2023.04.24 08:42 Poopybuttsuck What's the cheapest option to port my number to for a day or so while waiting for a new sim?
Hello long story short visible customer support is useless. I wrote down my port out pin and account number 5 days ago and didn't realize it was only for 7 days. And now the visible app won't let me into my account even though I'm using bitwarden auto fill so there's no chance of me mistyping. I only have a day and the customer service and the forget password option link just takes me back to the homepage. So I've given up on visible $35 a month isn't worth me hitting my head repeatedly into a wall.
All 3 carriers are good where I live but Verizon is the very best due to all the small cells they have here and the cbrs they have deployed. Att is good but they don't have 5g at the amusement park I go to sometimes and that's not really a problem since I haven't gone recently but If I wanted to it could be a problem. TMobile has a knocking sound on phone calls here I suspect our engineers in Virginia arent that great. Regardless I just want it to be good for a day or so and mint is too expensive because theres a big roaming area near me that I've only been through twice but If I went again I wouldn't be too happy since I don't know the area and would get lost driving through it. And I also don't trust TMobile native coverage in the Shenandoah valley even though I only go a couple times and haven't been in several months and probably won't go back til November when the leaves change. ATT is good I just think it's really expensive because I'm on a single line and I would have to call the port activation center and they might not do it fast enough and my number may be lost forever because of visibles incompetence. Cricket is expensive and I don't care for the salesman there and them charging activation fees and I would probably have to call the port center anyway.
Visible would be perfect if there system didn't try stealing my number and their customer service worked. My area is seriously blanketed in n77 and in the best case scenario I would be on postpaid but I can't afford that single line and no one else would come with me and I don't trust circled in because I don't know them. Everyone in my family is on their own lines despite me recommending countless times that is joining together would save and my best friend is paying metro 60 a month and only uses 5 gbs a month. I've tried helping him but he doesn't listen and I guess he was right this time because visible did screw me over. Us mobile is probably my best bet and I'll get somewhere between 10 and 15 gbs because even though that's more than I need, spectrum goes down a lot and as well I like having the safety net. And as well I'm trying to be better with money and keep my s22 even though I'd prefer a pixel for stock Android.

2023.04.04 16:08 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Indict Makes Right by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (04/03/23)
"It's unethical for a prosecutor to use a witness who has such a long history of lying." - Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz, suddenly very concerned about someone lying to law enforcement Mr. Indict Now
A happy Trump indictment week to us all. - Yes, disgraced former president Donald Trump has officially made his way from Florida to New York ahead of his arraignment scheduled for tomorrow. Trump reportedly will face charges related to his hush money payment to adult-film actress Stormy Daniels, after a Manhattan grand jury voted to indict him on Thursday. Trump is due to surrender on Tuesday, and will likely be fingerprinted before appearing before the judge. He will (naturally) plead not guilty. But if he pleads “not guilty because this is a witch hunt,” then you must take a shot of Fireball. We don’t make the rules.
- Trump has wasted no time padding out his (already considerable) legal team, hiring prominent white-collar criminal-lawyer-to-the-stars Todd Blanche, who has urged the judge not to allow videography, photography, and radio coverage of the arraignment. Blanche previously represented Trump’s 2016 campaign chairman and fellow criminal Paul Manafort.
- On top of that, federal investigators and the Justice Department have reportedly gained new evidence pointing to obstruction of justice by ole’ Donny boy after he got caught allegedly/definitely stealing classified government documents and hiding them at Mar-a-Lago. Law-enforcement used emails and text messages from a former Trump aide to piece together new details, which highlight the degree to which the investigation under special counsel Jack Smith (will never get over how generic this name is) has begun to centralize the obstruction-of-justice elements at play.
News of Trump’s long-delayed legal accountability have garnered all the expected reactions. - As we’ve seen every time Trump faces real repercussions for his bad deeds, a very loud group spanning the political spectrum has arisen to insist “this will only help him politically.” Most notably, there was this dreadful analysis from New York Times chief White House correspondent Peter Baker who said that the indictment puts Trump “exactly where he loves to be — in the center ring of the circus,” and that the integrity of the case is at stake because Trump is treating it like a spectacle. Baker and others like him have argued (as many did during both impeachment hearings as well as in the aftermath of the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago) that this will only embolden Trump and ultimately help him politically.
- The trouble is: it’s just not a particularly good argument. A new CNN poll finds that 60 percent of Americans approve of the indictment even before it’s been unsealed, but even if that weren’t the case, does it somehow make more sense to continue to let Donald Trump commit crimes ad infinitum with impunity? There are many parallels between Trump and his fellow disgraced former president Richard Nixon, but one of the most overlooked is that the right wing also characterized the Watergate hearings as a partisan witch hunt before public opinion gradually turned against him.
Trump is a grifter; he will always be able to
squeeze dollars and media attention out of a scandal or when his back is against the wall. The man is also a career criminal, and rooting for him to continually evade justice out of fear of a momentary bump in his numbers is inexcusable cowardice, no better than an actual political crusade.

