran back, grabbed our stuff, said our goodbye and headed to the market and t check in our last place.
🔆San Ignacio Market 10/10… but due to the heat, we only lasted about 15 minutes lol. Like I said, the heat is something else 🤣 we got some blankets, baskets, and some veggies for dinner and headed out
🔆Alma Del Rio/Casa de Sophia 10/10: I don’t even know where to start. The only downfall we found was it’s right on a busy road so at first it’s a bit distracting from the natural beauty you’re surrounded with, but after a minute you forget all about it. The compound is extremely secure, it’s absolutely beautiful, you have access to the river, so much wildlife, and the little details everywhere once you get inside. The outdoor shower is magical. The view is remarkable. The fresh flowers, the gentle touches throughout to make you feel at home were amazing. The hosts did all they could to help and make sure you’re comfortable.
There is no AC, so be prepared to be warm but not miserable. But if I can survive, any one of y’all can. It’s seriously worth it. When I go back I’ll be spending a few extra days there for sure 📷
5/21: Beth did nothing but paddle boarding the river and relaxing. Todd when to Caracal.
5/22: home.
I quickly was drawn in by the West, the people, the pace, the vibe, the sounds, the quiet, the opportunities to explore, the opportunities to rest, the grind on every corner to feed others and provide for their selves, the tenacity...folks just walking those hills in jeans and a smile in that heat, the tempo, the undercurrent was almost like a symphony lulling you in. I can see why so many folks come believing they have found their mecca, and I can see why so many leave after a while because they don't take the time to really understand what they are giving up vs. what they are gaining.
To me at first glance, it felt like I had come home. I look forward to returning very soon and spending more time exploring the area, the country and finding my way to an unBELIZEable life...(sorry I had to use the catch phrase at least once LOLOLOL...

2023.05.23 17:42 BMFH1972 First of many trips to Belize - Trip Review Part 1 Ambergris Caye

Trip Review… very honest but also “opinions are like”… 😀😃🤣😂
We spent a total of 10 days in Belize, with the first 3 full days in Ambergris and 6 in the San Ignacio area
💢Highlights are marked with 🔅 if you want to skip the details
Ambergris was both absolutely beautiful and a tad overwhelming for me. I get the allure and completely understand why so many people love it, but the hustle and bustle and the vibe wasn’t really my style.Doesn’t mean it wasn’t amazing, because vacations are what you make of them and we carved out a way to make it fit our vibe.
Day 1: Travel day, Belize Food Tours, and bed. We arrived late due to a delay in Houston. We got through immigration, got our luggage and through customs, out to the connecting flights and Tropic Air Belize was so incredibly accommodating. They had planes lined up for the delayed passengers, and got all of us on the next available flight, and over to Ambergris seamlessly. The concierge for the airline was great, called our driver from the Airbnb and the golf cart company and arranged for them to meet us when we landed.
And we were off 🛫 Landing in San Pedro, we were met with our proxy for the rental at Las Amapolas (amazing property, we will get to that later) and golf cart from Avis/Budget (don’t skimp on the golf cart, shocks and padding are essential lol).
Right out of the gate you can tell what they say is true that the Belizean people are some of the nicest, most chill people you’ll find. We started the drive up towards the north end to drop off our stuff. From the start you learn that Belizeans love a speed bump, and that every drainage line in the road is a challenge if you don’t have good shocks on your golf cart lol. It’s crazy, hard to imagine a whole village but on golf carts 🤣
We navigated through a bit overwhelmed by the hustle of it all, but are always up for new experiences so we just rolled with it. As we crossed the bridge to go north (towards not so secret, Secret Beach), we were immediately hit with the dreaded sargassum stank… at first, and after the dry few days, it was quite a first impression 🥴. It’s nothing anyone can control and for the most part the folks cleaning the beaches are doing their best to try and deal with it best they can, but that road gets quite fragrant.
The other thing you notice is how desperately folks need to come up with an affordable way for the locals and visitors alike to deal with their trash. This is NOT a Belize problem, but a world problem, but when you come to a place that has no infrastructure to deal with their waste, you start to see the lasting impacts that our trash has on the environment. But I digress, just know when you drove up north, you will not see the beauty you see when you drive up the coast via boat to head out snorkeling/diving.
Enough of that dribble 🤐
🔅Las Amapolas… the property, the hosts, the accommodations are all top notch. if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, be right near Secret Beach, and have access to a great Capt and fabulous snorkeling right a kayak away, then this is your spot. Just remember the drive… and there’s not much nightlife out there, so if you’re partying and wanting to be out and about this might not be your best option.
🔅 Belize Food Tours: We did the food tour the first night so we would have options for food because my goodness there are SO MANY PLACES TO EAT 😨. How these places stay open during the low season is a mystery to me. Good news is we always got in without reservations, or a wait, bad news is in a lot of cases we were either the only folks are there were just a few other tables sat. And almost everywhere we ate was amazing.
The WTF crew are great, we had Mark as our guide and he was amazing. The tour takes you to places in the middle of San Pedro that you’d most likely never visit due to the overwhelming amount of choices available to eat. And of course Elvi’s which is a tourist spot for sure.My favorite part of the food tour was our guide Mark and Brianna’s… the rest was great, but those were definitely my favorites. Our group was a mixed bag but what I realized pretty quickly is that Ambergris Caye is much more attractive to folks a bit more demanding than my crowd tends to be. Not saying that it’s a bad vibe, just not the vibe I tend to lean towards when I travel. From what I understand Caye Caulker might have been more my vibe than Ambergris which just gifts me the opportunity to visit there next 😍 The ride home in the dark was awesome… we loved the adventure and the quiet (other than the golf cart) and arriving at LA is such a beautiful experience. They have it lit up and it’s truly magical.
