2023.06.03 04:25 Laymaker Strategies to Increase Revenue at an Existing Airbnb
Borrowing an old consulting prompt from another industry, if you were brought in as a consultant at an existing Airbnb, how would you increase revenue 20% without spending any money?
No cost to implement: 1.. Fix underpricing. Common forms of underpricing include the following:
- Selling short-term blocs like weekends which sabotage full-week value in prime seasons
- Over-pricing far-horizon dates and missing early-bird premiums, then reducing to below the potential early-bird value as dates near
- Achieving incorrect pricing/occupancy/cleaning cost structure balance
2.. Fix underutilization of beds. Incentivize lower cost-per-guest, higher total cost reservations. Larger groups are willing to pay more and your current pricing structure may be unbalanced towards singles/couples. Raise total per-reservation pricing by lowering extra guest fees and raising base nightly prices by more than the difference in monthly average extra guest fees received. For example, if your listing supports 6 guests and your current extra guest fee is $20 per night per “extra” guest (e.g. any guest beyond the first two) and, on average, you collect $300 in extra guest fees per month, you are averaging $10 per night in extra guest fees. Your listing is likely underutilized as you are only hosting an average of just over 2 guests when there are plenty of groups of 3,4,5,6 travelling who are willing to pay more in total than couples are. If you lower your extra guest fee to $0 and raise your base rates to Current Base Rate+$15 and see no decline in bookings (but likely an increase in average number of guests per reservation) then you will raise revenue significantly. If you find yourself having very low bed utilization, you are likely not optimally balancing the extra guest fee vs higher base price.
3.. Create event pricing. Research the event calendar for your area to determine which dates should be priced more highly due to specific concerts, conventions, sporting events, etc in your area. Note occasions in the previous calendar year when certain weekends were booked very far in advance and you likely left money on the table with inadvertent underpricing.
4.. Add listing to other platforms (VRBO/corporate housing/furnished finder) either to increase occupancy (if occupancy is below 100%) or just use a pricing adder of Airbnb pricing plus adder and any bookings from these sources are bonus revenue.
5.. Listing optimization. Improve the listing’s editable details with a focus on only the details that are most important for traffic and bookings/conversions (
discussion here):
- Cover photo
- “Filtering amenities” like allowing more guests, pets, smoking, infants
6.. Restart broken listing. If reviews are under 4.85 or historic conversion patterns seem to have permanently affected the Airbnb ranking algorithm, delete and re-create the listing from scratch. Read about ways to properly perform this tactic online to avoid getting into trouble with Airbnb.
7.. Add required mid-reservation cleaning for long-term stays, with additional cleaning fee.
8.. Add early/late check out fees (e.g. $20 for one hour, limit 2) and advise guests of these terms when they request early/late checks.
9.. Create a separate partial listing for the property. For example, if the main listing is a 3bd2ba house, you can create a separate listing that is a 2bd+office listing completely dedicated to attracting remote work guests. You can sync the calendars so that no overlapping bookings occur. If you are already at 100% occupancy with the existing listing then make the new listing at a bonus price. Use a cover photo that represents completely different feature from the main/original listing so that you can attract a secondary demographic with the new listing (such as remote workers). The difference in listings can be completely artificial and just an excuse to have two listings, or can be real (such as switching out a bed for an office desk when the remote work listing gets booked, in that example you would likely have one-week minimum length-of-stay to make it worth the effort).
Costs money to implement: 10.. Property changes (in ranked order):
- Add additional beds (bunk beds in a room, portable rollout beds that can be used in living room, sleeper sofa, two singles if a room currently has one, etc.)
- Spend money on new photos with specific focus on the prospective cover photo including re-arranging furniture specifically to make this photo as appealing as possible
- Visually pump the listing with new décor, the easiest options being wall papers and inexpensive but sophisticated lighting fixtures such as bedside sconces and chandeliers
- Add “non-filtering amenities” such as a desk, outdoor seating, stuff that appeals to larger groups

No amount of ice water is helping and my mom won't turn othe AC for some reason. Fans just blow more hot air. I don't want nightly sensory overloads bc of something I can't control. Any tips? /genq

2023.06.03 04:08 WombatCum Coincidence?
So as some may know, in the opening credits there is a news paper with Abbeville, South Carolina so I’m going to assume that’s the location of Fromville.
I am really intrigued with the theory of the monsters becoming monsters due to a nuclear like incident. The whole idea of them living underground and their stuff being down there honestly makes a lot of sense with this theory. Back in the 1950s, the Air Force dropped a nuke on a small town which injured 6 civilians and damaged 7 buildings. Although there wasn’t a nuclear fission core so there wasn’t any radiation, the story still can be tweaked a little to make it more interesting. I’m not totally set on this, I just found it interesting. Another interesting thing I found was the first shots of the civil war happened in South Carolina so maybe that’s relevant somehow since we saw a civil war soldier. Does the history of South Carolina hold a key? Probably not but it’s still interesting. Me personally, I think Fromville is about time more than anything. I like the pocket universe theory way more than the anything because it deals with space and time

2023.06.03 03:58 NEK0SAM Players complain about everything (Online table)
We’ve been playing two years, and I got out as DM because nobody else could, nor had creative energy to do so. Our party has some inner conflict and backchat between two players, which we’re working on fixing but they’re two different play styles all together to clash a lot. Our party is a mess, nobody ever says thanks or offers any advice on what to do better, but I’ve been assured that what I’m doing is fine, it’s just the people who complain are just the type who will do so about anything.
We’ve got- 1) problem player Critical Role fanboy-min/maxer with MC syndrome (party have said he’s a worse version of Tiberius…and he is, we’re working on fixing him, we’ve spoke to him about his attitude and way he plays, he may be kicked from group soon if he doesn’t fix it).
2) serial complainer who complains for sake of it and hates close to everything player 1 and 3 do. (Always complains about anything, be it combat length, lack of progress due to player interactions, derailment, random crap that comes up)
3) Person who doesn’t pay attention because he just…zones out and has NO idea on what’s going on 75% of the time (he admits he does this, it’s not just DnD he does it it, he does it in conversations irl too, you can speak to him and he just mentally wanders mid conversation). Also complains about random little things and won’t shut up about them for 30 minutes and then goes back to not paying attention again e.g. VTT is top down, he was told something was 20 feet above him, proceeded to complain about how unclear map was when it was actually made very clear and EVERYONE else could see it and being verbally told. most likely didn’t know because of not paying attention.
4) Good RP’er, just doesn’t listen to what’s going on (more invested than player 3, he has autism and tends to get distracted by any little thing)
5) The chill guy whose just happy to be there and play.
We had 6) The no show/last minute canceller but they left.
As you can probably gather 1-3 are freaking difficult to deal with. I’ve brought up with them all individually and together about their complaining, and have always said I’m open to feedback, but they won’t give any and more or less say “yeah well we have no idea how to fix it anyways, that’s your job”.