The Dominion Voting Systems defamation lawsuit against Fox News is looking increasingly Not Good for the standard bearer of televised disinformation. The Delaware judge overseeing the case ruled on Friday that the case will proceed to a jury trial in mid-April, meaning that the network’s highest-ranking executives and big-name hosts could be compelled to testify about their roles in spreading the Big Lie. Perhaps as significant, Judge Eric Davis also awarded Dominion “summary judgment” on the falseness aspect of the defamation suit, which means jurors at trial will only consider the other element of defamation: malice. Davis ruled that, based on the evidence made public through the proceedings thus far, “none of the Statements relating to Dominion about the 2020 election are true.” He also said that “pure opinion,” which is protected by the First Amendment, does not apply in this case because the false claims were accusations of criminal activity made by newscasters purporting “to be sources of accurate information.”

The United States already allocates an eye-popping portion of its annual budget to the military, but now the line between the larger economy and the Pentagon may get even blurrier. In the past year, the Pentagon has begun providing loans, guarantees, and other financial assistance to technology companies it considers crucial to national security, forms of support beyond standard grants and contracts it normally uses. Now, it has taken things a step further.
When Silicon Valley Bank failed in March following a bank run, the Defense Department lobbied the government to issue a bailout to insure its investments. But there was no indication that any Pentagon contractors might have been at risk, nor did any of the major defense contractors like Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing have any cash in SVB. So a bank bailout in the name of “national security” would have both baseless and unprecedented. But that hasn’t stopped the proposition from advancing or picking up influential friends like Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA). Relatedly, Warner was notably one of the Democratic senators who voted to repeal key parts of the Dodd-Frank Act in 2018, which is how this mini-crisis arose in the first place.

"Paying people not to talk about things, hush money, is ordinary in modern America." - Tucker Carlson, #1 anchor on the official Hush Money Network Chairmen Of The Deplored
Looks like there’s no indictment today. Aw, drat. But that hasn’t stopped the GOP from unleashing a firestorm of lies and invective to protect their golden goose.
- Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lindsey Graham warned that arresting disgraced former president Donald Trump would “blow up our country,” and “is a bunch of B.S.” Without having the foggiest idea what the first Trump indictment might include, Graham also claimed that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is a “George Soros-backed prosecutor,” because his 2021 election campaign was partially funded by Color of Change PAC. They love to pull out George Soros—sorry, (((George))) (((Soros)))—when the going gets tough!
- House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also downplayed the allegations against Trump and called the D.A.’s investigation “just political.” Following comments like the ones from McCarthy and Graham, on top of yesterday’s conspiracy theory-ridden, threatening letter to Bragg from three House GOP chairmen, demanding Bragg sit for sworn testimony, Bragg issued a statement today insisting that he and his office “will not be intimidated by attempts to undermine the justice process, nor will we let baseless accusations deter us from fairly applying the law.”
- By sheer coincidence, definitely having nothing to do with the GOP becoming an overtly violent party, someone called a bomb threat into a New York City courthouse just as a lower Manhattan judge was about to start proceedings in New York Attorney General Letitia James’s unrelated financial-fraud lawsuit against Donald Trump. The courthouse was temporarily closed and searched, after which it was determined that the threat was unfounded. NYPD announced it had increased uniformed presence throughout the city but stressed that there were “no credible threats,” at this time, though they remained prepared for protests and counterprotests.
No amount of weak protests from Trump’s gang of allies will help him outrun the law, but the mainstream media and even powerful elected politicians also seem to have learned nothing from the past seven years. - As Trump nears criminal indictment, the political hand wringing about whether or not this will be the moment the GOP finally breaks with the former president is in full effect. Are we really doing this again? For the one-thousandth time? If the past seven years have taught us anything it’s that there’s no “breaking point” when the Republican Party will say enough is enough, and expel him from the party, especially if it would require caving to the libs. (If Trump ever proposed increasing taxes, though…)
- In fact, much of the discourse surrounding Trump’s looming indictment(s) feels like deja vu. The Democratic Party’s resident lump of coal, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), said he thought an indictment would “just embolden” Trump and could have “the reverse effect of what people might be thinking.” Wow, we’ve never heard that one before, Joe! Truly groundbreaking stuff. As with all of his myriad crimes, the fact that Trump could invariably use justified legal consequences as a fundraising tool is not a good reason not to prosecute him! This isn’t difficult!
When it comes to Trump, how he handles accountability, and how the Republican Party then handles him, we’ve seen all of this before. Sarah Longwell, a vocal GOP critic of Trump and Founder of the Republican Accountability Project
said that if Republicans fail to break with the malignant Trump at a time like this, “they’ll have no one to blame but themselves when Trump is the nominee again.”
Sound’s a lot like Lindsey Graham’s famous May 2016 tweet “If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed…and we will deserve it,” doesn’t it? And we all know what happened next.

