2023.05.28 01:59 Substantial-Sign-702 [WIP] One quarter done the Winter Cabin Dimensions kit. Enjoying the winter vibe in this spring weather.
2023.05.28 01:46 samanthasgramma 3 drowned mice ... my naked sprint and the old guy
For this one, I have to set the scene.
It happened a number of years ago, when I was still semi-youngish, slimmer, cuter, and menopause hadn't cried "You're old, now, and have done childbirth a couple of times? WHOMP!". Nothing had headed so south, back then.
I live in a Northern Southern Ontario snow belt region, in a lovely suburban neighborhood of raised single residence bungalows, perfect front lawns and folks who keep an eye on you, whether you like it or not. It's a quiet place, with mostly old folks, and we were the barbarian youngsters who had the unmitigated gall to start and raise a family in the middle of homes who go to bed at 9:45 p.m.
Having said this, we got along well with the next door, 134 year old, neighbors. She took up two airline seats, had a nasal, high pitched voice, and loved to sit in her back yard, drinking white wine, calling her husband's name and issuing horticultural instructions. He was 14 months beer pregnant, slumped around his yard with a defeated gait, was usually shirtless doing good weather, and his upper butt crack, and I, were too well acquaintaned.
Over all, they were okay. She got a little puckered when she caught him spying on me when I sun bathed on my patio, but otherwise, they were good people.
One more important detail ... My garage is part way into my basement, and the passage door is in my downstairs hallway. It's significant because I was carrying a bucket of hot water, lots of Lysol in it, and a rag, through the house, and down to this door - paw prints on the door casing - when I was called away. Thinking I'd get back to the job later, I opened the door, plunked the bucket onto the floor of the garage, and left. I never got back to the job.
I don't know about you, but at about this time of year - late autumn - my garage turns into a dumping ground that accumulates debris, until some point, in the spring, when I yell "There isn't even a path through here! We're cleaning the garage!". And so, my bucket of Lysol water was promptly buried under something (I think a loosely folded tarpoline) and completely forgotten.
Weeks go by, when I had cause to go into the garage, and I smelled it. That funky smell of something that had found it's way inside and died. Given the state of the place, it took a concentrated effort to locate the source. In my Lysol water were 3 drowned mice. The bucket had to go. But I also had to go. Had a place to be, and I was already late. But the smell ... I grabbed the bucket, took it outside, and carefully placed it at the far corner of the garage. I'd deal with it later.
But, that night, it SNOWED. Not the light, fluffy, pretty stuff. We got dumped on. Heavy, dense, impenetrable. It buried the bucket, and I forgot about it. And it wasn't until the mid-spring thaw that the bucket emerged again.
I eyed it, wondering what I was going to do with 3 decomposing mice in a bucket of Lysol water. It was fully melted, and sloshed a bit when I picked it up. I had a stroke of genius. Dump it behind the back shed.
I could hear my next door neighbors, in their yard, christening the first day of warmth with libations, as I trudged through my yard, and looked at the wet mud hill that leads to the back of my shed. The mud would be slippery, but I had 3 decomposing mice, in Lysol water, needing to leave my possession, so I was prepared to risk it.
... to be continued...

2023.05.28 01:38 HopeTroll Hunter’s Oral History (2004): “We Solve Unsolved Cases In This Country… Cases that Haven't Been Solved after 10, 15, 20, 25 years … We Must Not Give Up!!!
Thanks to
u/-searchingirl for mentioning Hunter's oral history
https://localhistory.boulderlibrary.org/islandora/object/islandora%3A25588?solr_nav%5Bid%5D=e941fb4f3ae7ecc9d9ec&solr_nav%5Bpage%5D=0&solr_nav%5Boffset%5D=1&solr_nav%5Bquery%5D=%20 Hunter’s Take
My sister says to me, “I'm so sorry you had to have this case,” … I want to share that I don't feel that way … There were tremendous challenges, unpopular decisions that had to be made …I feel … to some extent proud … that I weathered the storms, as I think a DA should, and did the right thing based on the evidence and I'm … real comfortable with that
Hunter’s Grand Jury Experience
When I announced … the grand jury finished its work and … I had concluded … there was insufficient evidence to bring charges, this disappointed a lot of people.