Number 5 I’ve spoken to about the whole thing the most and he’s more or less just said “frankly, just ignore them. You’re doing way better than any of us could in the DM chair, we’re having fun just they won’t say it”.
I’m aware they’re enjoying the campaign but jeez every week it’s a new complaint, be it about each other, something not going as they planned (they don’t blame me for this, usually each other).
I’ve sat them down and asked them to throw me a bone but nobody does apart from on maybe one occasion to make “boss mechanics” more visible for those that have it, as I occasionally run a “raid boss-esq” in-combat puzzle with some fights, i have done this and player 1 complained because they couldn’t “brute force it” and had to think instead of just kill. Player 4 worked out the solution and was berated by player 1 because “DnD shouldn’t be about thinking”.
Do I just let them complain?
I’m aware the group is a mess playstyle wise and they don’t all jam together, but we’re all buddies enjoying a game. I have another group I run a similar campaign for but it’s nowhere near as much chaos as they’re all on similar wave length.

2023.06.03 03:54 Ed_Derick_ Star Wars: The Force Awakens Review. It's... alright? I guess?
Hey it's me again. Decided to give it a try to the dreaded, Disney Trilogy. Already saw lots of memes and thumbnails about how bad it is, but I was like "Ok lemme see it for myself so I can formulate my own opinion". So here it is.
I got mixed feelings when the credits started rolling. So as your average reboot/sequel to a franchise, it tries to milk your nostalgia. References, classic soundtrack, parallels with the classics. The plot is clearly New Hope inspired. But with changes of course.
Droid is carrying super important information for the rebellion. First it was the weakness of the Death Star, now it's the location of Luke Skywalker, who has vanished. The second I read that in the opening crawl I had to pause. It's literally the first sentence in the crawl. "Luke Skywalker has vanished". And I'm like "Wow, this is how you start your reboot, the titular beloved character has vanished? Come on..."
But of course I kept watching. And I gotta say, I got hooked on the visuals of this. It's vibrant but not too saturated, it's pleasing to the eyes. I can see some shots being wallpaper worthy. Action sequences are good too. Just like my experience with Rogue One, it feels good to watch Star Wars with "modern graphics." (However, Rogue One's cinematography is still superior in my opinion).
Anyway, so we have this "First Order", which just sounds like The Empire with a different name. Almost like a bootleg, their colors are similar but not the same. You got Snoke, your bootleg Emperor Palpatine, you got Kylo Ren, your bootleg Vader. "Jedi who was being trained by a Master but got corrupted by a Sith Lord", same deal as Anakin, just replace Obi Wan with Luke and Palpatine with Snoke. They have a Death Star, except it's bigger now and can target multiple planets. And just like before it has a specific weakness.
I actually liked the idea of a stormtrooper rebelling against the Empire/First Order, so I was immediately invested in Finn's character. Though, I can't pin point what it is at the moment, didn't liked him as much throughout the movie. Kylo Ren's introduction was nice. Catching a laser in mid-air and just leaving it there until the end of the scene caught me off guard. I was like "Woah! Is that thing now? Another Force Trick?" But like I already said, he feels like a Vader bootleg, which I guess the movie is self-aware about it. I find it weird how he uses this mask just to modify his voice, to make it deeper, it's kinda funny. So what, is he insecure about his voice so he wears this thing to make it deeper?
Sounds a lot less cool than having your voice modified because you got so many cybernetic enhancements that you are practically a robot now.
Moving on, I'll try not to linger too much. Then we have Rey. And she's a bit weird. Because she just gets stuff. She knows how to do a Jedi mind-trick, without anyone teaching her, and without using her hands, which by the way I haven't seen anyone do this before without the hand movement so yeah that feels contrived/forced. And she can fight back against Kylo's mind-reading and even read his mind too. She's special because protagonism I guess. Luke's saber is calling to her, which I guess a thing light sabers can do now, as well as showing the future and the past. And she wins against Kylo Ren in a lightsaber duel despite never holding a lightsaber before. Okay?
Then the movie brings the legacy characters, Han, Chewie, Leia, it inevitably warms my heart. It was fun. Until they decide to kill Han. Yeah that was heartbreaking. Despite the re-used thing of "Vader killed Anakin", it was still a powerful, emotional moment, and Han Solo's death got me tear-eyed, but also mad at the movie. And mad at how his death was just glossed over. No funeral, no kind words or anything. Movie just moves on.
Sorry but I'm gonna have to end this post soon, I could probably write pages and pages and do a scene-by-scene breakdown but it would be too much for you guys.
So I'll just sum it up. The aesthetics of the movie are fine. Good visuals, good CGI (maybe a few moments of bad green screen), it feels like Star Wars, and they use some practical effects in some places, it's done well just like the good ol' days. It's nice to see the legacy characters back, bad move to kill Solo in your first entry. Kylo Ren feels a failed attempt at recreating Vader, The Script is with Rey, not The Force, Snoke doesn't come near to Palpatine, I have no idea why The First Order has that name, Finn is a cool character concept but something's wrong with him I can't figure out. Also the humor has its ups and downs. Movie is fine. 6/10.
On a last note, Luke doesn't look well in the end. He looks like a sad, broken man, someone get him a therapist!

2023.06.03 03:54 CloneNumber1 Advice on building new gaming pc
Hello, fellow Redditors!
I'm in the process of building a new PC (my current is 7-8 years old now), and I could really use some guidance and suggestions. I've done some research, but there are so many options and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I mostly use my PC for gaming and browsing the internet. I'm based in Australia and my budget is around $4000 AUD.
Here's what I have in mind:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 (want to stick with rad for noise reasons)
Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX
RAM: ----Unsure---- 32GB DDR5 (has to be low enough for the air cooler)
Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB (Boot Drive), reusing current 2.5 SSD and 3.5 HDD
GPU: MSI SUPRIM X GeForce RTX 4080 (Still unsure)
Case: Mid-Tower, something with good cable management and great airflow. Corsair iCUE 4000X seemed good but unsure if it will fit the rad.
Power: Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold
I have a fair understanding of PC components but would appreciate any advice on compatibility, performance, and potential bottlenecks. Feel free to suggest alternative components if you think they would better suit my needs. Nothing has been bought yet so by all means change any/all of it.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me out.

2023.06.03 03:54 RealBenjaminKerry Hybridization: The gravitational effect of foreign analysis material upon Chinese discourse over Ukraine War
The first essay In the previous post, I have discussed about the skirmishes on all corners of the internet, the systematic destruction of idea by algorithms, and the apocalyptic wasteland that is the Chinese internet. All were discussed in the last post, however, one thing was neglected from the picture: the “eldritch influence“.