Fox News producer Abby Grossberg alleged in a new lawsuit that Fox lawyers tried to get her to take the fall for the network’s repeated airing of conspiracy theories about Dominion Voting Systems by coercing her into giving misleading testimony in the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit. Grossberg alleges that Fox News lawyers coached her and she felt “pressured not to name names or implicate others, in particular prominent male on-air personalities and Fox News executives.” Both Fox and Dominion presented their arguments before Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis.
The Judge appeared to be skeptical of Fox’s arguments that they were reporting on Dominion neutrally and do not meet the criteria for “actual malice”, for good fucking reason! Davis said, “To me, it doesn’t seem intellectually honest that you apply actual malice and say there’s neutral reporting privilege…How can you be neutral if you’re knowingly doing false things?” Dominion’s lawyers now have presented ample internal Fox communications that prove the network repeatedly spread slanderous falsehoods and hosted guests who did the same out of fear of losing viewers to its far-right competitors like Newsmax.
What Else?
DOJ prosecutors in the special counsel’s office have procured “compelling” preliminary evidence that disgraced former president Trump knowingly, intentionally misled his own attorneys about his personal retention of classified White House materials. A new United Nations report estimates that 43,000 Somalians died last year in the country’s longest drought on record, half of whom are estimated to have been children. A federal judge ruled against Donald Trump on Monday in his efforts to keep key evidence out of his civil rape trial brought by former magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll. The city of Torrance, CA, has paid a man in Redondo Beach $750,000 after two police officers allegedly spray-painted a swastika inside his car in 2020. An investigation of the incident led to the discovery of rampant racism and homophobia among Torrance police officers, resulting in prosecutors dismissing dozens of felony cases.
The Georgia state senate passed SB 140 today, which denies transgender youth gender-affirming care and imposes harsh penalties on doctors who attempt to provide such care. The bill now heads to Gov. Brian Kemp for a hateful signature.
Republican Chairman of the House Oversight Committee James Comer has gone two-feet-in on his self-appointed role to investigate every unhinged claim about president Biden and his family, even going so far as to lament that the president’s late son Beau was never investigated. Just a uniquely horrible guy!
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow appeared in court today (NOT for the jade eggs you put in your vagina, this time) in response to a lawsuit filed by a 76-year-old retired optometrist who claims Paltrow violently crashed into him while skiing in 2016. Three former employees of a Virginia mental hospital in Virginia were arrested and charged with second-degree murder last Thursday over the death of a Black man who was transported to the facility from jail earlier this month, and the videotape of the incident was released today. European Union antitrust regulators raided the Austrian energy company Red Bull on the suspicion that the company is abusing its dominant market share. What In The World?
Bonner General Health hospital in Sandpoint, ID, announced on Friday that it will no longer provide labor, delivery, and a host of other obstetrician services, citing increasing criminalization of physicians and the inability to retain pediatricians as major contributing factors. Bonner General is the only hospital in a 50-mile radius, and the residents of Sandpoint will now be forced to travel for hours to receive this basic and essential care. The hospital’s leadership made a statement saying that the decision to eliminate the obstetrics unit came from the “political climate” in Idaho, which has caused “highly respected, talented physicians” to leave the state entirely. They continued, “The Idaho legislature continues to introduce and pass bills that criminalize physicians for medical care nationally recognized as the standard of care.” The
Dobbs decision legalized a state ban on abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, and Idaho is one of six states that prosecutes doctors for providing the procedure. The Idaho legislature is also terminating its maternal mortality review committee.

The Willow project is a disastrous drilling plan that could produce more than 260 million metric tons of greenhouse gases. That’s a staggering climate impact equivalent to driving 56 million cars or operating nearly 70 coal fired power plants for one year.
Millions of Americans stood up to say no to this climate bomb, putting tremendous pressure on the White House, but Biden approved this project and derailed his own climate goals.
This fight is not in vain and not over. Earthjustice is now taking this fight to the courts.
We are too far along in the climate crisis to approve massive oil and gas projects. To keep from overshooting the 1.5C target of the Paris Agreement, scientists and global bodies including the International Energy Agency say we must halt all new investments in fossil fuel supplies.

The Biden administration has established national monuments in Nevada and Texas and created a marine sanctuary off the coast of Hawaii as part of a slate of conservation actions with the Department of the Interior. Former vice president Mike Pence is struggling to find anyone of any political stripe who likes him. That’s pretty fun.