Hunter’s Last Term
There had been some questions … about whether I should run [for DA] again.
The thinking being, 24-years was enough, but I decided to go again and the Gods may have had this case as a present for me, for making that decision…
Why the case became high-profile
- The [Timothy] McVeigh case and the Nicholls cases were about to begin in Denver, in the spring of ’97… The satellite trucks were stationed hear here. There was a lot of downtime and those trucks are very expensive to run… and Boulder [is only] 30 minutes away. When this case started, … They were up here with their trucks and their microphones.
- There were so many videotapes and photos of JonBenet in costumes and outfits. These photographers were selling some of [them] for $50,000-60,000 [each] … the tabloids would spend that in a minute.
Reporters were stealing his garbage
I had reporters going through my trash. I finally had to put a sign on the the garbage cans that [read], “if you're walking your dog you can put your poop here” and that stopped some of them from going in.
The Side Shows
When the media got their claws into this one, there were so many side shows.
Larry Schiller
I remember looking out … and here was Larry Schiller, who wrote the book “Perfect Town Perfect Murder” and he's got an entourage of a half a dozen people and he's showing them where I live.
Geraldo Rivera
Rivera was down at the Boulderado, stirring up the public interest … He or one of his people called my [10-year old] daughter … to say you … really ought to persuade your dad to be on our show.
Eller
…Tom Koby, … a very good chief had taken a man from his staff who did not have felony investigative experience and made him the commander of detectives prior to the death of JonBenet … this commander … did not have the instincts to work this investigation in a cooperative, collaborative way … and he believed early on … there was evidence, for example semen on JonBenet’s panties
… the commander focused his attention on the Ramsey's based on his understanding of that evidence or perhaps some other evidence, that I'm not aware of, … and he forgot that … you can't have blinders on or you are not going to turn all of rocks that need to be turned.
…John Eller was the Commander of Detectives and did not have the kind of experience … necessary to deal with this caliber of investigation and he had the opinion that he knew who did it and it's my impression that the department's focus … on the Ramseys to the exclusion of … other evidence.
the final break before Eller was replaced was that in the fall of 1997, Vanity Fair did a piece we've come to know … because of depositions … one of the main detectives [Steve Thomas was the source], … with no homocide experience, … a number of things … appeared in that article that were evidentiary … and … were from … case filings about the ransom note … plus direct criticism of the DA's office.
…one of the deputies was accused of giving one of the defense attorneys a backrub at one of the meetings that involved handwriting analysis.
I was at that meeting, it never happened, but that didn't matter…
Lou Smit saves the trainwreck
…early on … I … put on my staff … a hot shot detective who'd solved numerous kinds of crimes in the Colorado Springs area working in the police department and in the sheriff's office.
... we're getting hundreds and hundreds of pages and evidence. They needed to be cataloged in an appropriate way, so that we could retrieve them. … Lou was able to set up a database out of it.
If it was fibers, we could pull that up as a particular fiber...I wanted to be able to compete with a defense team that had unlimited resources at that time and was doing everything that a defense team could do in this kind of high-profile case.
…Well Lou Smit was referred to in the Vanity Fair article as a delusional old man, because if this was the BPD’s general view of him … Koby and I could not mend that …
[Lou Smit is] probably one of the finest investigators I've ever known… certainly he didn't like being called a delusional old man, but also being disrespected to the extent he was by the Boulder police officers ... and maybe his own following of the evidence, Lou Smit became pretty much convinced and he's been on national TV that it was an intruder.
One of my deputies who is working closely with him … also became convinced or nearly convinced that it was an intruder. …
Koby’s Apology Letter
I had an apology letter from Koby ... I've never released that letter from him saying, it's outrageous, I don't know who did it, I apologize …
Vanity Fair Article Fallout
I tried to counter that Vanity Fair article … [with an] interview with Larry Schiller, … [in the] New Yorker…
I thought it was … a mediocre article. …the agreement in writing was … he would not use that material for his book.