In the first post, I have mentioned an intensive effort launched by RT and CCP to shape the narrative in favor of the invasion. However, as previously mentioned, due to a myriad of reasons, the entire effort lays to waste in the lone and level sands that stretch far away. They have abandoned their old way of setting up positions on RT's main channel and their Donbass offshoot "Donbass Today". In fact, back then DPR was extremely successful in their propaganda machine before Belgorod attacks. The amount of DPR lies actually made me lost my shit multiple times. You would never want to know what ideas I had to deal with the people of Donbass, in fact it almost becomes a rage trigger to me. Despite that, the pro-Russians stragglers are still there, and they are adapting. Nobody has declared surrender yet, so the war will just drag on, as Clausewitz has observed. Many of them are now operating purely out of spite, resembling the worst of the trolls in the west and their rhetoric began to be more similar to their twitter counterpart. Meanwhile, the Russian influence campaign is still ongoing in a more insidious and covert way. The internet arguments become more like
UkraineRussiaReport than
RussianWarFootage. The main focus of Russian influence campaign seems to be dedicated to creating artificial disinfolklores and some
legitimately weird channels showcasing how good life is in occupied Mariupol. Sometimes pro-Ukraine content creators will be subjected to mass report and get banned, but most of times they have a backup account to minimize damage.
As previously mentioned, the Chinese domestic "analysts", one being pro-Russia and the other being pro-Ukraine, both ended up being noncredible, with one being Chinese Chuck Pfarrer and the other making schizo claims like Zaluzhnyi has intimate relationship with several female service members (is this supposed to make him look bad?) Of course, people began to adapt. On the pro-Ukraine side, there is now a guy called "Regent Taboritsky" (
塔博里茨基摄政王 yes, this is a TNO reference). He was formerly a pro-Russian who use Artermovisk but has changed to the Ukrainian side. Meanwhile, other "analysts" has also underwent evolution. (ignore the next two paragraphs if you just want to read noncredible)
Do you remember the TNO reference? Why does Chinese also know about that? Actually, it shaped all Chinese political discourse. Chinese internet is a wasteland at best, years of censorship and bitter warfare has drained the land of creativity and independent thought. Many of the counterculture guys who I refer as PANOP (pan-opposition, an umbrella term for modern anti-establishment Chinese) are actually pro-regime folks who ended up graduating from college and have to work 12 hours a day. Despite having changed side, they are actually just the same, same mindlessness and malice, nothing more, nothing less. Meanwhile, censorship algorithms have systematically salted the earth, so that no organized ideology apart from the official one can be present. These efforts are eventually made futile thanks to one man - JREG (yes, you can trust your eyes). His political compass memes successfully provided the PANOPs with enough munition to blow up the internet. Eventually everything related to him got censored, but then TNO was there, the weapons are now everywhere, no amount of salt would ever stop them again. It's like the wars in Japan that lead to Edo period in many regards, battles with salvaged foreign ideas and memes where getting hold of foreign material becomes an immense power multiplier.
In fact, I have a very derogatory comparison for Chinese internet's relationship to the global one: the anaerobic tank of a sewage treatment plant. The worst crap of 4chan and beyond sedimented into the Chinese one, just like how the large excrement particles sedimented into the anaerobic tank after the initial aerobic respiration, and our netizens feasted on it like bacteria feasted on the fresh excrements. (my knowledge of sewage treatment comes from IGCSE biology, so it might be inaccurate). One of the most terrifying case of how this can influence Chinese internet was the alt-righters in '16. Actually, the largest case of the great meme war spillover was in China. During that time, everyone was fuming about Baizuo, the Chinese equivalent of SJW, while some others do stand for Bernie, most are taking up Great Replacement Theory and mocking Trans ideology. Many began to take Breivik as a hero and claim refugees are swarming Europe. Pizzagate was also a widespread meme back then. This exposure left a mark in the Chinese internet culture, which partially contributed to the recent surge in antisemitism in '23. To be honest with you all, after spending years on Chinese internet, I just can't stand regular Chinese netizen calling Azov guys neo-Nazi, they should look into the nearest mirror.
The hybridization described above then contributes to a new evolution of Chinese online discourse over the Ukraine war. Chinese posters are expert trolls and partisans, but they have a fundamental lack of first hand knowledge regarding war in Ukraine. Thus, contact with foreign sources becomes essential. On Zhihu, there are several accounts that have access to twitter OSINT accounts (accounts that are highly regarded by professionals). The most notable being
Ducling, who have been a staunch pro-Ukraine guy with liberal tendency. He made a
reference to Emil Kastehelmi:"The Russian 'Special Military Operation' is getting increasingly special, even after day 453" for an question about the Belgorod attack. He also made a cope compilation (the most favored tactic of Chinese pro-Ukraine accounts, known as 合订本, that collects all the past pro-Russian claims as a method of discrediting the pro-Russians. Often with great effect )
of claims surrounding Bakhmut. For people who can't understand the information presented, Chinese internet slang was often designed to evade censorship and is highly informal, so you shouldn't understand it at all. There's another OSINT guy called Suyi控, who made the
best analysis of the Discord files ever. Chinese OSINT guys tend to have a boner for Syrskyi, me included. Memelords have also adopted some stuff from twitter, I remember seeing the Putin attending Nuremburg escorted by fellas wearing MP uniforms on the profile on one of the accounts. At the same time, there are also pro-Russians who use the John McBurgers of Ohio oblast under Zelensky's tweet as proof of Ukraine is losing. This tactic can be incredibly effective due to confirmation bias, and in many cases RT have used the exact same material to propagandize both Chinese and Americans.
Bilibili, due to the limitations mentioned in the first article, relies on cruder extraction. There is a guy called Deepstate-carry (
Deepstate-搬运) who basically cargo-cult through deepstatemap's telegram. In my opinion, the best combat footages come from a guy called Okken sight (
欧肯视线), who is a true neutral source regarding combat footage, he contain a slight Russian bias but his videos are neutral, which led to him being criticized by both pro-Russians and pro-Ukrainians. I'd recommend folks on this sub who drank too much pro-Ukraine vranyo to be tied on a chair forced to watch his videos of both Russian and Ukrainian combat losses to remove overt bias and complacency. Meanwhile there are other pro-Ukrainian accounts such as CarlPacho (
卡尔帕乔) who uploads Ukrainian combat footages and is a pro-Ukraine guy himself, recently he got banned but he's got a backup account. Meanwhile there are people translating Battle Order's videos, such as a guy called
101eagle and a guy who's called Marine rifleman (
四等人的步枪兵). On Bilibili the materials used are often of inferior quality such a a gal doing analysis who is called frosty leaves of a thousand spring (千秋霜叶), her sources include Weeb Union (HistoryLegends' pal) and Chuck Pfarrer. She's pro-Ukraine by the way.
Now we have talked through all the developments of the pro-Ukraine side, let's face the pro-Russian abyss. As mentioned before, Bilibili has access to inferior foreign materials. Meanwhile pro-Russians coopt the pro-Russian war blogger model. The most notorious model being a guy known as SnailColgiweibo (
蜗牛柯基weibo) who is basically a Rybar copycat, he is capable of mimicking Rybar to an astonishing degree and has the ability to cheer during Kyiv bombing (what about Donbass). I'd recommend you to stay away from Chinese internet unless you want to be dehumanized like me.