2023.03.17 14:05 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Rattle Hymn of First Republic by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (03/16/23)
"Antifa should party more, riot less." - Finally some fun in the Fox News chyron!! Straw That Woke The Camel's Back
More bank instability? In this economy?? - Federal regulators working in conjunction with multiple Wall Street lending giants rushed to finalize a plan to stop the bleeding at First Republic Bank and stave off public fears of a 2008 repeat today. Eleven major U.S. banks pledged to infuse $30 billion into First Republic, to stabilize the market after the ripple effects from the Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank failures rattled smaller and regional banks. Regional bank stocks initially fell today but reversed course after reports of the deposit plan became public.
- In a joint statement, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the intervention from the group of large banks “is most welcome, and demonstrates the resilience of the banking system.” Not exactly how I would put it, but sure. Yellen worked closely on the emergency measure with the major bank CEOs and industry regulators, as well as with White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients and White House National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard.
- Yellen also testified at a Senate Banking Committee hearing and defended the Federal government’s response to the collapse of SVB and Signature Bank. She faced questioning from members of both parties on the committee and asserted that the U.S. banking system is sound and that Americans can move forward with the confidence that their deposits are safe. However, she clarified that the emergency actions taken by the government with SVB and Signature bank should not be the industry expectation for all deposits. (I’m sure that’s their takeaway too, most definitely.)
Yellen and other heads of America’s regulatory institutions are in the hot seat for the time being, but Republicans are, as usual, following their own deranged script. - Under questioning from Republicans on the committee, who are feigning outrage corporate malfeasance, Yellen testified that a bank would only receive the kind of emergency assistance seen by SVB and Signature Bank if supermajorities of the boards of the Federal Reserve, the FDIC, and Yellen “in consultation with the president, determine that the failure to protect uninsured depositors would create systemic risk and significant economic and financial consequences.” The decision to intervene with SVB and Signature was necessary, Yellen said, because “the chances of contagion that other banks might be regarded as unsound and suffer runs, seemed extremely high,” and the consequences of such conditions would be swift and very serious. (Sounds like the tech bros tweeting in ALL CAPS about the apocalypse that would ensue if they didn’t get a bailout had their intended effect.)
- Republicans are, of course, also using this opportunity to pin the largest banking failure since 2008 on their favorite boogeyman: “wokeness.” Right-wing trolls on social media and their king, Tucker Carlson, claimed that SVB’s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies “distracted” them from, you know, banking and caused the crash. Yes, this is an argument people are trying to make. Not because of poor investment and risky strategies that depleted their cash stores and made them insolvent in the face of aggressive withdrawals, because of wokeness. Never mind that their executive team is, like most banks, is all White and mostly male! Obviously, there’s no evidence to support these claims, and it was a pretty classic run on the bank, spearheaded by the scourge of wokeness himself, Peter Thiel.
Even conservative economists and analysts agree that the recent spate of bank failures stemmed from bank mismanagement and the recent financial woes of SVB’s tech and startup client base. But trying to misdirect public attention serves their dual purpose of furthering their hollow culture war while fending off the kinds of regulation that would prevent something similar from happening in the future. Great stuff!!
Under The Radar
Move over, George Santos! There’s a new Republican fraudster in the House. Freshman Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) started a GoFundMe years ago, supposedly to raise money for a children’s burial ground, using an image of a stillborn baby on the page, and imploring “Help us help other families.” The page promised a “burial garden” featuring “a life-size statue of Jesus watching over the children” along with benches where families could sit.
He raised almost $25,000. GoFundMe confirmed that Ogles received the money, but the park doesn’t exist, and he won’t say where the money has gone. In fact, he has patently refused to say what he did with the money, and is now naturally portraying himself as the victim,
and released a statement saying that people should believe him that he used the money for the appropriate purposes, despite offering no proof.
What Else?
Special grand jurors in Fulton County, GA, reportedly heard a third recording of a phone call disgraced former president Donald Trump made to a Georgia election official as he tried to overturn his 2020 loss in the state. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said Syria recognizes the territory of Ukraine the Kremlin has unlawfully annexed as Russian, and that Syria would welcome expanding Russia’s military presence there. Dictators are gonna be dictators, I guess!
The Biden administration has called for TikTok’s Chinese ownership to sell the app or face a possible ban, a significant shift for the White House as it moves to address national security concerns about the app. Despite the Kremlin’s denials, the Pentagon released a video of a Russian jet dumping fuel on the U.S. drone that was taken down over the Black Sea earlier this week. French Prime Minister Elizabeth Borne used a special legislative procedure to advance an unpopular pensions bill through the French National Assembly without a vote, spurring calls for her resignation from the country’s parliament. Everyone’s favorite spiritual girlboss from the 2020 Democratic primary and Joe Biden’s sole 2024 challenger Marianne Williamson has been accused by former campaign staffers of abusive treatment replete with “foaming, spitting rage.” My third eye did not see this coming!
What In The World?
Unions representing more than one-million British health-care workers, such as nurses and paramedics, reached a deal Thursday to pause months of strikes, just days after U.K. treasury chief Jeremy Hunt proposed a budget that contemplates paying them a lump-sum bonus this year, and higher compensation next year. Strikes will be halted while members of the union rank-and-file vote on whether to accept the offer, which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (
whose personal wealth is greater than the Royal Family’s) has also endorsed. Thanks for your input, Rishi. The largest trade union in the country, Unite, lambasted the U.K. government for months of “dither and delay” that caused unnecessary hardships to staff and patients and said it would not recommend the deal, but that it supports members voting on it. Wages lagging record inflation is not limited to the health-care sector. Tens of thousands of teachers, civil servants, and workers in London’s subway system all walked off the job Wednesday. U.K. Health Secretary Steve Barclay said the department would look for cost savings and the funding for higher wages would ultimately be up to the Treasury, and would not come at the expense of patients. Imagine that!