Day 1 first full day: we were scheduled to snorkel but Capt. Thomas messaged us and said to wait a day due to the weather coming in. So we set out for a completely different agenda.
🔅We had breakfast at Ak’bol. 10/10 recommend. Hands down one of the best meals (twice), service, atmosphere, all the things. Make the drive and go get breakfast, stop on your way to Secret Beach, definitely make the effort, you won’t be disappointed.
🔅 We went to the Iguana Sanctuary, and met John who gave us a tour. It’s a pretty moving experience, created in memorial of a lost friend with 2 iguanas and now, run off of donations, has over 100 they protect. And in addition you get to see their home made out of mangroves which was so ingenious and beautiful. There’s a local cook there serving up some local fare that had we not just eaten, we would have jumped on. If you have the opportunity, go and visit, you won’t be disappointed.
🔅 We headed north to hit up Secret Beach, stopped at the very popular Truck Stop 8/10 and got some ice cream, sat on the back dock and watch the storm roll in. Typically I’m not a huge tourist spot place but the Truck Stop is great. The vibe is great, the set up is really nice, drinks are good. We didn’t eat there so I can’t rate the food but I do wish there would be at least one local food restaurant there… seems like a missed opportunity for folks who typically aren’t going to try a road side stand. But that’s just an opinion and like I said before…🤣
🔅Not so secret, Secret Beach… 7/10… a bit touristy for me but I imagine on a beautiful day it’s worth it… the drive is a drive. It’s super neat to see some off grid homes. The bars and restaurants that have found a way to be in business out there is fantastic. And it’s so beautiful out there… we rode in a torrential downpour which was hysterical, but meant we got the place to ourselves. When you pull up it’s sort of like walking into a casino for the first time, lol. So many options, we went with Maruba 10/10 and it was great. Music was chill, servers were hilarious, sea roaches were a thing lol, we brought floaties and enjoyed a drink and hung out for a while and then headed back in.
🔅 Aji Tapa for dinner. 10/10… great atmosphere, food, service, Miss Dakota to play fetch with… Aji was definitely a highlight of the trip.
Day 2: Snorkeling, Staghorns, Stingrays, and Sharks. We woke up with no power, due to an overnight storm, no power, no problems mon.
🔅 Breakfast at Tropical Escape. 8/10… food was good, but breakfast is not hard to mess up. But we got hot coffee, hot food, and FANTASTIC service from Ronnie, so it made a sort of odd way to start the day into a great one.
🔅 Snorkeling with Capt Thomas 23/10. One of the best times ever. He kept us away from the crowds, showed us some beautiful Staghorns, we went to some local spots to see marine life, and we ended the tour where they clean the fish after a fishing expedition. So we got rays and sharks without the crowds. He showed us places to go on the kayak. He is so knowledgeable, local, and a great guy. Highly, HIGHLY recommend. Snorkeling/diving is where I see the attraction to Ambergris. The reef is stunning. The views from the water to the shore are incredible. The colors of blue alone are out of this world. (And night life, hustle and bustle… if those are your things, this is your spot.)
🔅 Elvi’s for dinner… here’s where I’m sure it gets controversial lol 5/10. Atmosphere is the winning point… and the history. Service was good as well. The food was just eh. I was pretty bummed because after the food tour I was really excited to try but I don’t get the hype. Or maybe I do and I just prefer a different style. Either way, I say go for it, tons of people love it, but it’s okay if you don’t. You aren’t alone 😁
🔅 Caye Custard - You scream, I scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM!!! The est I have had probably everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 20/10
Day 3: Snorkeling via kayak. Go for it. Make sure you have decent gear so you don’t get frustrated with your mask and go back after 10 minutes.
🔅Ak’bol the second time. 10/10 again. Picked up snacks and headed out. We saw so much right there by our place. Spent the day just swimming around by ourselves with all the sea creatures. Heavenly day.
🔅 La Sanpedrana 10/10. We went here on the food tour but just to pick up our key lime pie. Went back because nothing was open on a Tuesday. It was fabulous. Food was delicious. Service was great. Atmosphere was top notch. Don’t miss out on this place.
Day 4, headed inland. Got on an earlier flight to the mainland, thanks to Tropic Air being absolutely amazing to work with, and started our trip to the jungle
All in all Ambergris was great. It was definitely not our vibe but we made the best of it. Having traveled to many parts of the Caribbean, this was probably the busiest area we stayed in, so if you love a ton of options to eat, and ways to feel like your in a different place but not too different… this is definitely the spot for you.
I would highly recommend going to AC for younger folks, folks who are starting their travels and want somewhere safe and/or folks who need/want a place not too difficult to navigate, with options to play in the water both on the calm side and the reef side, meet people from all over the world and get a small taste of what Belize has to offer.
I’m so glad we decided to come to the West of Belize and see how the other half lives. Do yourself a favor and make the trip. You’ll be amazed at the difference (and the similarities… all the best ones anyways)