Recently, another person called Atuna (
阿吞啊) popped up, he is some of the most capable pro-Russian ever. At first, he came out with translation of a
RUSI report. However, in his next video, he uses HistoryLegends. Calling him a "neutral pro-Ukraine source". He marked a dangerous new development of pro-Russian messaging, the ability to use actual credible western sources to their advantage. Furthermore, there is another analyst called Mt. Guandong peasant Wangdaxi (关东山农民王大喜), who made a video detailing
RUSI's latest report. He took great note of the adaptation by the Russian armed forces while dismissing the mentions of poor Russian morale as "western hubris", "illogical" and "political correctness". The Wangdaxi person is actually a protégé of sort of the person who claimed Russia is going to take Lviv (that guy deserves his own article), and it seems like now there's an advanced sect of pro-Russian who have access to information. One of his fans in the comments even took a jab at Suyi控, indicating a capability to compete with even the most experienced Zhihu OSINTer. And to make it worse, HistoryLegend serves as a force multiplier of this next-generation pro-Russia crowd. He is basically an A-10 in this "comment section war", he and his pal WeebUnion exerts little use to pro-Russians on YouTube, Reddit and twitter, as the pro-Russian effort is largely focused on amplifying western internal grievances such as the border crisis and China baiting. On 4chan his soyjak face will get mocked to oblivion. However, he truly shines in China. Perun's videos are too lengthy to be translated, meanwhile military history visualized have a long interval and Lazerpig is relatively obscure in China due to meme incompatibility and being too noncredible, he is unrivaled. The way he feigned a neutral pro-Ukraine stance makes it even more damaging, even to the point of starting a disinfolklore began to be built around him, claiming he cried during the fall of Bakhmut, claiming he was a pro-Ukraine guy ostracized by other due to unwilling to follow blindly pro-UA lines.
Warning: Schizo rant below, proceed with caution
Want to hear my stance? Well, maybe they are the right guys all along. I'm not really a member of this sub, I'm always cynical, always skeptical, and always doubtful. Whenever I see the next generation pro-Russians, I become shrouded in doubts. What if they are right? In many cases pro-Ukraine folks are drawn into intellectual traps, such as the need to hold Bakhmut, a city with little strategical importance. And a lack of acknowledgement of Russian adaptation. It could be the Winter War all over again, the Finn fought valiantly, but who controls Karelia now? I have an irrational fear, may it remain irrational, that the average NCD user is no better than the new generation of pro-Russians, that we also lack any critical thinking capability like a mindless horde. The doubt just echoes inside me, it accompanies me whenever I saw a Ukraine flag on someone's twitter handle. Such cynicism often end up manifesting into outbursts against pro-Ukraine positions on reddit. I took a grim enjoyment being the "conscience of NCD" where I regard many as vranyo obsessed individuals no better than the vatniks. If there's anyone reading the passage whose uncle work at GUR, don't ask him to [REDACTED] that soyjak off the surface of the earth. Don't. Chinese opinion does not chance the course of the war. If I have a button to delete Jackson Hinkle's twitter account at the course of every single pro-Ukraine account in China, I'd press it. We can achieve nothing, absolutely nothing. It's a losing battle from the beginning. Such is the reality of Chinese internet.
I see a bad moon rising.

2023.06.03 03:49 inspy PSU doesn't have an 8 pin connector for new (to me) GPU. Solutions other than buying a new PSU or is that it?
Thermaltake Toughpower 850w W0131RU
EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan 12GB 12G-P4-2990-KR
I've found one cable in my search:
PCI Express Dual 6-Pin to 8-Pin Power Adapter Cable
https://eshop.macsales.com/item/MISC/PCIED68PWR1/ Finding a male to male cable was next to impossible and this one doesn't show me the 6 pin connections well enough to know if it would fit the PSU. Nor does it say the cable length. So, I'm not even sure it would work.
I've gone through Amazon and Google like a mad man. And I'm a big fan of my old butt kicker of a PSU.

2023.06.03 03:46 timeistheonlymoney De-dusted computer and now it will not power up
I've a computer which is about 7 years old now. It has run very well up until last week. Last week during GPU intensive games the monitor would go black. Powering down the system and rebooting would "fix" it temporarily. Playing less intensive games or using desktop apps, the problem would not occur. Relaunch GPU intensive games and after about 10 minutes the screen would go back. Rinse and repeat.
My first thought was the GPU was going bad, but I also noticed I had a good bit of dust on filters and fans. So, I thought it was possibly overheating. I very carefully carried it outside and very, very carefully dusted everything off using low-force air pressure, taking special care not to unseat any cables. Point being, I'm 99.99% sure nothing came unplugged. When I brought it back in, I left panels all off so I could watch it power up and verify all fans were working and any remaining dust would blow clear. I connected power cable last, the motherboard's LEDs lit up as usual. I pressed the power button and the CPU cooler's LED flickered. The power supply fans did not come on, the system/cooler fans did not come on, the motherboard emitted no beeps, and the GPU did not turn on. The motherboard LEDs remained lit and did not flicker like the cooler LEDs. I pressed the power again and no flicker, no state change at all. I unplugged the power cable from the power supply, waited, plugged back in, and tried again. CPU cooler's LEDs flickered as before, just once, as before, and not again till I removed and replugged power supply cable. I checked all cables, all fans and seating on all components again. Everything looks good.
Bad power supply? Short somewhere unseen? Unseated CPU cooler? Something else?
Edit: Disconnected power cables from power supply to GPU and the motherboard and fans all start. Reconnected GPU and the blink/flicker problem noted above happens once, again, and the problem described above happens again.

2023.06.03 03:44 NaberiusBuster My Grimm Grudge match (Egg Cup Round 8) on “Make Love, Not Robots”.
The Grimm mirror match between me and my nemesis tough_name_dumb_co.
The meta is drastically different here because of the Rocket Tag nature of this matchup.
The game and it’s replay is here:
https://awbw.amarriner.com/2030.php?games_id=926579 Day 4 (me): I decide to take an aggressive caping strategy in the north. Once the fighting in the center begins you will have great difficulty taking those cities, thus my aggressive approach now. My Infantry also takes a route bypassing the enemy Black Boat. Remember to use your Black Boat to delay his units movements into the center of the map and try to make moves that they can’t properly block.
I also deploy an Artillery on my strong side because I don’t have the funds for a Tank and I want to start exerting pressure ASAP. The mountains in the map make them viable, but be real careful with walling them off.
Day 7 (me): I move the Black Boat to protect my capping Infantry from the Tank. If he wants to stop it he will have to cancel one of his own caps to do so.
I also break off the Com Tower cap and let another trailing Infantry handle it favor of grabbing another city.