Two reproductive health networks, Trust Women and Whole Women’s Health, announced that they will not immediately stop prescribing mifepristone if the Trump-appointed federal judge rules to suspend or invalidate its FDA approval. North Dakota’s state Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision to block a statewide abortion ban, saying that the state’s constitution protects abortion rights in some situations, meaning that the procedure remains legal in the Roughrider State. New polls show that 21 percent of Fox News viewers place less trust in the network since the revelations from the Dominion lawsuit, and 13 percent no longer believe the election was stolen after reading the leaked texts from Fox hosts and executives. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) reportedly once ate pudding with his fingers on a plane. Move over, Amy Klobuchar’s salad comb.

"No signs. Nothing indicating they could not be there." - January 6 insurrectionist lawyer Carol Stewart, talking about people who came in through the Capitol windows Return To Lender
In the wake of Silicon Valley Bank’s collapse, things are feeling a little unstable around these parts! The regulatory response to SVB and Credit Suisse have been prompt and at least temporarily stabilizing, but the confluence of current market conditions make this a vulnerable time. - In times of global financial peril, we are reminded once again that capitalist economic policy and corporate governance, well, it can have some negative consequences! Silicon Valley Bank executives not only gave themselves bonuses as the company was going down in flames on Friday, but they also sold off tens of millions of dollars in company stock over the past two years, raising (pretty obvious!!) questions about insider trading. SVB’s CEO Greg Becker sold almost $30 million of stock over the past two years, and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) called on him to return the money to depositors. Yes I’m sure he will do the right thing!!
- The Securities Exchange Commission recently created new rules to increase disclosure, transparency, and timelines for scheduled stock sell-offs, in order to weed out this kind of impropriety. Under the new rules, Becker’s sales would not have been allowed. Cool cool cool!! SVB was the go-to bank for many startups, but it also housed a great deal of cryptocurrency money. So the federal government is now insuring investments over the $250,000 limit even for those who invested big in an unregulated currency. After a huge crash and months of poor performance, cryptocurrency rallied on monday after the lowercase-b bailout. Seems bad to me!
Abuses in the financial sector are like guns: they’re ubiquitous in America, they cause catastrophic harm to millions of people, and the government refuses to regulate them. Look No Further Than Crooked Media

As the craven Trump-appointed Texas judge weighs whether or not to invalidate the FDA’s long-standing approval of mifepristone, the most widely-used medication to terminate pregnancy, it’s clear that the worst of what we feared after the fall of Roe may be yet to come. Republicans in South Carolina are pushing legislation that would make any person who has an abortion subject to the state’s homicide laws, which are punishable by death. The bill is called the “South Carolina Prenatal Equal Protection Act” and describes anything from an embryo with a handful of cells up to a fully gestated baby as a “person.” South Carolina law hands down death penalty sentences or minimum sentences of 30 years in prison to people convicted of murder. The measure includes no exceptions for rape or incest. Over a dozen Republican lawmakers have co-sponsored the bill. South Carolina hasn’t acted on the measure yet, but Republicans hold control of both houses of the state legislature and the governorship. Thank you once again to everyone who told women they were “exaggerating” about what Republicans would do in a post-
Roe world!

Investigators in Fulton County, GA, reportedly have another audio recording of a phone call from disgraced former president Donald Trump—this one to the Georgia Speaker of the House—in which he attempted to toss out Joe Biden’s victory in the state. In other Trump criminal proceedings, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen wrapped up his second day of testimony before a New York grand jury regarding the “alleged” hush money payment Cohen made at Trump’s behest to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Daniels met with Manhattan prosecutors today.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) revoked the Hyatt Regency Miami hotel’s liquor license because it hosted “A Drag Queen Christmas.” Speaking of Meatball Ron, allies of disgraced former president Donald Trump have filed a complaint with the Florida Commission on Ethics accusing DeSantis of violating campaign-finance and ethics rules as he continues his shadow run for the GOP presidential nomination without formally declaring his candidacy. Sens. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Ted Budd (R-NC) introduced a bill to mandate tracking systems on weather and research balloons so the U.S. military can chill the hell out. State officials in Texas announced a takeover of Houston’s public school district, home to over 200,000 students, in a move Democrats say is a politically motivated exertion of control by the administration of Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) over the increasingly blue city. Honda recalled 500,000 cars in the United States and Canada due to a problem with the front seat belts. Elon Musk would never.

Something strange is happening on Pennsylvania Avenue, and it’s not Joe Biden ordering ice cream deliveries in the winter. A slew of real estate sales have occurred two blocks east of the Capitol building, and the properties have a common buyer: allies of disgraced former president Donald Trump. The Conservative Partnership Institute, a nonprofit (sure)
led by Trump’s former chief of staff Mark Meadows, bought a total of $41 million in properties just steps from the Capitol, and in the organization’s annual report, CPI announced that its aim is to transform that particular swath of real estate into a sort of MAGA campus it calls “Patriots’ Row.” Republicans are always going on about their disdain for DC and how it is run so it’s interesting that they are taking somewhat clandestine measures to buy up large swaths of it! It’s also borderline unprecedented for a nonprofit to purchase so many properties (nine in the past year!) in such a close proximity (on one street) in such a short period of time. Pro-insurrectionists having headquarters right next to the Capitol doesn’t feel great! FBI, u up?