I have that on New Yorker stationary. … I think things were rolling too fast and furious in terms of the high-profile nature of this case …
The Tabloids
… a picture of JonBenet on the cover and [it] didn't really matter … about the content …one of those reporters said to me that every time they had …a picture of JonBenet on the front of their tabloid, they would sell an extra 250,000 copies.
His Philosophy
…prosecutors around the country have said to me … how lucky you are …that your job is putting away people that have interfered with an individuals right to do what they want to do, their peace, and to have hurt them
…I'm honored to have been able to do that this last case … I think that it allowed me to draw deep on what I am as a human being, what I am as a lawyer, to call it the right way, to do the right thing in the face I think of a lot of hollering and yelling by the public that couldn't stand …to think that a little six year-old girl had been murdered and There is yet to be any justice I mean this this does not sit well with any of us …it would have been easy to bring charges but to approach charges when you didn't feel you could make your case would have been a horrible thing to do …
it's an unsolved case we solve unsolved cases in this country you taught any prosecutor he'll tell you he can name cases that have been solved after 10 15 20 25 years and I can think of five or six in our county so we must not give up on that
RDI petty party poopers
…the bumps and grinds of the case and some lost relationships, some real losses … one of my deputies … who I hired straight out of law school, … worked for me for the whole time…[didn’t attend my] retirement because [he said] I'm angry at you about this okay. … I had to make …a tough call but it was the right thing to do. …
you want to the search for the truth and [if] people are not gonna follow the evidence, like some police officers, they need to be gone … they need off because it is a search for the truth, it's a turning of all of the rocks, it's to follow the evidence where it takes you If you think you know where you're going you can't follow the evidence and that's a very important the thing to know…
Hunter’s Family
I'm grateful that [my] family was able to … take this in stride. I never saw them … upset, cry, or anything like that. I mean they didn't … like the publicity, but I'd been a DA from their birth through their very early years and I think they kind of rolled into that.
Hunter’s Final Analysis
…In the final analysis …I don't think we lost evidence …we picked up all of the hairs we picked up all of the fibers you know we took all of the photographs and so I don't think any evidence was lost because of this pissing contest …the public is not interested in paying its’ police department and its’ prosecutors to not get along and to fight with each other…

2023.05.28 01:33 ScathachtheShadowy September: Crazy to Go for the First Time?
Costa Rica is a bucket-list dream vacation of my husband's. I'd like to go this year to celebrate a milestone anniversary, but the only time we can both get away is early September. Is this dumb? We have a decent budget and would like to do La Fortuna and then the beach, maybe Drake Bay? I know the Caribbean side is drier but I figure a big-ticket introduction to CR ought to involve the volcano and the Pacific. And I'd hate to not be able to raft or snorkel because of the weather. Should we just wait and go next spring? Looking at 10-12 days, $10K all in including flights.

2023.05.28 00:01 FightingUrukHai The People of Aluwa
The people of Aluwa, called the ani’Aluwa in the gla’Aluwa language, first appear in the archeological record in subtle signs. New tools appear, improvements on old methods of fishing and farming. Images of uncertain meaning but familiar feeling are carved into and painted onto the walls of caves. Goods from distant lands are found, indicating the birth of an extensive trade network. In Aluwa oral tradition, this was a time of legend, when monsters swam through flooded forests, stars danced in the sky and changed their patterns, and men intermarried with spirits to birth mighty heroes. Scientifically speaking, the emergence of the ani’Aluwa onto the world stage seems to have been somewhat less dramatic – an intermingling of the peoples of the coast and the peoples of the river, who shared their knowledge and their resources and thus created a new society, able to outcompete their less stable or prosperous neighbors.