Day 8 (me): I attack an Infantry in range of one of his Tanks but have the Artillery guard it. I also build a Mech in the north to ward off Tank aggression for cheap.
Day 8 (him): He takes the bait and manages to destroy my Tank while mounting an attack on the other fronts.
Day 9 (me): I wipe out his Tank in a single blow, butcher his Infantry in the area, start securing an uninterruptable neutral city, and move an AA into a position where it can support the center and the strong side push.
Day 10 (me): I abandon my strategy to avoid attacking the Black Boats for the sake of getting the first power off in favor of getting rid of those annoying bastards.
My Infantry can’t advance in the north thanks to all those enemy Infantry. I build a cheap Recon to drive them off or kill them. Grimm mirror recons OHKO Infantry on plains and have a high chance to do the same in forests. They do the secondary job of AA for half the cost, and the enemy will have to sack a vehicle double their value to stop the massacre. I wind up building a few of these murder machines in my match here.
Day 11 (me): I kill both Black Boats (Artillery+Tank 2HKO and 2 Copters+Tank 3HKO).
Day 11 (him): He sinks my north Black Boat and starts pushing on both flanks.
Day 12 (me): I build a Medium Tank in the south to push back against his vehicles.
Day 13 (me): I perform an ill advised attack and pop my power. I destroy 2 Tanks and my forces gather in the south.
Day 13 (him): He pops his normal power and reams me hard. He destroys 2 Copters, a Tank, sinks my south Black Boat and gathers in the south. Trading those 2 Copters really hurt.
Day 14 (me): The enemy has too many Copters for my liking so my vehicles fall back. My forward Infantry sacrifice themselves to cripple his Infantry in the area and to distract the enemy vehicles. I build an AA and Copter to help turn the air war around.
Day 14 (him): My sacrificial Infantry get gobbled up, he cripples my Artillery with a Tank, and he buys a Recon of his own.
Day 15 (me): My crippled Artillery retreats and a Mech takes it’s spot and OHKOs the offending Tank. My forces start gathering in the center.
Day 16 (me): My forces move into the center with my Medium Tank sitting on a city with a bunch of Infantry out front, and my Tanks, Copters, AA, and 5 HP Artillery in the rear. I also build another AA as well as a pair of Recons to handle the Infantry meat shields.
Day 16 (him): He pops his power and slams into my formation. He blasts through my Infantry walls and gets an AA to cripple my AA, 2 Copters and a Tank to 3HKO my Medium Tank, an AA to OHKO the Copter behind said Medium Tank, and a Copter to cripple a Tank I had on a city. My Infantry wall is almost completely gone, but the rear of my formation is still mostly intact thanks to it. He had to spend 6 vehicles turns (2 Tanks, 1 AA, and 3 Copters) just to kill my medium Tank thanks to all the crap in front of it. The damage is quite low for 12 vehicle actions. He also left all 3 AA and the bulk of his Copter force in range.
Day 17: I have to counter attack to restore balance or I’m done here, so I pop my Super. My objective here is to kill or cripple as many AA and Copters units as possible to take control of the airspace, so all moves will be towards that objective.
A Mech OHKOs a Recon.
My south AA OHKOs a Copter.
(1) My north Tank OHKOs the AA on the city where my medium Tank used to be.
(2) My north Copter OHKOs his Copter.
(3) I sack my 9 HP Infantry into an enemy Tank on my city then my south Tank kills its.
My other north Tank moves onto that space and kills the 9 HP AA.
(4) My other south Tank OHKOs the last AA.
(5) My 2 HP AA sacks itself into a Copter, and combined with 2 Infantry attacks cripples it.
(6) My other north Copter moves onto the M Tank city and OHKOs another Copter.
(7) My 5 HP Artillery, Infantry, and 4 HP Tank 3 HKO a plains Tank.
I’m now ahead in Unit Value and recovered in Unit Count. He has also lost all 3 AA and is down to 2 healthy Copters in the center.
Day 17 (him): He continues to fight. A healthy Copter and the 2 HP one gang up to kill one of my own, and his 2 Tanks and the other healthy Copter cripple 3 of my Tanks.
Day 18 (me): I continue to retaliate.
My sole remaining healthy Tank kills his 8 HP one.
I sack a 2 HP Tank into his 8 HP city Tank, and follow up by blasting it with my 5 HP Artillery and 3 HP Tank to kill it.
My south AA OHKOs his Copter.
My other AA kills his 7 HP Copter. He has now lost all air defense in the center except for the 1 HP Copter.
My surviving Copter cripples his forest Tank.
My 2 Recons take advantage and start eating “free dudes” on both flanks. His Infantry in the south have been reduced to a single 3 HP unit.
Day 18 (him): He still continues to push into my forces. One Tanks OHKOs an AA, and the other Tank cripples an AA on a city. His Infantry hits my 5 HP Artillery down to 2 HP.
Day 19 (me): My 2 HP Artillery clears away a weak blocking Infantry and I pop my Power.
This enables a Tank to OHKO one of his own.
My 3 HP AA cripples a Copter.
My Copter OHKOs a Tank.
A 3 HP Tank sacks itself into an AA and a Copter follows up, but sadly leaves it with 1 HP. He doesn’t have any real air defense after that, and his remaining vehicles in the center are all crippled.
Day 19 (him): He finally retreats from the center, but not before offing my Artillery.
Day 20 (me): I start to rebuild army cohesion in the center of the map. The loss of his air defense lets me use my Copters as shields for my Tanks to hide behind for protection from enemy Tanks. My Copters can rapidly front switch to the flanks from this position.
Day 21 (me): My Infantry reinforcements start to move up and threaten his cities. He is going to have to start sacking strong units to prevent those flips.
Day 21 (him): He kills both capping infantry, but it will hurt him.
Day 22 (me): I join 2 Copters together due to low fuel on one of them. I also take revenge for my Infantry and OHKO a Copter and a Recon. I start capping 2 cities, with the one in the center being blocked off by my 2 Recons. The money from the join lets me deploy a Medium Tank on my weak side to push with.
Day 22 (him): He pops his Super in a desperate attempt to stop the caps. His Tank in the north kills a city Tank, his west Tank OHKOs my Recon, letting an Infantry to get through and interrupt. A Tank in the south OHKOs an AA, and 2 Copters kill the other capping Infantry and the replacement right behind him. All he gets out of this Super are a Tank and AA kill… damn that is weak.
Day 23 (me): I have him right where I want him.
My AA moves up and OHKOs a Copter.
My 1 HP capping Infantry sacks itself against another Infantry, and my surviving Recon finishes it off.
That enables a 2HKO of his Tank by my Copters.
I pop my Power to finish the rest of his overextended forces.
My 5 HP AA OHKOs the other copter.
My center Tank OHKOs an AA.
My south Tank cripples a forest Tank.
One north Tank OHKOs an Infantry on a city, while the other hops on the now vacant space to OHKO a Tank.