"Since he... stopped having lunch with white supremacists... this is the most disciplined I've ever seen him." - Brian Kilmeade touting the high standards Fox News has for its endorsed candidates Do(?) Fear The Reaper
Russia’s war in Ukraine has been stymied by a strong coalition of Western support for Ukraine, but a Tuesday incident has brought the United States as close as they’ve come to direct conflict. - Russian fighter jets downed an American surveillance drone as it made its way over the Black Sea today, according to U.S. military officials. One of the Russian jets collided with the drone’s propeller after both aircrafts dumped fuel on it. This prompted the U.S. Air Force to bring the MQ-9 Reaper down in international waters, and called the incident part of a “pattern of dangerous actions by Russian pilots.” Officials said the actions of Russian aircrafts were “reckless and environmentally unsound,” and that such provocations could lead to “miscalculation and unintended escalation,” between the two countries.
- These are the most serious hostilities between the United States and Russia since the war in Ukraine began. The United States and NATO have provided billions of dollars in aid, weapons, and intelligence to Ukraine, but deny what the Kremlin characterizes as a Western conspiracy to destroy Russia. And this is the first time during the war that Russia has destroyed military-surveillance equipment that was under U.S. (as opposed to Ukrainian) control.
- The Russian Defense Ministry denied striking the MQ-9, and blamed the “sharp maneuvering” of the unmanned drone for the crash, and further claimed that Russian jets did not make contact. Nevertheless, U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters that senior officials would be in contact with their Russian counterparts to relay “our strong objections.” Western geopolitical analysts have described the incident as thus far unprecedented, though fortunately the two countries are responding diplomatically—after Price’s comments, the U.S. officially summoned the Russian ambassador, which is diplomacy-speak for “we’re really pissed about it.”
It increasingly appears that regular citizens of Russia are not feeling the consequences of the war at home. - Western sanctions have impacted Russia’s banks, technology imports, and Russia’s famed population of wealthy oligarchs, but have not had the intended effect of fomenting public discontent with the war. The Russian economy is largely holding up, and doesn’t look markedly different than it did before the war began. All of that might change, however, now that sanctions are finally falling on Russia’s central cash cow: oil. Sanctions on Russian fossil fuels could deplete the resources funding the Kremlin’s attacks on Ukraine, and some economists predict that signs of true economic strain will emerge in the coming months.
- Other economists, however, say that the Kremlin has plentiful reserves of money that haven’t and most likely won’t be hit by sanctions, and its new trade partners in Asia will help Moscow continue to stay afloat. There’s also the issue that though 1,300 corporations have left Russia or are working to do so, another 1,600 or more are either staying or pulling a wait-and-see. Russia enjoyed record fossil-fuel profits last year, and even cutting its revenue by one-third, as sanctions are intended to, wouldn’t lead to a crash. Rich Russians are still rich, and many of them are fleeing to Dubai, as the UAE has maintained direct flights to Russia throughout the conflict and staked out a neutral, “apolitical” posture on the war.
When Russian President Vladimir Putin began conscripting Russian nationals to fight his war, there was fleeting hope that perhaps the thousands of men who fled the country in defiance of the draft would foil his plans. Time and again, hopes of the war resolving itself quickly or in a predictable fashion have proven idealistic.

Under The Radar
Inflation eased slightly again in February (though it remains high), but the whole “collapse of multiple major banks” thing has drawn renewed scrutiny to the Federal Reserve’s aggressive interest-rate hikes. Nevertheless, the Fed is still expected to raise interest rates 0.25 percent next week, and then again in May. In the wake of the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank over the weekend,
the Fed and other regulatory agencies are seeking to shore up confidence in the American banking system. One option would be to slow the pace of rate increases in tandem with the slowing pace of inflation, while letting banks run by reckless executives fail without bailouts—a morally just option that would also be anti-inflationary. But Fed Chairman Jay Powell et al seem inclined to do the reverse.. The U.S. economy is in something of a straight jacket: Inflation has decreased but still remains too high, while the labor market remains strong but still vulnerable to more interest rate increases.
And for now at least, American consumers still feel the pinch of higher prices. What Else?
The state of Ohio has sued Norfolk Southern after the disastrous train derailment and resulting environmental damages. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) called Russia’s war in Ukraine a “territorial dispute,” and claims it should not be considered a top national security interest for the United States, in his effort to win the pro-Kremlin/Tucker Carlson primary. Thanks for your input, Meatball Ron!
Facebook parent company Meta officially announced it will lay off another 10,000 employees this week. Disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) may mount a primary challenge against Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). It’s almost like this guy doesn’t understand that no means no!
A California appellate court reversed most of a ruling that had invalidated Proposition 22, the state’s law allowing Uber, Lyft, and other gig economy companies to classify their workers as independent contractors rather than employees entitled to benefits and other protections. The EPA proposed the first federal limits on “forever chemicals” in drinking water on Tuesday, a measure the agency said will save thousands of lives and prevent serious illnesses including cancer. Wellesley College in Massachusetts held a student referendum today to decide whether the school will admit transgender applicants including trans men. It should be noted that Mount Holyoke, another historic women’s college, decided to admit trans and nonbinary students back in 2014 without much controversy!
Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has officially filed paperwork declaring his 2024 candidacy and we simply…have to laugh!