Geography Aluwa is positioned near the center of Horea, with the colder forests of Tritonea to the north, the dry steppes of Xanthea to the west, and the warmer jungles of Gorgonea to the south and east. This central location is mirrored in its people, made up of shared Gorgonean, Tritonean, and Xanthean ancestry. The Aluwa heartland lies on the north coast of the Gorgonean inland sea that the ani’Aluwa call Iteha, with their greatest population density lying along the banks of the Plombalo River. The climate is warm, with hot summers, mild winters, and distinct springs and autumns. Most of the land is covered in oak forests, with mesquite, hickory, sycamore, elm, and cedar trees also common. Toward the west, the tree cover begins to peter out into open prairie.
Food The ani’Aluwa of this time, as throughout history, got most of their sustenance through a combination of fishing and agriculture, although they also continued more ancient practices of hunting and gathering. Traditionally, agriculture was handled by women, while men went out to hunt, gather, and fish. Agriculture was primarily focused on the intercropped three sisters of corn, beans, and squash, but peppers, sweet potatoes, cassava, and even turkeys had been brought in by trade with more southerly Gorgonean peoples. Their farms lay along the Plombalo and other, smaller rivers that water Aluwa, or further afield raised up among basic irrigation canals. The Aluwa women worked with mattocks and sickles, along with the new invention of hoes. Many of these tools, especially the hoes, had their cutting edges made of sharp clam or whelk shells, a sign of the interdependence of the riverine and coastal Aluwa communities. Others were made of flint, which is common in the area. Only a very few tools of any sort were made of copper or bronze. Although the ani’Aluwa had learned the techniques of bronze smelting in domed and pit ovens from their Gorgonean trade partners, as well as how to anneal and cold-work bronze into desired shapes, they had no significant ore deposits of copper, tin, or any other useful metal and so had to trade for any metal tools.
While the women stayed in the village growing their crops and raising their turkeys, the men journeyed out to gather food from the wild. The main animal hunted was the white-tailed deer, which provided not only meat but hides. On a smaller scale, rabbits, quail, ducks, geese, and doves were also hunted. Their usual weapon used in hunts was the atlatl, throwing spears with the same flint and seashell points as their farming implements. The men would also gather wild nuts and fruits – pecans, acorns, chestnuts, walnuts, strawberries, elderberries, pawpaws, and persimmons. One of Aluwa’s more notable innovations was their use of grafting to increase the productivity of nut- and fruit-bearing trees. Even more notable was their knowledge of herbalism. Specially trained wise men, taught the secrets of herblore, would search out medicinal plants to heal the sick and, in the case of the psychotropic mountain laurel, to commune with the spirits.
In every village, whether on a river or the coast, fishing was a fundamental source of sustenance. Inland, men would use a combination of drop nets and sunken basket traps to fish up bass, catfish, sunfish, gar, and walleye, as well as crawfish. On the coast, they would use similar techniques to catch trout, redfish, and flounders, along with shrimp, snails, crabs, and lobsters. Clams and oysters would be gathered simply by digging in the sand of the beaches. The biggest fish swam in deeper waters, though, and the ani’Aluwa would have to get on their plank boats and set out to sea. There they would use specially designed harpoons to spear snappers, groupers, and tuna.
Once it had been gathered, the food would be prepared in ways reminiscent of later Aluwa recipes. Using the readily available lime, corn would be nixtamalized into hominy. Both meats and vegetables would be smoke cured to improve both taste and imperishability. Some of the earliest Aluwa dishes consisted of combinations of different kinds of fish smoked with different kinds of wood, each providing a unique flavor.
Lifestyle Due to the warm climate of Aluwa, and the protective forest canopy that shielded its inhabitants from the sun, the ani’Aluwa tended not to need much clothing. The only covering decency required, and the only thing most people wore, was a short skirt for men or a loincloth for women. These would be woven out of fibers from the fronds of palms that grew along the coast. In the winter, people would cover themselves with warmer deerskin pants and shirts – winters were mild and snow was rare, but it still did get cold enough to be uncomfortable in nothing but a loincloth.