The last Copter in the center OHKOs a Tank.
A new Infantry unit starts to cap that center property again.
My enemy is down to 5 combat effective vehicles but only 3 are still in range (Tank, AA, and 3 HP AA), vs 10 of my own that are on the front, and my Medium Tank hasn’t arrived yet.
Day 23 (him): He realizes that he can’t hold on to his property advantage for 7 more days with his depleted forces and resigns.
I have won my Round 8 grudge match. 1 more win means I will make it pass Round 10 for sure.

2023.06.03 03:37 Beanie_Inki The 1800 United States Assembly Elections The Hamiltonian Way
| SUMMARY OF ALEXANDER HAMILTON’S GOVERNORSHIP (1798-1800) Cabinet Attorney General: Charles Lee (1798-1800) Secretary of Foreign Affairs: John Jay (1798-1800) Secretary of Finance: Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1798-1800) Secretary of War: James McHenry (1798-1800) Preparation With the grand success of the National Party in the Assembly, Hamilton got to work with waging his war against France. Securing an alliance with Britain through the Treaty of London, America would soon find itself at war with France and its ally Spain. Through a combination of France and Spain being stretched too thin to fight effectively, and America possessing a gargantuan military thanks to its levée en masse policy, the Gulf of Mexico was successfully blockaded, and the colonial forces starved. America would then conquer its way through Louisiana, Florida, and the Caribbean until it stood as a champion. However, instead of making peace and consolidating the new territories, Hamilton had committed to a great gamble by, with the approval of the British, sending American troops directly to Europe to help put down the French Revolution for Good. Stability The American Revolution was a revolution of intellectuals; elites coming together to organize an overthrow of British rule, guiding the people along the way. The end result was initially instability, under the mob rule provided by the Articles of Confederation, but when the new Constitution came into effect, stability came and America prospered. The same could not be said for France. The French Revolution was a revolution of the mob; angry men coming out to vent themselves by storming buildings, ransacking cities, and plunging the nation into a sea of blood. Royals, nobles, religious figures, anyone suspected of being an opponent of the revolution was sent to the guillotine. It was one thing to throw off the shackles of tyranny; it was another thing altogether to frenziedly execute anyone associated with the old order. Though the Jacobin Club had been dissolved long ago, its ideals have not. There are still many radicals in the world who continue to unwaveringly support such ideals even in the face of the French themselves rejecting it; the Committee of Public Safety had been overthrown many years ago in favor of the more moderate Directorate. Chief among these remaining Jacobins was Thomas Paine, the head of the Country Party’s radicals. It was one thing to be a Jacobin; it was another thing entirely to be a Hébertist like him. With the damage done by Jacobinism as clear as day, Hamilton knew what he had to do. For the sake of not just America, for the sake of not just Europe, but for the sake of the world, the French Revolution had to be stamped out for good. McHenry was shortsighted. It was too risky to just indirectly assist the British. As Jay had prescribed, America had to go to Europe and take the fight directly to France’s shores. This would be a watershed moment in American history; Alexander Hamilton, the first governor of the United States, had held the burden of every one of his actions setting a precedent for future governors to follow, yet none would be quite like this one. America was destined to be actively involved in the world, and for sure every governor following Hamilton would look back to him to deal with their foreign policy. God save America, for there was no turning back now. Outrage Just as Charles Lee was about to strike at the heart of the Friendly Tribune and make an example of their leaders, Hamilton requested a meeting with him. Happy to finally be in contact with someone else in the executive branch, he complied and met with the governor. Hamilton met with Lee regarding public order; sending troops abroad was highly unpopular. Even the newspapers which usually backed Hamilton even in his darkest times were questioning the wisdom of sending troops across the sea. What business would America have fighting in Europe? It made sense to punish the French and their allies in Madrid for their misdeeds and to seize their North American holdings, but there was no land to gain in Europe. The land there was not to colonize, for it was the homeland of colonizers. Hamilton had a simple request for Lee: don’t let the newspapers know a thing about the war in Europe. If anything bad happened, even if it was small, the newspapers would go nuts over it, and the people would follow. Hamilton specifically requested that the Security Act be invoked as soon as any newspaper started speaking up, and that the use of National Marshals against such papers be liberal. “The papers are your enemy, the papers are your enemy. The isolationists are your enemy, the pacifists are your enemy, the pacifists are your enemy. Write that in your journal 100 times.” was what Lee was told by Hamilton. So, with gusto, he got to work keeping every goddamn paper in-line. Unfortunately for Hamilton, it wasn’t just the public he had to worry about, as he had to now contend with the sole cabinet member who opposed his decision: Secretary of War James McHenry. This was inevitable. If he sided with McHenry, he’d have to confront Jay. Regardless, he had to get McHenry to support this since waging a war was going to be difficult without the secretary of war supporting said war. The meeting was brief, as McHenry’s opposition stemmed less from the idea of sending troops to Europe and more so because he believed that it wasn’t winnable and also that the troops would be better off pacifying the newly-occupied territories. Hamilton reassured him of victory being possible, citing the army’s size swelling to almost 6-digits from its already massive size of 80,000 at the war’s start. Furthermore, Hamilton reminded McHenry of the Security Act’s potency in dealing with uppity non-citizens and Attorney General Lee’s efficiency in enforcing the act. National Marshals would be fine enough to secure the territories while the bulk of the army was in Europe, though a small force would be left behind to deal with it. It seemed the meeting was over, but McHenry had one last concern to mention, on behalf of Secretary of Finance Wolcott, who had been frequently absent for “personal reasons” since the passage of the Fourteen Points. The problem was that of funding such an operation. Funding was generally fine for most of the war due to the Economic Reorganization Act, but fighting such a war in Europe was risky from a fiscal perspective. Hamilton reassured McHenry that he had a plan in mind just in case the money ran dry, though he wouldn’t elaborate. Satisfied, the meeting ended, and Hamilton got to speaking with Britain over the Jay Plan. Cooperation For once, William Grenville would see the governor himself, as opposed to John Jay. He could only hope that whatever happened here would leave a good impression; he had high expectations for such a man like Hamilton. Though, he knew little about why this meeting was called on such short notice, and why Hamilton himself was even there to begin with. So, the meeting began. Hamilton first began to ask questions about what was going on regarding the European theater. Grenville answered by bringing up the two main campaigns: the slightly successful campaign in Holland, and the stalemating campaign in Italy and Switzerland. The former was only successful due to the arrival of Prussian forces, which had been turning the tide of war, while the latter was a stalemate due to mountainous terrain making offensives nearly impossible against the might of the French Army. The Battle of Novi, which resulted in a victory for Austro-Prussian forces in Italy. With that now known, Hamilton informed Grenville of his intention to send American troops over to Europe in order to assist in putting down the French Republic. Furthermore, to surely get Grenville’s approval, he even claimed he intended to go himself. This completely stunned Grenville. Though he knew that Hamilton had a preference for Britain over France, he was still a revolutionary, and him outright planning to send troops across the Atlantic to put one down seemed completely backwards. Still, help was help, and so he happily informed Hamilton that such action would be appreciated. Of course, the devil was always in the details. The American Army was an extremely large army. If there was one similarity between America and France, it was that they both practiced levée en masse. With all of those troops, lots of food, ammunition, and other supplies were going to be needed to keep them supplied enough to fight. Hamilton acknowledged that he could only give them so many supplies. The bulk of their supplies once they arrived would have to be from Britain and other nations in the Coalition. Wanting nothing more than the final destruction of the French Revolution, Grenville promised logistical support for the troops. Viewing the meeting as successful, the