Australia will once again prohibit Indigenous people in “prescribed areas” from purchasing or possessing alcohol, after trying the “equal rights” thing for a few months. Like many Western governments founded by White colonizers (hello), Australian officials have publicly wrestled with the country’s relationship to Indigenous communities in recent years. And not just the actions of their ancestors, but their own actions. Back in 2007,
the Australian government banned alcohol in prescribed areas, and imposed other race-based restrictions on Indigenous Australians. The alcohol ban lapsed last year amid complaints from hundreds of Aboriginal communities that the policy was racist. But now a new uptick in crime in surrounding areas has revived the bad old times of 2022, as the government apparently found no other way to reduce crime in the past 15 years. The resurrected alcohol bans have coincided with another politically charged moment, as the country begins to discuss amending the Australian constitution to enshrine an Indigenous body to advise on policies that affect Aboriginal communities. Decades of race-based, paternalistic policies imposed by White Australian officials over Aboriginal communities, which are largely impoverished due to decades of discriminatory policies, have left many Aboriginal people feeling hopeless. The 2007 ban did not solve any of the underlying issues in Aboriginal communities, and many argue that there is little reason to expect reinstating it will serve as anything other than a bandaid, and a renewed source of stigma.

President Biden issued an executive order today reinforcing background checks for gun buyers, a policy the White House is promoting as the most comprehensive action a president can take without new legislation. Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) signed a law Monday that will make Illinois one of three states to require employers to offer paid time off for any reason, based on hours worked, as long as appropriate notice is given. Novo Nordisk is set to cut U.S. insulin list prices by 75 percent, thanks to Joe Biden and one of the most successful uses of the president’s bully pulpit in recent memory. Enjoy

2023.03.14 14:36 kittehgoesmeow What A Day: Sting Like An SVB by Julia Claire & Crooked Media (03/13/23)
"The way you know that people like you is if they're making fun of you." - Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), guy who people definitely like!! Ban(k) On The Run
Is it just me, or is it starting to feel a little 2008 in here? - The Federal Reserve announced Monday that it will review its supervision of Silicon Valley Bank after it collapsed over the weekend in the second-largest American bank failure on record. SVB crashed after a bank run (when a larger portion of clients withdraw money at the same time because they believe the bank is in danger of failing), and now the government is pulling emergency levers to backstop uninsured depositors, and President Biden is assuring Americans that the money they keep in the nation’s other banks is safe.
- SVB was the largest bank failure since Washington Mutual went under in 2008. So what the hell happened? SVB held assets for a thick slice of the tech and startup industry, as its name would suggest. It also invested its holdings in long-term bonds, as if it anticipated years of extremely low short-term rates would continue forever. But the tech sector has had a rocky few months full of extensive layoffs, just as the rest of the economy was running hot, and the Fed was raising rates. Many of SVB’s clients thus needed more cash over the past year than before, so they began withdrawing their deposits, forcing the bank to sell a large portion of its bonds at a considerable loss. As word of the impending emergency spread, more clients withdrew their deposits, and there’s the run.
- On Sunday, the Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation collectively decided to guarantee all deposits at SVB as well as New York’s Signature Bank, which was also seized on Sunday. That is—the regulators guaranteed all deposits above and beyond the $250,000 limit on insured deposits. Student loan borrowers and people with medical debt everywhere are saying: “How do we get some of that??” All three agencies and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen moved quickly to assure Americans that “no losses associated with the resolution of Silicon Valley Bank will be borne by the taxpayer.”
Okay great, we’re all feeling very confident!! - If there’s one person we can count on to be hopping mad about a banking issue, it’s Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and boy is she. Warren wrote an op-ed for the New York Times and laid the blame for this most recent bank failure directly at the feet of “leaders in Washington weakening the financial rules.” After the 2008 financial crisis, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Act, which was aimed at improving accountability and transparency in the American financial system and rein in the “too big to fail” banks. Obviously, Wall Street hated this law and wanted its unlimited runway back as soon as possible. It spent millions of dollars lobbying the FDIC and Congress trying to defeat it, and then when that failed, trying to weaken it. In fact, two former senior aides to House Speaker Mr. “No blank checks” Kevin McCarthy went on to become SVB’s top lobbyists in this effort. McCarthy himself and countless other Republican lawmakers pushed for the repeal of significant pieces of Dodd-Frank. Disgraced former president Donald Trump signed a partial repeal of Dodd-Frank into law in 2018. (This astute cartoon captures the origins of multiple recent national crises in a single cell.)
- Yellen also went on to assert that this is “not a bailout” but it certainly walks and talks like a bailout! Bank stocks around the world plunged today, losing about $90 billion in value, even as President Biden pledged to take any actions needed to ensure the safety of the U.S. banking system following the emergency measures deployed by the nation’s fiduciary institutions. The strong measures are meant to restore confidence and prevent further banking failures, but it’s not entirely guaranteed.
So what have we learned since 2008? Not enough, apparently! Silicon Valley Bank was poorly supervised thanks to regulatory rollbacks, and employed a risky strategy that maximized short-term profits but made it vulnerable to this exact scenario. Just like in 2008,
we watched SVB hand out bonuses to their executives mere hours before the government takeover. How many times will we have to watch the economy brought to the brink of collapse by greedy, nefarious financial actors before elected officials understand that deregulation will always end in disaster?