The early ani’Aluwa were great workers of wood, chopping down trees with simple adzes and using their basic carpentry knowledge to craft wigwam-like houses out of flexible young saplings covered in bark. Their villages consisted of many such houses, surrounded by farmland cleared out of the forest. The villages were thought of as a feminine space, governed by matrilineal elders, while the wilderness was a masculine space, inhabited only by wandering hunter-gatherers. Traditionally, when a boy reached maturity, he would leave his home village behind, joining a new village where he would find a wife to marry (intratribal marriages being taboo).
Little is known about early Aluwa spirituality. Followers of Ahiye will declare that it is the oldest religion in the world, worshipped by the first humans, but there is little archeological evidence for much of the religion’s practices at this time. Some facets of Ahiye are definitely present, however. Religious objects, including those of distinctly female figures, have been found on hills and manmade mounds of dirt or stone, indicating belief in some sort of female sky deity. Similarly, carvings and objects with masculine characteristics are found in caves, suggesting a mirrored male earth deity. In places without natural caves, the ani’Aluwa would build artificial “caves” out of limestone blocks, often brought in from miles away – an example of their knowledge of basic masonry, even if they preferred wood in their other constructions. However, it seems that at the time the reverence of local spirits was more important to the ani’Aluwa, with many small shrines devoted to trees and landmarks being scattered across the land.
Many of the mystical symbols found in ancient Aluwa sacred places mirror the patterns of the constellations. Some of the earliest myths of the ani’Aluwa were linked to these constellations they drew. These symbols have also been found on early plank boats, indicating that the ani’Aluwa were not just looking to the sky for spiritual guidance, but for physical guidance as they sailed the sea of Iteha. This celestial navigation technique allowed Aluwa ships to venture out of sight of shore, certain of their position, enabling them to travel long distances in search of fish or trade partners.
A Note on gla’Aluwa Pronunciation
In the gla’Aluwa language, stress always lands on the third-to-last syllable, unless the word is less than three syllables long (in which case stress is on the first syllable) or an accent mark is present (in which case stress is on the accented syllable). Most root words are three syllables long, with prefixes being added to modify them. The vowels are pronounced as in Spanish; the consonants are mostly the same as in the IPA with a handful of exceptions: y is pronounced as in English, dh represents the soft th sound as in ‘the’, and ‘ is used for a glottal stop. The sound of ng is as in English, but doesn’t have a hard g at the end – it’s pronounced like in ‘hanger’, not ‘anger’. If the sound in ‘anger’ is needed, the next syllable will start with a g, as in the gla’Alawa word ‘Bonggabo’ (meaning ‘rabbit’). gla’Aluwa speakers consider bl, pl, gl, and kl to be single letters, but they are still pronounced like the two letters in their Latin alphabet digraph.

2023.05.27 23:40 24thfoot Happy to see my windmill palm is pushing new growth after spear pulling in early spring (University Park, MD)
| The temperature got down to 6 or 7 degrees Fahrenheit this past winter which caused three of my four trachycarpus fortunei to experience spear pulls. Thankfully, all are recovering well. submitted by 24thfoot to palmtalk [link] [comments] |
2023.05.27 23:29 averagepolistudent Sciences Po Reims, Aix or Lille?
I have a decision to make to choose Science Po Reims, Aix or Lille for a Jan-April semester exchange. Which campus can I have the best experience?
Never been to France before and don't speak French. I want to have fun and travel around too. I heard the weather and vibe can be kind of gloomy and rain during that time and it's giving me second thoughts as to where to go.

2023.05.27 22:13 Proletlariet Zuko
"Never give up without a fight."
History: Scarred and banished by his father at an early age, Prince Zuko believed it was his destiny to capture the Avatar to restore his honor. After traveling the world under the sage guidance of his Uncle Iroh, he pursued Avatar Aang with dogged devotion. Yet along the way, Zuko discovered a new destiny. He came to consider Aang his closest friend, and became his firebending master. Together, they defeated Fire Lord Ozai and restored balance to the world.
As the new Fire Lord, Zuko oversaw a revolutionary age of restoration and unity throughout the Fire Nation. He returned his mother to her home, spread knowledge of a new firebending form, and helped found the United Republic of Nations. After ceding the throne to his daughter, Zuko spent his retirement as an ambassador of peace throughout the world, continuing to fight for the unity he and Aang worked so hard to build together.