two ended it there. Hamilton was set to take an unprecedented action; America was going to fight across the sea. Such an action had untold rewards, but doing so possessed unbelievable risks. If anyone could prevail, however, it would be Hamilton. Leaked American troops had landed in Europe, ready to fight. The journey took a bit longer than expected; the seas were rougher than usual, but they still made it. This was it. This was the twilight of the French Revolution. Unfortunately, back at home, the press caught wind of the staggering number of America’s men landing in Europe. While nothing bad had happened to them yet, Hamilton had underestimated just how much the public opposed any action in Europe. Despite the best efforts of Attorney General Lee, the press was able to make hay with this. Particularly, that damned Friendly Tribune, right before its final shutdown after Lee had discovered its headquarters in the basement of a building that was supposed to be for textile manufacturing. The whole damn place was run by Quakers. Lee felt incredibly stupid for not making the blatantly obvious connection earlier. Regardless, the newspaper was destroyed in one fell swoop, and those who worked for it were subsequently arrested and convicted. But this wasn’t going to be the end of it. Absolutely not. The news was out there. Shutting down the papers wouldn’t make that any less true. Already, people were visibly angry about it. Protests began popping up in Philadelphia, and Quakers were running amok denouncing the intervention in Europe. Lee had failed his one job, God help him. Timing What a disaster. Hamilton was all the way in Europe fighting, the people had just gotten wind of the highly unpopular direct intervention, and worst of all, it was election season. Whether Hamilton forgot or simply didn’t care was up in the air. Regardless, for the first time since the Whiskey Rebellion, Hamilton’s allies felt like they would lose. The National Party was very divided on the direct intervention. They were already divided on the matter of war to begin with; passing the Mobilization Act was no easy feat. But taking the fight to Europe? Many in the party had privately found Hamilton to be insufferable, and a small few in the Assembly began to openly criticize the war. Senate President Pinckney, who acted as governor in Hamilton’s absence, could only thank God that the Senate Nationals had more party discipline. The Country Party, on the other hand, was vehemently opposed to the war from day one. They saw it as completely ridiculous and counterproductive considering they were a revolutionary nation; what kind of revolutionary nation fights other revolutionary nations? The initial war in North America swayed some of them and the anti-war public into supporting it due to the successes, but war in Europe was insane. Yet this war was so controversial, that it broke the two-party system. The Quakers, who found no home in either party due to their opposition to mobilization and war as a whole, which made the National Party unfit for them, and their opposition to slavery and Revolutionary France’s worst excesses made the Country Party unfit for them. So, under the leadership of famed abolitionist Elias Hicks, a new party was born from the ideals of the Quakers: the Friendship Party. Elias Hicks, Quaker, abolitionist, and founder of the Friendship Party. THE 1800 UNITED STATES ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS National Party The cockade of the National Party. The National Party stands as the nation’s dominant party. With a supermajority in the Assembly and a working supermajority in the Senate, the nation bows to the whims of the party; more often than not the wishes of Governor Hamilton. The Nationals support Hamilton’s entire domestic program of the Fourteen Points, high tariffs, internal improvements, and defending the Bank. The party, however, stands in its most divided state since the Whiskey Rebellion. With many members already skeptical of the Mobilization Act and the prospect of war with France, Hamilton’s decision to personally lead American troops into Europe has caused factionalism to once more present itself in the party, with a noticeable chunk of the party opposing such action. The Louisianans are the less dominant, more moderate faction of the party, headed by Massachusetts Governor John Adams. While still remaining mostly loyal to Governor Hamilton, they do hold some opposition to his domestic policies, most notably the levée en masse provision of the Mobilization Act. Most notably, however, is their opposition to Hamilton’s current foreign policy. The Louisianans are highly opposed to directly intervening in Europe, believing that consolidating the newly conquered territories, most notably Louisiana, is much more beneficial to the nation than recklessly sending American troops overseas, instead favoring indirectly supporting the Coalition through giving arms and loans. The Rejuvenationists are the current dominant faction of the party, and are obstinately loyal to Governor Hamilton. Headed by Senate President Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, they dance to the tune of Hamilton’s every word as they lend their support towards his complete domestic agenda alongside supporting rigorous enforcement of the Mobilization Act’s levée en masse provision. On foreign policy, they believe in continuing the war until the French Revolution is fully stamped out, in order to destroy the threat of Jacobinism one and for all and rejuvenate America’s standing in the global community. Most controversially, some radicals in the faction have even proposed a postwar military alliance with Britain in order to ensure a maintenance of the postwar order. Country Party The cockade of the Country Party. The Country Party has, for most of its history so far, been a joke of a party. Opposing Hamilton’s popular agenda and being dominated by radicals alienated many voters, resulting in it never finding a true mandate in the Assembly. However, with Hamilton’s direct intervention in Europe causing the greatest uproar against the governor since the Whiskey Rebellion, the party may finally find a chance to win. Opposing Hamilton’s domestic agenda, the party calls for a reduction in tariffs, an end to the whiskey tax, and an exit from the war paired with an immediate repeal of the Mobilization Act. However, the party still holds factions, with radicals calling for an end to national internal improvement programs, the bank, and even the standing army, while moderates wish to see a continuation of internal improvements, a reduction in the power of the bank, and the maintenance of a voluntary standing army. The Normalists are the moderates, headed by Assembly Minority Leader DeWitt Clinton. Calling for a return to normalcy from the turbulent rule of the National Party, the Normalists call for an immediate peace, a repeal of the Security Act, a reduction in tariffs and the whiskey tax, and the pursuit of American neutrality. However, unlike their more radical counterparts, they still believe in national internal improvement programs and only weakening the Bank. Furthermore, they don’t believe in abolishing the standing army, viewing it to be necessary to fight both domestic and foreign threats to national sovereignty. The Brumaireians are the radicals, headed by former Assembly Minority Leader Thomas Paine. The Brumaireians support a peace treaty with France and Spain containing compensation for the conquered territories, and an issuing of arms shipments and loans to Revolutionary France, viewing them as fellow revolutionaries fighting a fight not so different from America’s own decades prior. On domestic affairs, they favor a complete repeal of the entire Fourteen Points and the Mobilization Act, alongside abolishing the Bank, national internal improvements, the whiskey tax, all protective tariffs, and the standing army, viewing them all as threats to liberty and proof of the urban class conspiring to dominate the common farmer. Friendship Party *Note: This is a write-in option only.* The cockade of the Friendship Party. The newest party to join the American political scene, the oddly named Friendship Party seeks to further the interests of the Quaker cause, and especially the cause of pacifism. Headed by famed abolitionist Elias Hicks, the party seeks to combine various ideas from both parties paired with abolitionism. They take from the National Party’s disdain for Revolutionary France and their high support for merchants. They take from the Country Party’s support for peace and their opposition to the Mobilization Act, the Security Act, and the standing army. Their syncretic ideals are further represented by their notable members, with Moses Brown representing the merchants, William Savery representing the pro-Indian rights activists, and Robert Pleasants representing the rural folk. However, due to the party’s affiliation with a small religious group, their hardline pacifism and abolitionism, and the fact that they’ve only just formed, the party is not even known to most voters, and is not projected to get many, if any seats. Furthermore, Quakers are mostly based in the Mid-Atlantic, and consequently, the Friendship Party is only able to run candidates in that area, with all of the candidates requiring write-ins due to not being included on the ballot. 2023.06.03 03:36 Character_Taro_5938 Should I be the bigger person?