Under The Radar
Trump-appointed federal judge Matthew Kacsmaryk has been on a tear during the Biden administration, knocking down workplace protections for transgender Americans, agreeing to hear a case brought by anti-vaxxers against major news organizations for not publishing anti-vaxx misinformation, and ruling against the Biden administration on immigration in cases so shoddy even the ultraconservative Supreme Court picked his work apart. His reputation for right-wing hackery has driven many hackish right-wing organizations to file lawsuits specifically in his district, anticipating friendly rulings from Kacsmaryk, then a review from the similarly right-wing Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and then the conservative majority in the Supreme Court.
That’s exactly what an anti-abortion group did when it decided to challenge the FDA’s approval of the abortion medication mifepristone,…20 years after the fact. Experts expected Kacsmaryk to side with the anti-abortion groups no matter what, and then. But weeks after the last briefs were submitted, he still hasn’t ruled, and it appears that he is conducting his review more or less in secret. After being accused of this secrecy,
Kacsmaryk ordered oral arguments in the case to take place on Wednesday morning, according to a new court filing. The FDA has strongly disputed the anti-abortion group’s claims and argued that pulling mifepristone from the market should its approval be nullified would not only put women’s health at risk, it would also weaken the FDA’s authority. Mifepristone is used in about half of all U.S. abortions.
What Else?
After signing the single-largest piece of climate legislation in American history, the Biden administration is planning to wave through a mammoth $8 billion oil drilling project in the North Slope of Alaska. Not great!
Speaking of climate change, the head of the United Nations today called for scientists to deliver “cold, hard facts” in order to spur governments to make substantive policies to curb the damage before the point of no return. In defense of the scientists, they’re the ones who have been holding up their end of the deal!
The International Criminal Court plans to seek criminal arrests of Russian officials who forcibly deported children from Ukraine and targeted civilian infrastructure, the first ICC case involving Russia’s war on Ukraine. U.S. Treasury Department and Justice Department officials are seeking new ways to liquidate the assets of Russian oligarchs. Former Vice President Mike Pence issued his harshest criticism of disgraced former president Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection, saying that he “was wrong,” to try to overturn the election (you think??) and that “his reckless words endangered my family…” He nevertheless refused to testify before the House January 6 Committee and has challenged a subpoena to testify before the grand jury investigating Trump’s role in January 6.
The Colorado state Republican Party selected rabid election denier, former state representative Dave Williams, as its new leader this weekend. State lawmakers in Nevada may allow the water agency that manages the Colorado River supply for Las Vegas to drastically limit residential water use. The good news is, we may finally see a crackdown on the ultra-wealthy for their overuse of water! Stop trying to have a lawn in the desert you freaks!!
Speaking of disgraced former president Trump, he does not plan to testify in the New York State grand jury investigation into his “alleged” (wink) hush money compensation to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. Be Smarter
Fox News has had a rough couple of weeks (haha!) thanks to revelations from a defamation lawsuit brought against them by Dominion Voting Systems. But an even bigger lawsuit against Fox is looming. Fox’s efforts to get the case dismissed have thus far not been successful. Smartmatic claims Fox hosts and guests made over 100 false statements regarding the 2020 election (seems like a conservative estimate!) and that Fox falsely claimed Smartmatic was involved in tallying 2020 election results in six battleground states. Fox also alleged that Smartmatic shared its technology with Dominion, when the two companies are in fact rivals and have no communication with each other. Probably the wildest claim Fox made is that Smartmatic was founded in Venezuela, sanctioned by corrupt dictators, when the company was actually founded in Boca Raton, FL, in 2000 in the wake of the “hanging chad” nightmare, aimed at using technology to restore the public’s faith in election results. Imagine that.

2023.03.13 14:55 hammer_header Melio Fallout Silicon Valley Bank
I’m a small contractor and a client paid me through Melio. It has now been a week since the client made the payment, and 4 days past when Melio said the payment would be in my account. I have filed two support claims that have gone unanswered, and live chat is still not online, an hour past its advertised opening time. Getting nervous, I looked up Silicon Valley Bank, and sure enough, Melio is listed as a client on their homepage. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there any way to contact them outside of their non-existent live chat function?