Powers/Skills: Zuko produces and controls fire, wielding it with the Dancing Dagon firebending form. He has been known to employ advanced skills in swordsmanship and infiltration, and later came to rely on his dragon Druk as a companion as they traveled the world.

2023.05.27 22:03 UncleJFo Coastal Hiking Trail, Pukaskwa National Park
Where: Pukaskwa National Park, Ontario
When: May 15-22, 2023
Distance: ~120km round trip, ~350m elevation gain (according to official signage)
Weather: Mostly sunny with highs in low teens during the day, and low single digits overnight. One day of light rain.
Bugs: None!
Lighterpack:
https://lighterpack.com/rd4iwc Details:
TL;DR: Incredible trip: mostly perfect weather, no bugs, stunning and varied terrain. Not as strenuous as, say, La Cloche in Killarney PP (Ontario), but a few technical sections. Highly recommend.
Crowds: The park opened on Monday, May 15 and I was the first one on trail this season. As a result, I was making fresh tracks and didn’t see another person from Monday afternoon until my last night on Sunday, May 21. Given the linear, there-and-back nature of the trail and the lack of other footprints on my return, I’m fairly certain I was likely the only person on trail for six days, which is pretty incredible and a first for me.
Trail conditions: I had to deal with a variety of debris and trees that fell over the course of the winter. Nothing unmanageable, but I took notes of a few of the worst ones to help park staff target their spring clean up efforts. Otherwise, a few areas of the trail were muddy or flooded, likely from spring run-off, but these I could mostly navigate around and some of it had improved by the time I made my way back a few days later (e.g. east of Chigamiwinigum Falls).
Route finding: The trail has a reputation for tricky route finding. I actually found it pretty straightforward for the most part. Whenever I felt off trail, I could usually find my way within a minute or two and only really needed my GPS in a few sections. I built up a few cairns on the rocky sections, but what is currently there is largely sufficient. The forest sections are generally fine, with a few exceptions, mostly due to tree fall. My main observation is that trail signage, where it exists, is inconsistent in form: sometimes it’s a faded yellow sign, occasionally a rare blue sign, sometime an orange ribbon, or just a cairn. But overall, it’s not bad if you use your eyes and common sense. For those who have hiked La Cloche, I actually found that trail harder to navigate, even with its consistent blazes.
River crossings: The trail involved river crossings at White Gravel River and North Swallow River. White Gravel was knee deep at the shallowest point and a bit technical due to the convergence of the river flowing into oncoming waves. The water was frigid, but it’s a short crossing, so manageable. North Swallow is less than knee deep where runs into North Swallow Harbour and is not a big deal.
Campsites: Most of the campsite are located in harbours or waterfront, either along a beachy section or rocky coast. I didn’t stay at a single site with a bad view, but the infrastructure around the firepits is consistently dilapidated. Park staff informed me that, being a ‘wilderness park’, no maintenance is done to benches, etc. Park staff only manage the comically over-built outhouses and bear lockers. Again, all sites were fine, but the most noteworthy of the bunch I stayed at were WR1 at Willow River (a must if available), WGR1 at White Gravel River (keeping in mind that you’ll have to ford the river immediately out the gate if traveling south), and WSH1 at White Spruce Harbour (just a nice site with beach and rocky features).
Gear: Everything I brought got used with the exception of my insect repellant and head net. Baring any gear upgrades for further weight savings, I wouldn’t change any thing on my pack list.
While every campsite has a metal food locker, I reluctantly brought my bear canister (BV500) because some of the lockers are reportedly not rodent proof and I wanted to ensure my food was safe (bear hangs are not permitted in the park). I did try to purchase an Ursack, but Amazon cancelled my order, so I just went with the trusty BV500 despite the additional 2.5 lbs.
Food: My food weighed about 11 lbs and consisted of the usual hiker stuff. Most of my dinners were variations on Andrew Skurka recipes or ramen packs with added dehydrated veg and protein. I brought one store bought freeze dried just for fun.