I did not have the best relationship with my parents during my teenage years but now as I’m almost 30 I have gotten a lot closer with my mom since I moved away. I felt bad for leaving my brother behind because I was basically the only adult figure in his life he would respect and listen to. Whenever my parents needed him to do something they would call me to call him, I had to help him with Job interview prep, help cook meals that he would be able to eat because he’s picky. At the time I didn’t think anything of it because he’s my little brother. My brother is only 1 year younger than me. Present day, he has a lot of anger issues, depression, and possibly undiagnosed bipolar disorder. The first year I left home I felt so guilty for leaving him, he’d call me saying he’s sad and has no motivation to do anything. We came up with a plan for him to get his act together: start making his own meals, going to the gym, applying for jobs, etc. Things were good. I talked to my mom everyday and my dad once a week and my brother every once in a while. Whenever I would come home to visit, my brother and I would spend a lot of time together. Flash forward 3 years later, my brother was visiting to get lasik eye surgery done because it’s cheaper here and he booked his flight on his own (which he usually doesn’t do) and he sent me his itinerary and it was for 2 months… I called immediately saying 2 months is way too long for just us two in my house. We bicker quite a lot when it’s just us and we both have tempers but he assured me it’d be okay, he’ll keep to himself a lot.
Over the 2 months we did have little tiffs here and there because I was trying to use this time to help him be an independent adult who would be able to live on his own. On his last night here, he got very very drunk and we got into a verbal altercation which led into a physical one. My brother beat me and I had to call the cops on him. He broke my bedroom door trying to get into my room when I locked him out. Meanwhile my boyfriend was on FaceTime with me the whole time having to witness and hear everything without being able to do anything to help. The cops came and asked if I wanted to press charges, obviously I said no because I would’ve had to bail him out since he knows no one here. He calmed down after the cops left. I didn’t realize he had called my dad and told him that I called the cops on him for nothing and told him some twisted version of the story. the next morning, my brother and I walked by each other in my living room and he didn’t say a word to me. I finished work that day and immediately drove to my bfs (3 hours away) I felt guilty for leaving my brother because I took the only car and he would’ve had to Uber to the airport so before I left I bought him fast food to last the night. My dad had called me asking what happened, I briefly told him I was still very shaken up so I didn’t go into too much detail. My dads only fcking comment was “you called the cops?! That’s going to bring down your property value” LOL right. So I immediately hung up the phone and didn’t talk to my parents for a week or two because I knew I needed time to cool off in order to handle a convo with them and I didn’t want to hate them. Meanwhile the next day my brother sent me a text “I’m sorry” to that I replied for what? And he said for hitting you. Fcking pathetic ass excuse for an apology.
A couple weeks later I talk to my parents and they understand what happened and swore to me they’d never give another dime to my brother and they really yelled at him. That summer I came home and didn’t speak a word to my brother, I just couldn’t and didn’t feel safe around him. It made me feel sad and guilty but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Then when I came home for thanksgiving and christmas, my mom was trying to force and guilt trip me into talking to my brother. I told her if she keeps pushing me it’ll make me never want to talk to him. My parents said I should help my brother find a job while I’m home (he’s been unemployed for 2 years); I told them to F off he’s an adult and I have a full time job I need to do while I’m visiting, maybe in your free time they said. Some nights when my parents were asleep and my brother would come into the living room I’d slowly make small talk then eventually it led into me asking if he wants to watch a movie with me and into me inviting him to the gym with me. First gym interaction was him screaming at me for parking too close to a car, normally I’d retaliate but I just didn’t let him get to me so I just ignored him. Our relationship will never be the same but I was still able to talk to him occasionally.
Fast forward to February of this year. My Cousin had a huge Asian wedding. We all got very drunk and in the Uber home it was my mom, dad, brother, uncle, my bf, and me. Not sure how the conversation happened but my brother started talking about how he respects women and that triggered my bf who’s very productive of me. This led into a screaming match in the Uber, my parents and I both trying to calm my bf and brother down. When we arrived at the hotel and got out, my bf punched my brother in the nose and he was bleeding and the whole Asian family started screaming and crying. Everyone found out my brother beat me and my bf was trying to defend me. My bf and I immediately left the hotel and took an Uber back to the air bnb where we packed our things and got a hotel room for the rest of the weekend.
I received calls and texts from my parents and brother saying it’s my brother or my bf, I had to choose and if I chose my bf my brother would never talk to me again and my parents will never want to be In the same room as my bf ever again. My parents both said they loved my bf and could’ve loved him more than my brother but now they can never look at him again. They also said they thought him and I were going to take care of my brother after they passed away. My bf and I completely agree that it should’ve never gotten physical. I was sad to see my brother hurt but in a way he did kind of deserve it? I mean he had punched me in the face and legs and arms when he had beat me and I was unable to fight back? So is it payback idk?
My dad and I still talk from time to time but he still despises my bf and will send me texts from time to time saying he doesn’t trust him. My mom and brother have not once called me. I sent my mom a bouquet of flowers on Mother’s Day, I get a text “I’ll always love you”. I had texted my brother apologizing for what happened and that my bf and I truly do care about him but we just want him to get better. I told him if he starts seeing a therapist to help resolve the anger issues I’d be open to trying to rebuild our relationship- no response.
My bf and I have been together for 3 years, we have 3 dogs and a home together. He is my person. It’s been really hard for me because I used to be so close to my family. I’ve thought about being the bigger person and giving my mom and brother a call but part of me thinks what’s the point? Why do I have to be the bigger person? Shouldn’t my mom want to talk to me? Shouldn’t she call me? I just feel like they’re choosing my brother over me.
